I think Benteke has had some criticism and rightly so based on some games, however people should take into account, some of the approach play coutinho aside has been very average in some games.

I know Benteke will limit our free flowing football on occasion but he is a consistent finisher in the EPL.

It’s a shame Sturridge isn’t / can’t stay fit as I actually would like us to play both with them interchanging. Of course this will not work in every game and you probably wouldn’t take this type of attacking approach from the start against the top 6 or 7, but the other games I don’t see why not … especially without consistent goal scorers further back yet (it appears to be working for Watford).

I would like to see Benteke start today with Origi offering closer support, both have pace and power and could easily play off each other in Sturridge’s absence. Looking forward to the game.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see Lalana, Firmino & Coutinho in a front 3 for the Watford game.

There are reports suggesting Chelsea is looking at Benteke to solve their scoring problem. Do you think Klopp should sell him in January if this rumour is true?

If he features this afternoon, then hopefully, he can get back on track in scoring goals.

I wouldn’t sell him yet gabara, we need to see him over at least 1 full season if not 2.

I like firmino but don’t see that as his natural position and don’t think he is clinical enough nor is lallana.

I we are only going to play one up top and its not Benteke, it should be origi for me.

The rumours of Benteke to Chelsea continue to grow?

I’m not sure he’s a Klopp player and with limited funds Klopp might be tempted to cash in with the likely limited transfer funding from the owners. We shall see.

Far too early to even be thinking about selling Benteke nevermind selling him to someone like Chelsea.

@gabara: It depends on what the offer would be. If they were to offer what we paid, £30 million, then yes. We need better players and Klopp should be given the opportunity to buy his own. Benteke won’t be a success at Liverpool in my opinion.

Bofa, too premature to right him off already and if we do sell him in Jan, who would we buy realistically …

Sturridge is still not fit, origi looks good but a little raw and firmino is not the answer up top. Ings is injured.

If we get the right players in Jan, fair enough but I am not convinced we will be able to and don’t want squad players. Quality over quantity.

Considering how the transfer policy has been in the past it wouldn´t surprise me to see Benteke sold if Chelsea would submit a bid.

Hopefully the board has turned the page though, Benteke is a target man, a target man rarely scores that many goals. Most of the time they linger around the 10 goal margin, so yeah Benteke might cost the penny but he is delivering like his usual self.

I rate him but only as a 2nd or 3rd striker, we need a fit Sturridge or a new striker to lead the line. We are not going to be challenging until that happens.

Origi is too raw, he got potential but he needs to find his level and be consistent and its much too much to ask him to lead the line.
Ings is out until next season and he will need a few months then to get match fit, which is a crying shame because his guts and determination is what we need at the moment.
Balotelli is a option but he can only work as a 2nd or 3rd striker, he will never be the first option for any team until he faces responsibility.

ps. WTF? is Markovic doing out on loan? I would love to see him in the team right now, as a attacking midfielder. There is no creativity here.

Bingo, yes depends on which way you look at it, I personally think there are better strikers out there and who suit our style of football better, however at the time with Rodgers, our form etc. I don’t think we would have got a recognised striker and you could question our transfer policy but the reliatively ‘unknown’ players bought in by other teams who are having wonder seasons – well they could possibly come to us and wilted under the pressure (not consistently playing and scoring in the EPL).

Benteke’s stats in the EPL are fairly good (apart from this season when he hasn’t really set the world on fire).

    2015/2016 – 14, 4
    2014/2015 – 29, 13
    2013/2014 – 26, 10
    2012/2013 – 34, 19

I like Ings and probably his style is better suited to us but his stats aren’t any better 35 EPL games with 11 goals and he isn’t a target man ….

Players like Sturridge come round once in a while and if he isn’t fit, then I would like to see Benteke and Origi in advanced positions (in the absence of Sturridge and Ings). What I don’t want to see is the likes of Lallana given chance after chance because he has good movement. We need to score more goals, that is blatatently clear so with the players we have missing, giving Benteke that run would be the right call.

That being said, if Klopp has an ace up his sleeve and an get a top striker who more suits are game then so be it, maybe Benteke will be sacrificed come end of season.

NotoriousBIngo, you say a target man rarely scores many goals, really? Not what I can see based on his stats.

Benteke had a very good ratio of 1 in 2 (49 in 100 games) for Villa, that is an average of 16 goals per season, and even then he was out for quite some time with a long term injury. In fact in his first season he scored 23 goals, that is definitely prolific whichever way you look at it.

If he can get going at Liverpool and start playing regularly, I can see him doing the same for us.

But the problem is Klopp seemingly does not think he can fit into his style of play, but I personally would start with him in virtually every game

Benteke might be more suited to teams like Villa where they depend a lot on counter attack and crosses by the wingers to him as a target man. But when faced with teams parking the bus, he doesn’t have the speed, the movements and the dribbling skill like Suarez to breach the defence. The crosses by Moreno and Clyne have been quite terrible. If we want to play to Benteke’s strength, we will need wingers who can cross the ball well and a striker near Benteke to pick up his second ball.

gabara why do you assume that Benteke scores most of his goals from crosses?

He scores tons of goals with his feet, do you not remember when he ran through the Liverpool defence to score from the halfway line 2 seasons ago?

Songman, that was during a counter attack where our defence were stretched. The pass to Benteke was as good as his strike and he took it first time.

He is a consistent goal scorer crosses or not, in the absence of Sturridge and Ings and us not having a plan b in Jan, we should play him. I would also play Origi to partner him.

We can get the players Klopp wants and then play his preferred formation / system. He scores goals and at the moment that is one of our weaknesses.

I don’t pretend to know all the answers but with the players we currently have at our disposal and taking in their strengths and weaknesses it seems that 4-2-3-1 would be best suited.
We have that single target man who can score goals given the ammo but can also bring other players into the game and we have number of players who can play behind/off him. However these 3 players need to work in tandem with the striker and not leave him isolated. That seems to be a constant problem for the last 18 months.
If we were to adapt this formation we can’t just play it for 1 game and then abandon it if it doesn’t work perfectly. It’s has to be worked at with the creases ironed out.

I understand others are suggesting playing 2 up top, Benteke and Origi maybe, but where does that leave Ibe, Coutinho, Firmino, Lallana etc??
In a diamond only 1 of them could play, in 4-4-2 we have no actual winger bar Ibe.
I’m not saying I’m defo right but with the players we have at our disposal it’s seems on face value that 4-2-3-1 is the way to go.

gabara ask the Villa fans, Benteke can score a whole variety of goals, not just from crosses as you incorrectly assume.

I would definitely start Benteke in most games from now on, the more he plays the more confident he will get, and hopefully the goals will start flowing

His first season was good but then he got found out as you just need to cut out his service, after that he has struggled. Then his goals came when he hit form for two or three months. He is not prolific and we do not have the team to keep him busy in the box.

So 1 goal in 2 games over 3 seasons and 100 games (and with a major injury) is not prolific for a stiker?

Can you explain what scoring rate is considered prolific for a striker then?
