Tonight tells us everything we already know about Sturrudge. Huge talent but made of paper maché

Excellent Controlled performance, Plenty of positives but let’s not forget it is only a pre=season workout albeit against a good Bayern side, The real test starts in a couple of weeks at Watford but let’s look at the positives from this pre season so far.

Agreed. We looked a lot fitter than Bayern, so that’s good. It’s good to see Salah fitting into the team though, this will really help him get off to the best start possible when the league begins.

I hope Sturridge is ok but is anyone surprised? He looked really quick at times tonight too, shame.

If, and I do mean if, Moreno can play like that every time he’s selected there’s no reason to sell him, we all know he can’t defend to save his life but going forward…………. a wholly different kettle of fish, one swallow and all that, but in an attacking role the lad has distinct possibilities, in Klopp I trust. YNWA RIP the 96

Nice to give Bayern a good thrashing in their own backyard.

Yes Scouser, the key to Moreno is to play him against teams/players who won’t put him under extended defensive pressure. he was excellent today, MOTM for me , though I kept losing my stream.

I know pre-season can’t be counted for much but that was a very capable Bayern line-up today and we made them look pathetic if I’m totally honest. If we needed 6 I’d say we would have gotten it.

I hadn’t watched any pre-season until tonight (besides goals) but I was really impressed with Salah and how he’s fitting in. I think sometimes his eye for a ball needs work, or something I cant quite put my finger on but on the other hand, he really is a live-wire and he’s not all speed. His positioning for his goal was like a poacher. I can’t wait til we play in the league now, even if I’m still not satisfied with our transfer business on the whole.

If you needed to describe Sturridge in ten seconds, just show somebody the clip of him beating the offside, leaving defenders with pace and then exquisite chip over the goal keeper and then pulling up with a leg injury which prevents him from celebrating his goal. Hope he gets better, on his day he is up there with the best.

Mak, In the bag? tbh I can’t see past City. Moreno was outstanding last night in forward mode available for £15m he looked like a £50m plus wing back last night. Feel for Sturridge injuries have followed him all his career

It’s only pre-season, but some important observations from last night:

    1. Moreno and Robertson will fight to be our first-choice left back, The competition will hopefully bring out the best in both of them, and if any of them slips up defensively, they will be dropped.

    2. Sturridge definitely has a big part to play at Liverpool. The fact that we have 3 other strikers means that Liverpool can cope without him when he is injured. But when he is fit he can put in big performances to help us deliver the results e.g. like at West Ham last season, or as a super sub coming off the bench. In fact the less Sturridge plays, the less likely he is to be injured and more likely to have a bigger impact with crucial goals and assists – he is now a squad player, not a regular starter, and I am sure he has no problem with that.

All we need now is to somehow sign Van Dijk, and that will make us ready for the Premiership – of course, other surprise signings might also materialise

Think Klopp wanted to take a good look at Sturridge over a season to see how many games he plays / is available for.

Really end of season will dictate his future. People have questioned his quality recently but that isn’t the problem, his injury record is and his availability for games (whilst being match fit) isn’t good enough. If this doesn’t improve in terms of availability then I wouldn’t be surprised if he was given a free transfer or sold for a low fee.

I personally believe he will play more games this season and has looked sharp (some might say that isnt hard considering last seasons injury record) however it’s really up to him / whether his body holds up.

Gotta feel sorry for him as it’s clear he just wants to play football.

So Moreno has a good game in a pre season friendly and people forget about the last 3 seasons he’s spent with us and declare him ready to fight it out for first choice left back?

The guy will be offloaded before the window closes.

Bayern were awful, given their “big names” they couldn’t get anything going. Based on last night (yes friendly I know) but why would anyone want Sanches. Admittedly i have never really seen much of him before but he looked like Salif Diao, his only contribution was grabbbing hold of Firmino’s coat tails

Sturridge was interviewed and said its only fatigue so hopefully he’s ok.

Moreno is going. Milner will be first choice left bsck if fit.

It’s only pre-season and I will always fancy U.S. againest teams that come at us. It’s the teams that are afraid to attack that could be the issue.

