Good post Palms and a pretty good read, certainly not boring.
January 4, 2018 at 8:46 pm #1578841AGREe palms we are about 3 top players short of really achieveing something with this team. But i feel the board just want to spend enough to get by hittin minimal targets (4th etc)
January 4, 2018 at 10:02 pm #1578857Spurs only drew with West Ham, so for now we have 5 points cushion with the 5th. Which is not bad TBH. It’s close. But if we invest correctly in January, IMO we should be able to finish in the top 4. And don’t rule out top 2 even. Our game is very good, we just lack finishing
January 5, 2018 at 8:20 am #1578919phwepsi – totally disagree with you on that one. If for nothing else apart from financial reasons I am convinced that Roman always wants to win the league and although top 4 is acceptable we do not ever aim for that
In terms of spending and getting buy I believe that so far the board has spent circa 300m for Conte to bolster the squad and even in this inflated market that is not peanuts…!! Whether or not these are players that Conte wanted or were part of his shopping list we will never know but he cannot say that the Club has not backed him financially and if rumours are to be believed they will do it again in January…? KTBFFH
January 5, 2018 at 9:05 am #1578944Is our net spend the least of all the top six clubs last couple of seasons, so the 300mill is a bit of bum steer.
That said I still do not get get how Man City PSG are able to spend the money they have is FFP is still actually valid, but Chelsea seem to be adhering to it.
Yes Liverpool have just spent 75mill on VVD but will off set by the Coutinho fee.
Conte is very clear on he has not had the players he wanted or wants.
He has openly discussed one player (Vidal) whom he was quite clear he would want him playing for him, ain’t gonna happen though.January 5, 2018 at 1:35 pm #1579139totally understand the frustrations of snatching a draw from the jaws of victory. As a liverpool fan, the 3-3 we got at the emirates has also left a very bad taste. Yesterday, it could be argued that the gunners deserved the point. Against liverpool, they were totally outplayed for 80 minutes and still managed to get 3 goals.
January 5, 2018 at 2:06 pm #1579161reds2riches: Welcome and good to see you on here buddie. Arsenal are good offensively and Liverpool are often frail defensively so that can happen.
Chelsea should have won that game convincingly long before thd Bellerin equaliser.
Always difficult to accept conceding a goal in the 92nd min for a draw especially when Chelsea squandered so many chances.Cheers 999
January 5, 2018 at 2:07 pm #1579163Is that what you came on here to tell us, you were unlucky and we weren’t
Ok, jog on now.January 5, 2018 at 2:16 pm #1579167CFC the key to whether the club have backed the manager as you say with 300m of signings is whetjer they are players he wanted. Judging by his demeanour and comments it would seem that is not necessarily 100% the case!
January 5, 2018 at 2:26 pm #15791701905, it’s certainly not austerity which makes me wonder where and when that quote came from.
As you rightly say the big unanswered question is whether the players signed were Conte’s requested players or not I think we all think we know the answer to that which is the big worry. Cheers 999
January 5, 2018 at 2:32 pm #1579174pylon, I don’t want to get into a big debate with you about this but I think we should welcome sensible opposition posters on to the site that aren’t trying to score points and upset the natives.
My experience of red2riches is that he is not an opposition poster trying to score silly points and take swipes at Chelsea and opposition posters of his sort can add to the site. Cheers 999
January 5, 2018 at 2:47 pm #1579181Well 9 first time I have seen him post on any Chelsea thread, so from that perspective why post it, totally irrelevant really,I wouldn’t see the need to go on their forum.
However if you know more of him from general football page then fair enough and we shall leave it there.January 5, 2018 at 2:49 pm #1579184Fair do’s pylon.
January 5, 2018 at 3:29 pm #1579200999 – agree – do not get the austerity comment at all
My take on this is that Conte gives the board (or whomever) probably 2 or 3 choices for a given position. Obviously he would state his favourite and probably gives the board a list of priorities
I have no idea if Chelsea really try to buy the first choice for every position or not but what is implied is that they do not. Therefore, I would be surprised if players bought were never ever on a Conte wish list but I would not be surprised that they are rarely his first choice…? KTBFFH
January 5, 2018 at 3:32 pm #1579201Whether or not the £300M the Board is said to have invested in support of their coach is gross or nett of sales is a moot point but if that kind of outlay is on the balance sheet it is, in my opinion, money wasted if it is on players not of the coach’s choice. And there is some evidence that this is the case. It may well be (as has been pointed out once again) that Abramovich aims always for titles (don’t we all?) but this becomes a trifle difficult if those trying to achieve the same end have somewhat better tools; a Mercedes saloon might be a fine car but a Ferrari would win the race! “phwepsi” was right, in my view, to say that we are aiming for a top four place now this season…..an examination of the present league table suggests this is the only rational conclusion.
Of course, like much else, everything resets to zero in August and, then, we can allow ourselves the hope and maybe even belief that we can join Mr Abramovich in targeting next season’s top spot. BUT to do that we MUST invest in our coach’s top picks just to give him a chance. Asking him, or any coach, to produce the results both he and the club desire and deny him the tools is unworthy and a waste of the money you pay him (why keep a dog and bark yourselves?) and the money spent on ‘replacement’ choices. Incidentally, in my last post I said that we are aiming for a top player in every spot: what I meant to say was that we need top COVER in every position. I think that is what Conte wants, too: like me he probably thinks he has a top player for every position…..the problem comes when you want a replacement for injuries, suspensions and rotation. That is why I support what I believe to be his aim in getting Sandro, Vidal and a striker….the three players suggested in my last post. Barkley? Despite his endorsement by Frank Lampard I feel that his purchase havers towards what happened last summer….with likely repeated consequences. undoubtedly a talented prospect at one time but what has happened to him in the intervening years? I would much rather favour using one or two of our championship winning youngsters…..but that is another issue for another thread.
January 5, 2018 at 3:44 pm #1579209Spot on Palms.
Contes body language today on when pressed on transfers was quite awkward reallyJanuary 5, 2018 at 4:43 pm #1579256Palmeab excellent post!!
January 5, 2018 at 4:45 pm #1579258Palms…The clubs net spend under the Italians watch is about £95m. That’s £47.5m per season. Not exactly splashing out is it. Can understand his frustration and comments if he’s been unable to land the players he desires.
