Don’t know if there is any truth in the story but it certainly makes sense. Apparently we are opening up talks with Diego to offer him an extended contract with a pay rise of circa 50k per week
Have to say that assuming that Conte will see out his contract, and possibly extend it assuming we continue to do well, then it does seem as though Diego enjoys playing for him and in his formation so it is the obvious thing to do (IMO)
Guess that would leave a question mark over Michy as he may feel that he does not have much of a future at Chelsea but on the assumption that once we return to Europe we will remain in Europe then I could easily see Michy getting many more opportunities than he has had so far this year
Regardless, based on current form it is abundantly clear that Diego is the main man and we should do all we can to keep him for as long as possible. KTBFFH
December 20, 2016 at 1:33 pm #1381471100% agree 1905 especially now Conte has calmed him down a tad.
Is there currently a better all round striker in Europe? I’m not sure there is.
December 20, 2016 at 2:07 pm #1381597well Messi and Ronaldo are still scoring freely every game but then again the opposition is obviously far easier
December 21, 2016 at 9:12 pm #1383175Reports in the press suggest that Costa has told teammates that he intends to accept a new £200k pw contract offer from Chelsea???
December 22, 2016 at 8:06 am #1383346I think that Costa is settled and more than happy playing under Conte so I would fully expect him to sign a contract extension. KTBFFH
December 22, 2016 at 8:18 am #1383379He just needs to start learning to speak English 🙂
December 26, 2016 at 9:56 am #1387384As much as credit is given to Antonio Conte for turning Costa’s form and cleaning up his disciplinary record. i feel equally credit goes to Guus Hiddink as he turned Costa up to play as proper CF. Hiddink has done some great job about Costa and Hazard. and Conte has carried from there. both managers deserve equal credit. but Conte has gone far by sorting Courtois, the CM and the defence.
February 1, 2017 at 7:34 am #1427090Last nights penalty miss… It got me thinking again. Saw this thread about paying him more and what has happened this season… Thought I’d throw some statistics at you all. Feel free to check them. I had a loose half hour this morning.
In six games against over three years:
Liverpool x 2
Manc City x 1
Arsenal x 2
United x 1
Tott x 1Essentially 7 goals in 30 games against our rivals. Essentially one goal in every five games. Is that return good enough, does that make Diego Costa world Class or a flat track bully?
Granted other areas of his game are phenomenal and it is about the complete package. But it leaves me thinking…
February 1, 2017 at 7:59 am #1427103agree RDP. thought he was awful last night and penalty miss to round it off, he seemed a little uninterested particularly in the first half!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He wont be here next season thats for sure, already got a few quid on that.February 1, 2017 at 10:25 am #1427234Yep costa wont be here next season. Thats the easy part. Who we replace him with will be the hard part
February 1, 2017 at 10:46 am #1427250BP – funny how people see things differently. Personally I thought Costa led the line well with little support especially from Hazard who was a passenger IMO, which left us playing effectively with 10 players
RDP – interesting stats and continues with what you said about Costa in Europe and internationally. Based on what you have produced (bearing in minds that stats can be interpreted to suit any argument) it would appear that apart from the top six, Costa is great in the EPL only…?
Must admit that I would hold fire on my judgement regarding Europe as under Conte he is a new player who is working probably harder than at anytime in his Chelsea career so would that mean a change of result on the pitch – not sure but willing to give him the benefit of the doubt..?
As you say, then there is the question of his overall contribution and what he adds to the Club. All pundits appear to think he does well and his contribution is good but again they can be blind if the want to be
For me, I think he is a good solid target man on the pitch and I am more than happy that he plays for Chelsea. I have no idea if he wants to leave at the end of the season or not but if he wanted to stay then I personally would be happy and would welcome an extension of his contract
The bigger issue for me is his cover and at the moment I am not convinced that Michy is the man – but time will tell on that one…? KTBFFH
February 1, 2017 at 11:31 am #14272951905. It’s an interesting conundrum really. I haven’t included assists in that list which would make it potentially different.
As target men go he’s up there. Is he say Vieri or Drogs class? Jury is out for me on that. What those stats do point to is a man who struggles a little against top class sides. That is obviously down to teams better protecting the goal, better standard of defenders/ goalkeepers and sometimes they’ll go two onto him and mark him out of the game. I’d also offer in his defence the fact that Costa is often the sole striker at the club and carries a lot on his shoulders and he needs someone who can take that weight off of him.
What we do know is that is an outstanding player who can tear defences apart on his day. I’d point to his performance against PSG as to the ability he has… but can he produce that level more consistently. He was also against Luiz in two at the back that night. But, there is uncertainty for me in him being a top top player.
Conte obviously rates him and has got him playing as he was in his first season for us. That is good. But, with Abumenyang being available in the summer, does the club stick or twist or go down say the Dembele celtic link and try Michy as well. The latter is a player I’d like to see given more minutes at the club.
