“what’s the difference between diving and “taking one for the team” – Nothing they’re both cheating.”

I disagree, cynical fouling is part of the game. You get punished for it by the ref. Diving is cheating to con the ref and the opponent gets punished. That’s cheating. Getting something you don’t deserve.

Yes 999, I know Suarez loves a dive but Barcelona were experts at the dark arts long before Susrez joined.

Johnny, if you’re happy that deliberately stopping your opponents creating an opportunity by a premeditated cynical foul is acceptable is ok, but a premeditated cynical action to create an opportunity is not, that’s fine.
For me, any cynical breaking of the laws of the game, which in effect is what they both are should receive the same punishment….Pagan

Pagan, I agree they both should get the same punishment, I just think one is cheating, the other isn’t.

Johnny, I thought Don Revie’s Leeds United were the originators of “the dark arts”. 🙂

Johnny, the interesting point you raised is that cynical fouling is part of the game, well yes it is now beacause its been allowed to become acceptable.
However they did bring in the “profession foul” to try and combat it, but this only relates to cynical challenges related to goal scoring opportunities,
What in my opinion we need to do is to make sure that diving never becomes part of the game, which unfortunately does seem to be the way we’re going as the risk/reward far outweighs the punishment…..Pagan

Barca is an obsolute disgrace to modern football!
How can we forget the theatricals of David Villa and Sergio Busquets?
For each decision against them, they surround the referee!
You touch the boots of Neymar and Suarez and they fall immediately! This only means that they are deliberately looking for penalities!!

All teams have players that put pressure on referees. What Barcelona did was a special moment in football that we may never see again. Everyone said if any team could do it it was them. But for them to actually do it the way they did was incredible. After PSG scored people all thought PSG were through. I thought it was the best game I’ve ever seen.

What Deportivo did v Milan was better. Was pure football, no diving and cheating required.

Ronaldo? Ashley Young and Wayne Rooney?

All teams have players that dive Suarez got away with one v PSG the same way as other players at other clubs have got away with it previously and will do so again in the future until something is put in place to try and eliminate it.

The only way to sort diving out is by having review panels that review the television footage and hand out 3 match bans if players are deemed guilty of doing it.

I would love to see the last Barca goal from a level view, the way the linesman would have seen it,but I cant find it anywhere, perhaps someone has a link?
Anyway, surely Barca have done us all a favour, as this game alone must greatly increase the pressure for the introduction of a video referee.
It’s difficult to imagine that all the second half Barca goals would have survived the scrutiny of a video ref.Indeed, if a video ref had been in place i seriously doubt that at least one of the penalties would have been awarded.
Barca dont deserve their place in the next round, it would be nice to think that justice would be done, but seriously it’s hard to imagine that a referee will be in charge who is strong enough to officiate fairly.
The case for a video panel grows with every twist of this story.
