anyone who believes Conte would field a team so he could lose is obviously insane-however I do believe he should not start with the same formation game after game -it should be varied as teams can and do find a way around the same systems.
August 14, 2017 at 8:55 am #1516641also as for individual players I cant believe how players still go in with studs up knowing an unreasonable ref as we had on Saturday will show little mercy, it was an okay thing to do in the past but no longer it seems even though the rules are the same
August 14, 2017 at 10:47 am #1516704The official set the precedent by booking Alonso so early in the game that he game himself few options when it came to the Cahill decsion. Cahill himself did no favours going in the way he did so really the official was correct (and Cahill did not complain at all). However, that does not give any logic as to why as a team we just folded for the rest of the half and conceded 3 goals…?
Much better second half and a bit unlucky not to have got the draw
Michy was a waste of space and could not hold the ball up which is what we needed when down to 10 and so the ball just kept coming back. Moratta looked a much better player both on and off the ball so I fully expect him to start against Spurs. Thought Christensen and Rudiger looked OK under the circumstances but obviously need game time to improve their understanding of each others play and roles. Did not think that Dave looked comfortable in the WB role at all but maybe that was just down to how the game panned out..?
Apart from the Michy/Moratta decision which could have gone either way I cannot see any other options for a strong starting 11 were open to Conte so nonsense to claim he threw the game delibberately
We need to regroup and focus on the next few weeks as the games are coming thick and fast and unless we improve (and keep 11 players on the pitch) we could find our ourselves adrift and playing catch up so early in the season. KTBFFH
August 14, 2017 at 1:06 pm #1516775Here’s my summary of the game:
We started off quite slow.
Cahill deserved to get sent off.
Fabregas was stupid to applaud given his experience.
We should have gone to a back 4 and played 4-4-1.
Michy was woeful at holding up the ball and should have been taken off at half time.
Fabregas was stupid (again) at his decision to go in for such a challenge.
Morata showed fight when up front, his movement to offer himself for a pass was something that Michy needs to take notes on.
We lost but there were a few positives, mainly being Morata. We need a proper goal scorer to stand a chance of winning the league and i think he will get between 18-25 goals this season in the league. It’s only the first game, if we can come back with at least a point v Spurs that would be a good confidence booster for the team. A win would make up for this loss.August 14, 2017 at 2:04 pm #1516812AMZ – I thought Moratta did very well considering the circumstances why he came on and just from that small cameo I could see him getting 20+ goals for us
I thought that Alonso played well and was arguably the man of the match which is whyt I cannot understand why we chased sandro when (IMO) it is clear we need to be looking at the RWB role (although cover is required for alonso)
I also thought both Rudiger and Christensen did well, again, bearing in the circumstances
As you say, obviously not the start we wanted but in view of how the game developed still a few positives to take from the game. KTBFFH
August 14, 2017 at 2:21 pm #1516821Bluesy: who predicted a lost against Burnley? At least I predicted a draw.
CFC1905: me neither, why did we spend so much energy for Sandro. Obviously Juve don’t want to lose him and had rejected some exorbitant offers from us. For me Azpi can cover either RWB or LWB though not ideally but he can provide a cover. So a new RWB or LWB, any side, would be welcome for us. We talked about Ox, I don’t think that’s gonna happen. He starts with Arsenal, with World Cup to come, he won’t come to us to be on the bench here.
Morata/Michy: I think Morata did not start as Conte thought he was not ready. Which is a valid argument, considering he joined us late. I think from now on, it’s clear who should start. But again, for me: the squad is weakened. The team was not ready for the first game (no cover for DM, our main striker was not ready): what kind of pre-season we’ve just had? So much mess up IMO. Hence I predict that we won’t win anything this year. With no good pre-season, it would be difficult to win. The season has already started and we seem to miss the train.
August 14, 2017 at 3:05 pm #1516848Funnily enough aindro… The club has done exactly what it did under Jose. Short pre-season heading into a World Cup year. I think its safe to say the side looked under cooked and under prepared for both the Charity shield and opener.
Again, that remit falls under the coach. But, it appears their is a system in place for managing the players decided by medical advice and probably put there by insurers.
August 14, 2017 at 3:19 pm #1516853I actually agree with you for a change. I always felt the charity shield came way to early for us. We never looked ready. We havent looked any good since burnley second half. wouldnt say its all contes fault. Michy over morata is a mistake hell never make again also Injuries have killed us. especially buying a injured bakayoko and selling matic.
I dont think we have enough to beat spurs at all though. Unless we have a experienced centre mid we have a chanceAugust 14, 2017 at 3:23 pm #1516854I thought we put in a hell of a performance in the second half with 10 men and then 9 men.
The game swung on the red card for Cahill stupid of him to give the Ref a decision to make like that, personally I thought Cesc’s second yellow was a tad harsh but you can’t go in like that when you’re sitting on a yellow.
Good to hear the support Antonio got from the home fans. Proper Chels!
We’ve got a testing few weeks ahead and things might get worse before they get better but we’ll be fine when we’ve got our players back and one or two in.
Morata looked very good and I can’t wait to see him playing with Hazard and Pedro either side of him that front 3 will frighten a lot of teams this season. Forza Chelsea, Forza Conte.
August 14, 2017 at 3:45 pm #1516873I agree with this, I personally thought Cahill’s red was harsh:
Garth Crooks —
“Ward took his goal brilliantly on Saturday, in what was anything but a spiteful game; nevertheless seven players were booked and two sent off.
What this game signified to me was that players such as Newton (as good as he was) could not play in the modern era because of the inflexibility of referees such as Craig Pawson, who seem incapable of recognising a mistimed tackle as opposed to a dangerous one. Frankly, I’ve seen better decisions made by a Grade 4 referee on a Sunday afternoon.
Pawson couldn’t possibly have played the game at any serious level, having made the decision to send off Chelsea captain Gary Cahill for what was no more than a clumsy challenge. A yellow card was all that was required.
While Pawson may be popular with his peers for appearing brave, his hubris has put Stephen Ward and all defenders at risk of an early bath because of nothing more than their impetuousness.
Is that the future?”