Having listed the above, Costa does score against Arsenal. 2 in five so he should be due a goal on the weekend. Get your cash on him early this week for all you gamblers out there.
February 1, 2017 at 12:48 pm #1427350RDP – a problem indeed…!!
I think we have to give Michy a full season and then for Conte to make his judgement call on whether to keep him or not. I cannot offer any indication as to why he has not got more games or game time but can only assume that from training, Conte does not feel confident enough in him
When we mention players like Abumenyang my first thought is that although he may be good on the continent (in this case Germany) would he be able to cut it in the EPL and how long will it take for him to be effective…?
Standard questions I guess when you buy anyone from overseas but you can see with Michy for example this is not an exact science and mistakes can and will be made
I guess that’s why we pay Conte big bucks but my underlying feeling is that if Costa really wants to stay and commits to a new contract then the Club would stick with him (but what do I know…?) KTBFFH
February 1, 2017 at 1:44 pm #14273981905.. It’s interesting when we talk about elite sports because you hear the olympians and top end athletes explaining how they get half a second off their times or run five minutes longer at a faster speed and the efforts it takes in training.
that’s my issue with Costa, What will it take for him to start demolishing top teams? It’s conte’s dilemma too. He’s a man who has got the best out of this squad, but next season is a step up for all concerned because presumably we’ll have the CL… he has to raise the squad levels for it… But then that is half the fun of being a fan and from all the evidence. Conte is the man to do it and he’ll call the shots until the players return the receipts and want him out.
February 1, 2017 at 2:03 pm #1427421Cant bealive people are mentioning michy as if he hasnt had a proper chance. It wasnt contes singing and he clearly has no confidence in him. From what iv seen of him this season and iv seen every game hes played. He looks completely out of place, all pundits have said tbe same. Ray wilkins said the same. I just dont think hes good enough at all. He needs to be loaned to a prem team who will start him weekly to see if he cAn get used to it. His desicion making is just awful
February 1, 2017 at 2:53 pm #1427474RDP – I think we both agree that Conte is the right man to get the best out of his players and for us to do well in the CL
He is the only one capable of knowing if he can get any more out of Costa or if he feels that he is going be capable in the CL. So I see the following:
1. Costa wants to leave anyway in line with some of the rumours. No issue – we have to buy
2. Costa wants to stay and Conte has the faith in him to deliver. No issue
3. Costa wants to stay but Conte does not have the faith. I guess a bit more awkward but I would expect Costa to be sold only if we can get a decent replacementGetting the replacement, as we saw this Summer, is no easy task and due to the money from China, I am sure will cost a pretty penny as well
In the end, it is down to the manager to make a judgement call on any player and this will have a direct impact on his career at Chelsea as he is totally reliant on getting good results – nothing new then…!! KBFFH
February 1, 2017 at 6:27 pm #14276221905. 100 percent chap. The guy is a beast on his day, lets see if he ups his game between now and the end of the season starting with Arsenal on the weekend.
Phwepsi. I mentioned it earlier in the season, but i think more players coming to the league are taking longer to adapt. I’d also argue in his defence that he’s really not been given a proper run out, you might find he’s only really played 90 or so minutes league football off the bench. Im not sure that’s a fair crack as Costa has been in strong form. He’s stuck between a rock and a hard place. more game time could see him integrate better… but loaning him out would mean we only have one recognised striker at the club and Costa has been known to pick up a knock and injury.
February 1, 2017 at 6:31 pm #1427626Costa is just the sort of striker the Arsenal defenders hate facing. Hopefully he’s on song and not taking any pens. 🙂
February 2, 2017 at 8:42 am #1427975RDP – hoping he tears in the Arsenal defence in the same way that Drogs used to and we humiliate them this weekend
Totally agree that Michy has been unlucky that Costa has changed his game around so much and been in fine form (I noticed he even acknowledged Mignolet with a pat after the penalty save…!!)
On current form you can see why Conte will not drop Costa. Therefore, Michy is feeding of crumbs here and there apart from the FAC. I guess if we could get a few more games won earlier than we are currently then maybe Michy would get 15/20 minutes rather than 15/20 seconds at the end…!!
But surely that is the life of a substitute striker and I would hazard a guess that just as many of us expected Costa to get more bans due to his aggressive play than he has that thinking could have been part of the reason that Michy joined as well. So I blame Conte…!! KTBFFH
February 2, 2017 at 9:16 am #1428018re the penalty-first of all I thought it was a bit harsh, secondly if I remember correctly Fabregas was on at that stage and he is the recognized penalty taker when Hazard is off, though I admit even Hazards penalties make me worry. The only reason Costa gave Mignolet a pat for saving the penalty was to give the impression it was a great save, actually it was a reasonably easy save as the penalty was too close to him. You need to stick those penalties in the corner otherwise if the keeper goes the right way and theres a 50% chance of that he should save them
