Good news if this has all been cleared up even if only until the Summer.

How far it goes after that is open to conjecture Conte spoke previously about killing players not committed to the cause and with only 2 years left on his contract come the summer if Costa hasn’t commited himself long term to Chelsea by then he could be sold by then anyway and we know given what he has said only recently that he harbours a desire of a return to Spain. Time will tell.

Buts let’s count our blessings it looks like we’ve got Costa until the end of the season and he’s returned to training and hopefully he’ll be in the side v Hull and providing we get the Costa of the first half of the season it hopefully keeps our title challenge on track and it’s one in the eye for the opposition fans some of whom were salivating at the thought of Costa being injured and or going to China destabilising our title bid.

RDP ‘…happened far too many times in too short a space of time for my patience..’

Clearly you’re not very patient then are you chap?

He has been here 3 seasons. I make it once (beyond reasonable doubt) in 3 seasons.

The first his goals were a major factor in us winning the league. The 2nd season was ridiculous by our modern standards and there was ‘palpable discord’ in the dressing room, he wanted to go. Once. The third it looks like his goals may well win it for us again. It has happened 1 in 3 seasons after a terrible season.

Also in 2016 no player was involved in more goals than Diego Costa.

and you want to….. just get rid like that? Unbelievable Jeff

So are the headlines Super Frankie. Unplayable on his day on the pitch mate, but is there point into hanging onto a player who keeps hinting at wanting out? Ultimately best for both parties.

In my mind is his Champions league record. I’d cash in and buy a striker who will lead the line for us next season in the champions league. Costa Imo hasn’t produced in both seasons we were in the comp with him up top.

and yes, patience wears thin when the club just announce a new stadium and your talisman says no thanks…

Agents are employed to work on behalf of their players and get the best deals for them so if the Chinese offer was for real (and they also must have been aware of the pending rule change as well..?) then it is only correct to have advised Diego. 30m a year is enough to tempt any player regardless of how loyal they think they are and so of course Costa would be confused

Not clear about the content or the magnitude of the so called training ground bust up but at least Conte stuck to his principles and clearly showed the player/squad who is the boss and his rules will apply regardless of how profile or valuable a player you are to the team (strong message sent out for me)

After a bit of love and kisses all seems to be resolved (in the short term at least) so again, and I stated this previously, rather blown out of proportion by the press

It will be interesting to see if Costa wants to leave at the end of the season if we actually win the league or not. Yes, it appears that he, or his family, hanker for Spain but at the same time he also appears to be more than happy this season playing his football in the EPL

I am sure that we would look to extend his contract and then at the end of the day the choice is down to Costa himself as far as I can tell…? KTBFFH

my view is that Costa has to stay for the remainder of the season and that seems very likely and then he can go as its no use keeping a player that is always unsure as to what club or country he wants to play at so already his loyalty is in question, remember his reaction when Mourinho had him on the bench for one game only, so for Costa despite his great value its always about himself first, many great players have left Chelsea but this has not stopped the club winning titles. There is always someone else that comes along or even may already be there.

Costa is not the only one linked every time with exit. We have also ex Atletico player Courtois. I think it’s a good thing if he stays until summer. Hopefully things will improve in 6 months and I hope that both will stay for the remainder of their contract.

I think we all have to accept that while we are a successful Club with above average players then the likes of Barca or Real will always be linked with our players by the press

Remember, this is their job to sell papers and that is why we are always linked with all and sundry as well as virtually every player is going to leave with every transfer window. The press logic seems to be the more you write then the better the chances of actually getting something right…!!

Currently we have a very strong squad which looks capable of winning the league. For me, Costa is the only unsettled player (apparently) but I do believe with some players coming back, some other will move on. That is only natural

I do not expect many changes this month and I honestly do not see more than 2/3 changes in the Summer either. You do need to freshen the squad but at the same time you do not need to make wholesale changes. This is why I think Conte has recalled a number of loan players as they now have the second half of the season to train with the squad under Conte’s direction for both the players and Conte to see who can adapt to what for most, is a new formation/style

My feeling is that at least a couple will get games this season and the same number will be included in the squad next year. KTBBFH

Courtois and Costa are vulnerable to a move to Spain especially if Conte doesn’t think they are 100% committed to the club because that goes completely against his management philosophy and if he thinks that’s the case he may well move both players on himself.

I have seen nothing but commitment from both Courtois and Costa When they have played for Chelsea this season.

I think Courtois will be around Chelsea for a while especially considering so many Belgian teammates live in London and the UK also if Costa goes and we get Lukaku back mean more more Belgians in the squad.

