Just seen we are missing Sissoko tomorrow night as well now. Time for Poch to think outside of the box in my opinion.

Dele will probably be played alone side Wanyama but Dele isn’t a holding player, his first thought is to get forward.

I did mention this idea last season, when we lost Dembele for the final few games.. In my opinion Vertonghen should be pushed up to play alongside Wanyama, we have an able replacement for him in Wimmer. Jan is defensive minded and tomorrow we will need a point at least, so we need to be strong in that holding position.

    Anyone have Poch’s email??

Ps. Poch said Dier and Dembele both had cramp after the Sunderland game, well this seems to be a huge concern now. Seems they may both may have hamstring issues, hope I am wrong though.

I was one of many I’m sure who thought we had a lot of mid-fielders about a week ago… 🙂

I understand and to a degree agree with your comment above about pushing Van the Man up a bit and including Wimmer, but a larger part of me says keep the defence as similar as possible. Play Wimmer by all means, but don’t confuse Van in the process. Let’s not deliberately play players out of position. Rest them, let the back-ups play….

Winks to partner Wanyama in midfield. Makes total sense without being too defensive in a must win game. Jan and Victor in the midfield just wouldn’t be successful. Wimmer and Jan for CB or even CCV. I have a lot of faith in our youngsters, as long as we don’t play too many at one time they will only get better.

Though sadly, Poch will probably drop Carroll into midfield instead of Winks. He is a nice enough guy but he just isn’t of the required quality, especially as there are better younger players available in his position.

TKO what is a CCV? Is it similar to a CCJ?

It’s just important not to get this position on the pitch wrong, Jan would be my first choice to fill in. Winks in alongside Wanyama also makes sense. I see Poch going with Dele though and he is far more effective further up the pitch.

Either way, like you all I just hope the team can put in a good solid performance and come away with the points.

    No worries!

CCV decided to sort out a CV after his CCJ problems from the DVLA and a failed MOT. He needed his NI number, HSBC card and DOB handy! But then he realised that he will be in the Spurs starting lineup, against CSKA and for years to come and he would never need to claim JSA. OMG this is bad, restless night sadly.

Really looking forward to tomorrow night, I believe there will be mixed emotions from the players in the hostile Russian atmosphere as reported by the press.

Great chat – this forum needs more banter. I have a really positive feeling about this season – I really do think our squad has some depth to it and we can really do something this season.

Starting 11 doesn’t look too bad considering the injuries, that’s a painful looking bench though

Well mannered game but nothing impressive. No one had a great game, Son was the bright spark and N’Koudou looked exciting. Lamela had a very fruitless game but one thing I did notice is that he was leading from the front, shouting at team mates in order for them to stay focused, more of this please. Janssen didn’t have a good game but then no one did however he needs to balance his target man duties with being a proper striker. I have faith in him and even if it takes till next season for him to get going, we have seen the benefits of being patient with the likes of Son and Lamela. Vertonghen worries me. He seems to have lost that edge which gained him great reputation, I sit firmly on the position that Wimmer should be starting. Good to see Winks out, linked up well for 5+ minutes he had.

The CSKA fans were great, non-stop noise! That stadium looks impressive too, a proper football stadium not like that converted sports hall in the East End.

Let the Son continue to shine.

thekickoff – i agree with most of what you say but I think you are being a little harsh – to have 73% possession or whatever it was away from home (and in the hostile atmosphere of Moscow) means we are doing something right. We had 20 + shots on goal compared to their 7 so again I like what we r doing. The main issue we have is not being clinical enough – we creat by far the most chances of any team in the league – we desperately need to start converting more of these to goals to take the pressure off our defence who will always be vulnerable to counter attack due to our high line.

Second in league and 1pt off top in our champs group makes me a happy Northern Irishman!

I absolutely agree with you Dazza. The game reminded me very much of our recent win over Sunderland. Totally dominated, applied relentless pressure, more attempts than you could shake a stick at, and came away inevitably with the three points. On another night with a bit more luck in front of goal it could easily have been three or four nil.
It’s a measure of our progress under Poch that these days it seems winning is no longer enough…apparently we have to win in style.?
    Happy days…long may it continue.

The goals will come. We played really well considering there were so many missing. I would like to have seen Nkoudou on the pitch at the same time as Janssen. I thought Lamela looked really good – always looking for that final little pass down the channels. One day we are going to really destroy someone. City on the weekend hopefully

Missed the first half due to work commitments, but saw all of the second half on telly, sat with a nice cold pint of Greenking IPA.

I thought, even in this half alone, it could have been 3 to the Spurs with a little bit of luck. So what could it have been if the first half was counted?

I actually think Janssen is doing a really good job up there. Would I like to see him in the goals? For sure I would! But, am sure we will see them come along like buses soon enough. He is getting in the right positions, it’s just not happening. But he works hard and brings other players in to the game, and it’s tough to be critical when a player is doing that.

Really like the look of Winks. It is early days, but it seems he is what Carroll has not become. Now he is a bit older, he appears to have added bulk where once he was a skinny teen! Looks very promising – not wishing to tempt providence.

Kevin (the winger guy) looked a great prospect when he came on. It changed it up a lot. A player to get us off our seats has been missing for a long while now! Hop-skippety-scuddo past the opposition defenders was great to see, and a willingness to chase back. Also appeared to have that football intelligence which some previous players have lacked. We shall see – too early to be sure of this fella!

A great result and pleasing on the eye! It really is coming together. Great squad depth now.

Bloggy, Rickys Beard, Wiltspur – great to hear from you gents – I agree that our future looks good. We have so many exciting prospects I’m not too sure where to start. All you have to do is watch our match against Gillingham – great performances by our youngsters. Exciting times ahead.

Great performance from the boys last night! To play away in a hostile atmosphere, missing keys players the pressure was on. Thought we controlled the game well, CSKA were obviously going to have chances at this level all teams do but we kept our composure and got the result needed.

I stay we kept our composure, it actually went missing soon after we scored but luckily Winks came on and calmed us all down. How about that a young lad with a mature head, playing simple passes and taking the sting out of the game. Future is indeed bright!

Janssen made some great runs but just didn’t get the ball played through early enough and also in my opinion he needs to take more responsibility, great example last night he let Dele take the ball of him in the middle of the park when really it was him who should have drove forward with the ball. He will come good and N’Koudou, wow that boy looks exciting!!

    Bring on City!!

    DP,

Was at that Gillingham game. I had travelled 3 hours and more to get there to hear “11 changes from the weekend.” At first I was a bit gutted, but then saw a lot of the youngsters were starting. I didn’t think Gillingham would offer much of an opposition so took it as a good chance to see the youngsters up close.

They played really well on the night. We saw 4 of the goals but my 9 year old were flagging and we had 3 hours to home, so we left early. As a result I missed seeing Marcus Edwards whom I really wanted to see play – The English Messi as he is described. Hey-ho, never mind! Heard the fifth go in as we ran up the road to the train.

Great atmosphere. The Shelf were in good voice and spirits all night! My lad loved it! (I might have a bit also).

    Lucksterk,

Big shout that by Poch to put Winksy on!

As you said, once we scored, the pressure was on us a bit, so putting the lad on showed great faith.

Think Janssen off was a bit of needing him fit for Sunday as our only officially fit forward.
