After all is said and done, including the ugly display against Rostov, the situation is a quarter final tie which brings the team very near to a high rewarding final.

With Jose we knew what was on the table meaning the means justify the end.
We also knew since a few years ago,at least most of us, that for United to be again right up there,it would require, unlimited funds, time, patience, commitment, and passion on par with what Sir Alex had achieved and more.

Jose,is moving in the right direction, albeit with more support than the previous gentlemen who were entrusted with the same extremely difficult task of replacing the man from Goven.

As such we remain a working progress entity and therefore making the result the most important factor in such situations. The scenario will change if Jose gets the right players to replace the current squad with all due respect to the gentlemen in question.

In the meantime we have to lump even if we don’t like the ‘winning ugly’ concept.

I can put up with Jose’s tactics to a point – I suppose when they bring results – but I cannot stand his performances in front of a camera.. I don’t want a manager who perpetually moans because that mood eventually permeates through the Club. I don’t like his treatment of certain players – all players should be treated with the same dignity.

The draw which pits us against Anderlecht brings back glorious memories of 1956 and the Busby Babes. I looked forward to the tie and to enjoy the wonderful flowing football which this embryonic team had started to play, with my all-time favourite footballer Duncan Edwards to the fore. The night before the game I was struck down with a severe chest infection and confined to bed. No TV coverage, no radio, no Facebook nor Twitter. I lay in bed all evening dreaming the game but when my father returned home and told me the score, I found it hard to believe : 10 – 0, 12 – 0 on aggregate. The best game I never saw!
In these days of austere football and poor finishing I long for nights like the one I missed.

Big K I could buy you whatever your tipple is all night and listen to your tales of yesteryear, keep them coming.

Anderlecht a good draw. Beatable, like everybody left in the competition including us, and short travelling time for Jose’s exhausted, intrepid warriors.

I’ve been chuckling along with mourinho until last night when I thought I detected a bit of desperation in his lunacy.

I agree with Thomas,[more so that he said he would sponsor the drinks], and we would be a right sight me with my bottle of jcoke,Tom with his tomato juices sitting around a nice fire or under the sun on my island listening to your tales about United.

I do not agree with you re Jose as every manager has his own style and even Sir could be accused of some of the things you credited Jose with like mis treating some players, which like you I do not condone.

Thomas – My point exactly was that it is the ‘means that justify the end ‘which is of the utmost importance to Jose at this point and time using his own ‘kind of magic’ with the resources he has at his disposal, which may border on the negative tactics and media exploitation he is so well adverse in.

What I like about the draw is playing the second leg at home. Yes Anderlecht will be dangerous and not to be taken lightly, but I can see us (at the very least) drawing the first leg. Then, there’s no excuse not to go through.

At least Jose can’t complain about the travel to Belgium so that’s a positive

Tielemans is supposed to be a great young player with massive potential. Will be very interesting to see him as he could be someone we should be looking at with the intention of buying.

Not normal for me to post midway to a game but had to .

It would take a brave man indeed to find any fault with what Carrick has done in the 1st half. His range of passing forward, have been excellent and his covering of the midfield and both channels commendable.

Could not find any fault with any player. Trust United duplicate more of the same in the second period.

Carrick’ splayed well no doubt, as have Pogba and Rashford.

Carrick and Rashford starred for me. Pogba wasted for 70 minutes – he duplicated what Carrick was doing and sometimes not as well. Zlatan was disappointing although he had some good touches. Defence was good until Rojo and Fellaini fell asleep and let in a very good equaliser. The passing generally was good but too many times backwards instead of forward. Anderlecht could be dangerous in the second leg but this was yet another game we should have won.

The opposite of the 1st period occurred in the second. As Carrick correctly called it United were stupidly sloppy.

The goal curse that has plagued United was again evident as the game should have been done and dusted long before it finished. At least 4 should have been the number in favour on the chances created and missed.
A 1-1 score is nothing bad but for the dominance by United it is a downright shame that the opposition equalised from their one and only strike at goal.

Trust that Jose has identified the man who can guarantee the goals for next season with or without big nose.

I thought Pogba had a decent game but then fluffed his lines when he got through on the keeper. Not sure you can coach out of him whatever goes through his mind when he gets one on one and sees the whites of the goalies eyes…not a lot you can do about getting the yips.

I think quite a few players had decent games last night…Carrick good, Valencia decent, Mhikyrkhyrkhyrtan quality, Rashford very bright…but we did fade in the second half and that equaliser was inevitable. Read a lot this morning saying we were in control but you never are fully in control at 1-0 and with our defence and midfield, an opposition goal is never far away. And I’m not sure how Mourinho can continue with Darmian at left back…I just don’t understand it?

Once again, I think we have a mentality problem when the pressure is on…this is a side in desperate need of some character as well as more speed, power, guile and strength.

Cant ever bring yourself to give Pogba any credit can you Big K? What did you think of Jesse?

jm1502 : Pogba will get plenty of credit when he displays any of the attributes of a multi-million pound player midfielder – reliable passing, good defending, goal threat and occasional scorer. I forgot to mention the anonymous performance of Jesse and also Martial when he came on.

You’re too hung up on the price tag mate, which was always going to be a millstone and no one’s worth that kind of money anyway. His passing, midfield defending, and overall work rate was excellent last night in my opinion. And, unlike Carrick, who I also thought played well, he did it in the opposition’s half rather than from the safety of his own half. You see, Pogba plays in areas where he’s actually challenged by the opposition. Carrick, on the other hand, has always played deep enough to avoid any risk. I mean, when was the last time you can actually remember Carrick having a shot? Even poor old Fellaini managed that last night.

    My team for tonight
    Romero
    Valencia, Bailly, Rojo, Blind
    Pogba, Herrera
    Lingard, Miki, Rashford
    Zlatan
i’d love to see Martial get a chance but his body language is letting him down, hopefully he gets his shit together and fights for his Place in the coming games

    #1466703

As long as we qualify, that’s all that matters. We need to be solid at the back because as long as we don’t concede we’re going through and we can catch them on the counter too. I would personally go for:

    Romero
    Valencia – Bailly – Rojo – Darmian
    Pogba – Herrera
    Lingard – Mhkitaryan – Martial
    Rashford

Can’t see us losing at home but could be a cagey affair tonight. I’m going for a 2-0 win. Hope we get an early goal and then pick them off as they press forward.

It’s going to be a chess match tonight. We don’t want to concede and they don’t want to be so open we score easily. Drab and boring is my prediction, squads aren’t overly going to matter as it’ll be 10 man defending from both teams