Sky sports reporting that Costa wants to extend his contract providing we double his money to £300k a week!!!
So next time your sitting there watching a prem game you and everyone else in the ground is in effect giving him £20….Pagan

    Pagan – Instead of thinking season ticket holders pay £20 towards that 300@k p/wk, consider this;

The new huge broadcasting deal for the prem is how we pay Hazard 200k plus and Costa whatever it is and whatever it may be shortly. Match day revenue is an ever decreasing part of Chelseas total revenue vs commercial and broadcasting and still will be even with a 60k capacity stadium.

Asia funds about 60% of that new prem deal.. so personally I take solace from the concept it’s more like Tianjin & co’s supporters are already paying him £20 a game whilst he plays for us 🙂

With the way football is going, it’s only a matter of time until we start paying 300k p/wk, along with the rest of the top

Super Frankie, or you could say if the Asian market focuses inwards as they buy in the best talent, Europe loses 60% of its revenue, and the sponsors will follow.

Just think, we could get rid of Terry, Hazard and Costa, yes we may become a team that only challenges for top 6, but we could all get in free.

It staggers me how reliant the whole game is on TV/broadband providers, who lets face it could get their heads together and offer far less than they do now…..Pagan

As Super Frankie suggests based on the current direction of wages primarily funded by the enormous TV deals of which Sky/BT are by far the biggest contributors and of the Asian countries Thailand currently pays the most for PL football with China lieing in 8th place in a table of who pays what in Asia for PL football one day some time in the future Chelsea will likely pay someone £300k per week and United aren’t far away from that already with Zlatan allegedly on circa £260k per week although he joined on a free which would have strengthened his hand but £300k PW is probably still some way off at Chelsea.

All of the above clouds the issue in respect of Costa though, the supposed £300k per week that Costa wants to sign an extended contract is pure speculation by Sky Sports News who are not beyond wild speculation and getting it wrong on occassion and realistically how would they know anyway.

Chelsea’s highest paid player is Hazard allegedly on £200k per week and he is clearly the clubs most valuable player because whilst Costa might be worth circa £80m to a Chinese club his value to a European club is likely to be around half of that and the club won’t pay Costa £100k pw more than Hazard earns even if they could afford to which based on the last financials they seemingly can’t.

Medium to long term the Costa situation remains hazy imo Conte’s management philosophy doesn’t allow for players to rock the team boat so there are question marks imo about how keen Conte will be to retain Costa past this season anyway and even if Conte was keen to retain him without Costa commits to a new contract with only two years left on his contract come the summer it might well be in the clubs best interests financially to move him on next summer anyway.

Short term the ideal solution for both the club and the player is that Costa puts whatever went on behind him now and continues until the end of this season in the same form as the first half of the season and hopefully that is what will happen.

Where we go from there will eventually sort itself out one way or another in close season without of course Conte does decide he wants Costa long term and a sensible compromise is achieved by both parties on wages with Costa committing himself to a new contract.

It is after all ” a funny old game Saint” 🙂

Reports are indicating that Costa has made one demand if he is about to sign a contract. he is alleged to have demanded to double his wages and can’t understand why some of his team mates are earning more than him at the club. The club is said to have offered him a 5 year contract worth of £225k per week. and Costa demanded negotiations with club about contract extension should be reopened before he makes peace with the club.

sorry but if this really true than rather let him go come end of season, I dont believe the club should put up with such ridiculous high demands its basically another form of extortion, and you know what happens next if we give in every player that is performing above expectations will demand ridiculous wages

Pagan; Different issues no? Will we lose sponsors to China/Asia? No. it’s our players, fans (especially England) history and atmosphere that sells European football. Can you really see a Tianjin packing 90k per game with an atmosphere like Liverpool v UTD? Not to mention the time zone. I can’t in my lifetime. Money only goes so far. Money in Russia/US has not stopped the inflationary bubble in Europe. Not to mention Asia will never home grow like Spain Italy Germany and dare I say.. England.

Secondly, new broadcasting deal not impacting our ticket prices, fully agree. If only! Take Germany’s model as an example of how clubs could subsidise in today’s crazy game. In Chelsea’s case, I accept it is the price we pay for Romans generosity, even then chelsea have frozen ticket prices for 5 years V arsenal and spurs.

Lastly the TV packages are a monopoly of held by one provider. Hence why sentanta, espn and now BT sport have all paid big to break sky’s dominance and take some of the game packages. Therefore as subscriptions go up, UK competition law means no one company can provide all games. Thus there will always be a bidding war meaning the prices of packages and therefore clubs broadcasting deals continue to rise. Perhaps not at the extreme rate of the last deals increase on the previous but yeah… I can’t see a way they could bring the price down even if they wanted to.. which I agree with you they surely do.

Money and football have always been intertwined, from Norris bribing arsenal
Into the top division, to Blackburn buying shearer and Sutton to win the prem, Chelsea’s completely legitimate rise to the top of English football and Man City’s shady Etihad deal bringing them notably less trophies with more money spent. Hard to break the trend now
