There’s really not much you can take from pre-season friendlies, especially the first game after the players come back, but some truly great performances yesterday from some of the kids, most of whom I’d never heard of and, with Wenger’s track record, we probably won’t hear of them again.

Martinez continues to impress. He wasn’t exactly facing a world-class forward line, but he was equal to everything that was thrown at him, looked comfortable and kept his concentration well against a side more interested in stopping us from scoring than testing our defence.

Lacazette scored. Nothing special but that’s what I liked about it – didn’t try to be clever, he just wanted to hit the back of the net and, to be fair, it could have been a cricket score but for some excellent goalkeeping. I think the commentator mentioned that the Sydney ‘keeper played for our academy a few years back, around the same time as Chez.

Kolasinac looks like he could do really well in the new formation. Likes to get forward, has a bit of pace to him and definitely not a player who’s going to be bullied.

The big disappointment, for me, was Theo….again! I was patient with him for a lot longer than most and there’s still (inexplicably, perhaps) a small part of me that still thinks he’s just going to explode one day and become the player I’m sure he could be, but he seems to be over the injuries and yet is failing to push on, or grab one of the limited opportunities he gets these days. Wenger still has a lot to answer for, but Theo is old enough and experienced enough now to take some of the responsibility himself.

    Agree Al,
Theo is still the same, I don’t think he is worth the effort. I would sell him off and try and keep Ox. Both have failed so far to ignite their respective careers, however Ox has age on his side and can play in new set up. Walcott I’m afraid, will not.
I liked the new faces. The right attacking player (Nelson?) looks good. However Maitland-Niles is, in my opinion not good enough. Silly giveaways and bad positional play. Have seen hIm a few times now, doesn’t do it for me.
Like keeper he will only get better with games, a “keeper”, excuse pun.
Already suffering withdrawal symptoms, can’t wait for new season and more transfers.
Sanchez to stay would make me happy, on my wish list. I can only hope!

Regards to Shifty, is he on holiday!!!!!!!

As you said it’s difficult to see in these games but Nelson looked great and only 17. Only played there a week in training has all the attributes pace great first touch and can cross the ball. Not sure on the left back Bramell ? But willock looked good. Maitland niles was Poor but he is holding midfielder and when he has played there he looks good. It looks like, We have a lot of players in the squad he can’t keep all of them happy.

Only saw about 30 mins of the Bayern game before I lost the stream and couldn’t get it back and, to be honest, I wasn’t that upset about it. For that first half hour, it was looking like they were going to rip us apart again. They were a lot closer to full strength than we were but even so, we looked awful.

So it was a very pleasant surprise when I checked the score at full time. I was fully expecting another ‘5-1-type’ scoreline to the Germans and saw we’d not only kept it down to one goal, but even managed to pull one back! And then we beat them on penalties!

I know, I know, it’s only a pre-season friendly and will mean nothing once the season starts, but you can’t do anything more than beat what’s in front of you, when it’s in front of you, so for now I’m just going to enjoy three wins in a row and hope we can make it four against the Chavs.

    C’MON YOU GUNNERS!!!

I watched the whole game and to say we were lucky is an understatement! Their goal was never a penalty but with Chech having a blinder and poor finishing we could have let in another five. We did have our chances as usual and did look dangerous up front but we got slaughtered in midfield again. It was a mix and match team but it is slightly worrying that has always been our strong point but we were totally outplayed and I don’t know what combination of papers we have would have worked. We scored last min and a good goal Ramsey had been his usual self great skill one min the give the ball away the next but then turns up and sets up the goal! Ps Holden should be on this tour we don’t have any centre halfs and he did not play any games for the under 21s you would have thought he would be there trying to secure his place !

Steve2bath – I agree but To be fair, our team that played for most of the game was almost unrecognisable. And it worries me when I say that.Only three players who could not play together due to their involvement in the confederations cup and u-21 euros.Sanchez, mustafi and bellerin. But apart from that we should have no excuse to put out the team we did out there, be it because of injuries or not.It might suggest how we still lack squad depth.

Saying that, this is what I thought of the performance. Not the worst, but still frustrating in terms of lack of desire shown.Aimsley maitland niles?I don’t think he’ll get another chance. His challenge on bernat was not even a foul, yet he gave the guilty look and almost cost us the game.If I was a youngster in his position I’d be livid the ref awarded a penalty for that.He had a poor game anyways.there were other moments, where the ref gave decisions against based solely on the reaction of our players? When will our players ever learn to know how to “win”.
Apart from that I have no particular player that got on my nerves. But a word on lacazette,Unimpressive.I don’t doubt he can be a fox in the box, but he needs to show the correct attitude the desire and most importantly work rate is pathetic.I mean we laugh at Ozil but lacazette made him look good.I guess sanchez might be the only one actually working the defenders should he stay. And also lacazette missed the only good chance we had, he’s got to take those if it was giroud we wouldn’t have heard the last of it.

Focusing on the positives, nelson looks a real talent.El nenny was also impressive although I never want to see him in that position again, he showed some real desire.Kolasinac got criticized today but apart from that one mistake where he seemed injured he still looks solid.Monreal is the one of the most underrated players ever.If you notice him closely he hardly puts a foot wrong. And lastly Iwobi, what a fantastic player and a match saver. He’s a talent and I really think we might not even have seen the half of it yet.