A front four of Couthino, Salah, mane and firminio is as good as any in the pl. I’m concerned we will have a lot of games and need a centre bsck Without a doubt.

It’s all about cementing a place in the top 4 and winning a trophy for me. I can’t see us challenging for the league as Chelsea, Utd and city all have much more depth. Great to watch good attacking football and we will attack everyone.I’m optimistic for this season but Watford away is a horrible first game. Silva knew how to set hull up againest U.S. Last season and Watford will have 11 men behind the ball. A scrappy 1-0 win like last season be great

    hey hey..

With all do respect I think some of you are way to harsh on Moreno. I think Klopp rates Moreno and unless a really good offer comes i doubt we will sell him. I myself hope we do not we all know about his defensive shortcomings but from what i noticed he Is not giving up and like someone mentioned i Think he will be fighting it out with Robberts. I hope Moreno makes alot of you eat humble pie come the end of the season!
As for the game, preseason or not I am loving what i see. Everthying is moving the right direction and the team seems happy and I think we will be scaring alot of teams with our speed and high pressure.

I’m sorry I think people forget how brainless Moreno is. He just can’t defend. He really can’t and one good game doesn’t change that. He’s 3rd choice left back
And if a good offer comes in then he will be gone

Perhaps a full season on the bench made himaware of his responsibilities. We can hope that he will improve and players often do with age. Talent has never been the issue with him, just the mental aspect of the game.

It’s much too simplistic to say that “Moreno can’t defend” as he’e got all of the attributes to make him a very good defender as he’s got as much pace and commitment as anyone around. The issue with him is that he hasn’t got the balance right as to when to dive in and when to “stand up” i.e. anything which is 50:50 or even 40:60 against and he will think that he’s going to win it. What this means is that he will be winning some encounters that other full backs wouldn’t win, but will also inevitably lose more encounters – and due to his position on the pitch, these are more noticeable than someone who stands off but still allows a cross to come in – but hasn’t got rinsed. In summary, he’s guilty of gambling a bit too much.

So, whether you conclude that he is too “hard-wired” to change his game or whether he’s still young enough to be coached into having a better awareness of where the rest of the defence are operating around him and hence improve his decision making. After these pre-season games, I’m beginning to believe that Klopp wants to keep him as he’s got something that you can’t coach = pace. I don’t think he would have played last night (and the minutes he’s been involved in other pre-season games) if he wasn’t in Klopp’s plans – but I could be wrong. Clearly Robertson will play tonight though as there’s only a 24 hour break in between games.

The season could well see Moreno and Robertson competing for the LB berth and Milner as the utility bench player who could come on to help close out games in a variety of positions.

The other good aspect about Moreno is that he appears to be a really good presence around the team. His attitude was fantastic last season considering that he spent so much of it sitting on the bench and he’s so obviously best mates with Firmino and, quite importantly at the moment, Coutinho.

Ginger, I would definitely keep Moreno as backup to Robertson. We are in 4 competitions so it is a no-brainer that we need 2 left-backs to cope in all of them.

Even though I have called for Moreno to be sold in the past, I will always support a player who can turn his career around. With increased competition from Robertson, Moreno has no option but to raise his game, especially defensively, and I think he will, as long as he is willing to learn from Klopp.

And it is the ideal situation for Liverpool to have two good left-backs – start Moreno in FA Cup and League Cup, and start Robertson in Premiership and CL.

Red Herring – totally agree with you on Moreno. He is a solid professional and I believe he can improve on his defending. I have a feeling that the competition from Robertson will bring out the best in him

We are actively trying to sell Moreno.
He is currently up for sale.
Despite Milner having to play every league game at left back without a break Klopp still didn’t see fit to start him.
    The lad can’t defend.
I’ve no malice against him, he try’s his best but he cannot defend.
He’s a failed winger who’s been moved to full back and isn’t very good at it.
He’s very fast with a decent shot but he’s nowhere near LFC standard for a fullback.
I’ll be extremely surprised if hes still at Anfield come Sept 1st.