I have never read as much rubbish as i do from you TSO, not in my life.
The team had a bout of food poisoning, hence the weakened team. Thats a pretty good excuse. have you ever had a bad case of food poisoning.
Anyone taking any serious feedback from these friendlies should have mug written on their foreheads. We are, what, 3 games into the pre season. Its all about fitness and promotion at the moment. More promotion than anyting else. the main players are no where near playing at their capable levels.
TSO, if giroud missed a 1 on 1 in a friendly i wouldnt give two shits, like 99% of people. ITS A FRIENDLY. Your lovin with giroud and your hate for lacazette are comical to say the least. We could of signed Lewandovski and you’d still say negative things about him and declare your hard on even more for Giroud.
The only thing we can take from these games is the development of our younger players, good to see what they can give and maybe seeing the new players get a run around. Its all about promotion on the world stage and getting fitness.

As every one is saying these games are for fitness but a good preseason will help with a good start. We can’t slate forwards for missing chances as they all do and I didn’t see the lack of work rate but he would have to go some to be compared to Ozil let’s give him and the team a proper chance. What I expect is that with his play and movement he makes and gets chances. As I said our Midfield has everyone fit but I am still not sure it’s good enough or even which combination is the best?

stev2bath1 – You’re probably right I shouldn’t slate lacazette already but you get a glimpse of what the player is about or what he would be for us.Saying that I expect a lot more from him once the season is underway.

TheHulk – At this point I’m only going to say that you’re one weird character in your thinking.I mean really, our thinking couldn’t be more apart.I wouldn’t bother going and checking on my previous threads, but as far as striker’s go I questioned Lucas perez’s signing(against the judgment of almost everyone on here) and in the end I was proved right as he will now be sold for a loss.I also said sanchez wouldn’t succeed to play as a central striker alone and wenger ultimately changed his position towards the end of the season after realizing how much he mucked up.Now I say lacazette is not the correct signing for us, simply because he’s not the one to take us to the “next level” and we’ve spent a lot of money on him.The problem with you and people like you is that this club signs a good player from a not so good league and you wet your pants.I’m sure when he’s going to bang in some goals your going to wet your pants to.But see that’s your problem, that’s your way of thinking.

I think much bigger than you guys, is he the one who’s vastly going to improve us?No.Is he going to make us win the PL?No.Is he going to make us win any cup?I’d be hugely surprised. In summary, he’s not going to take us to the next level and we’ve spent a shitload on him.Get that through your head.Oh yeah, and in terms of credibility I know where I stand and where you do.

All hail TSO, the big picture thinker. hahaha, seriously fella wind it in. You have this very high opinion of your thoughts and believe what you say is greater than the majority. Dare anyone slate your beloved Giroud.
I dont remember anyone on here applauding the signing of Lucas, i think atleast 99% of fans would agree he was a pointless signing. you dont have some divine foresight.
The french league is poor in yours and a lot of other peoples opinions, and i agree to extent. You see most people take that stance from a europa league/CL perspective as thats really the only time most watch foreign teams especially from ‘lesser’ leagues. The french league is physical, very physical more so than any other league other than our very own. No we base a league most of the time on the CL and europa league performances. Both Monaco and PSG went further than all english clubs. Lyon got to Semi of the europa league playing some great exciting football. Only UTD bettered that and got to final. yes the top teams in the french league are better but is that not the case in every league? pull your head out ya ass and watch a few games next season.
I see Lacazette overall as a good signing based on strong facts. He is consistant, in a demanding physical league in a much poorer team than others. Now if he scores bag fulls of goals of course im gonna cream my pants, i did when smith, wright and henry were all scoring for us. Is that not normal? i wet myself whenever bergkamp got on the ball on final 3rd of pitch. No one thought Henry was any good, people slated the signing of bergkamp so people like you will always be blind and ignorant. Lacazette has a lot to prove but he is no matter what way you look at it a level up from what we currently have. Im sorry TSO he is much better than Giroud. I love Giroud but he is and always will be an option b player, he has proven he cannot start consistently for us.
I have a serious problem with loving players that do well, thanks for making me realise that.
i Agree he wont lead us to glory but thats not because of him that is all down to wenger.
You think we’ve spent a shitload on him but given todays market its an average price for a player who always scored goals! 45mil rising to 52mil when we spent 37 on xhaka and msuatfi should, i hope put what a good deal that is in to perspective.
I have been posting for years on here and i can honestly say you have less of clue than any other poster thats ever come on here. Your ‘i told you so’ attitude is that of a spoilt child. always first to come out and say ‘see look i was right and i knew before everyone’ (you’ve done this in your last comment)
i would say dont bother responding because whatever you type will just be more nonsense with no factual base or any credence but i know you will because you cant resist but have the last word or bite.

TheHulk – I honestly stopped reading a single word after you claimed that 99% of the people on here though lucas perez was a pointless signing.Much to the contrary it was.I’ll give you suggestion though,Why don’t you go back to my thread of questioning the perez signing exactly a year ago.Go on son, read all the comments. If I remember correctly I was the only one unhappy, many people actually liked the fact we signed him and told me to give him a chance!Just like they are telling me now to give lacazette a chance. And look how that turned out.Maybe do some proper research before mouthing nonsense and making statements like that.

    Deja vu.

We need a centre back NOW. Nothing has changed from last season. We all know Mert was, and is never the answer. Kos looks lost. Please pay the money and get Van Dyk.
No one showed today against Chelsea, who were not all that good, just we were so bad. Pre-season or not. We didn’t have a clue. Monreal was about best.
M/Nils…… rubbish. My previous comment here rings true. Not I told you so, but really.
Hole reappearing again for third goal.

I know preseason, trying combinations, players not back. I’ve heard it before, same as you. Trouble is We’ve seen it before. Come on Arsenal, at least fix the back line. I haven’t seen much of the new striker, was he on the field today.

That was our fourth pre-season game and Chelski’s first. I’m not sure whether that works in Cheslki’s favour or ours – should we have been sharper, having played more games? Or did Chelski have the advantage, being fresher, especially in that heat?

Either way, I expect a much better showing in the Community Shield.
