Considering how tight the English Premier League fixtures are, and with some teams participating in the Uefa Champions League, Europa League and the rest of them competing in the FA Cup, do we still need the League Cup tournament as well?
Following up the suggestion of winter break, surely that will have an affect towards the fixtures as well, it will be even more congested. I find it rather discouraging to see players have to perform in 3 matches within a week. Not only fatigue but there’s risk of injuries as well, at the expense of the bigger teams who participate in the Uefa Champions League and also the Europa League.
We’ve seen teams from the top division assigning their second team to compete in the League Cup tournament, some may argue this is good for them to have more game time, but some may argue that it’s disrespectful. I suggest, there’s no need from teams from the top division to play in the League Cup tournament, just hand the spots over to the rest of the teams from the lower divisions. Maybe I’m being silly but I’m just sharing my opinion. What do you think?
July 26, 2016 at 4:24 pm #1132131They’ve all got huge first team squads and development squads, that’s close to 50 players plus academy players, there’s no reason clubs can’t find a balance to participate in the league cup in my opinion. Some clubs will obviously prioritise other competitions and that’s ok too.
July 26, 2016 at 4:46 pm #1132146I love the League Cup and Liverpool have the most in this competition so my natural answer is yes.
Plus, it’s a gateway to Europe if won.
July 26, 2016 at 4:52 pm #1132161I agree with Dandy’s position. All I’d add is that for Prem teams a limited squad for the League Cup should be named prior to competition start so as to avoid clubs fielding second tier teams in the early stages, only to bring out their big guns in the semis/final.
July 26, 2016 at 4:56 pm #1132164Yes, no need to deprive anyone of it just because 3 or 4 times choose not to prioritise it
July 26, 2016 at 5:02 pm #1132185They should do what Knotter suggested years ago. Let the European qualifiers drop out, give it a massive pot of cash and turn it into a British Cup with Scottish English Welsh and Northern Irish clubs competing.
Have the early rounds in each individual country with a latter stages going forward into a British Competition. Televised on Terrestial TV so that youngsters can see it.
In a few years it would become an established part of the football scene and something a little different.July 26, 2016 at 5:05 pm #1132188100% agree with Dandy all clubs have squads big enough to cope and there are no replays.
I do think we could do away with the two legged semi final though and go for a one off semi final at a neutral venue.
July 26, 2016 at 5:16 pm #1132191I’m with Knotter in allowing the option for teams with European commitments to drop out.
The other solution along the lines of what Dandy pointed out is pick a 22 (embedded with youth) purely to participate with this comp.
July 26, 2016 at 5:25 pm #1132203If it’s not broke don’t try and fix it, it remains a good competition with a Wembley Final and a European place all clubs are happy to participate and clubs have massive squads and development squads to cope with it whether they are competing in Europe or not.
July 26, 2016 at 5:31 pm #1132206I like Knotter’s idea, although I think it would devalue the comp if the big hitters dropped out. Those with European commitments can always field a team based upon their respective resources at any given time, which is a fundamental part of fielding any team in any comp anyway.
July 26, 2016 at 5:48 pm #1132221Nine, maybe it’s down to the FA to showcase both the League and the FA Cup finals a shed lot better.
Whilst I find it 200% painful not to have the old twin tower Wembley, let’s get back to tradition like playing the League Cup Final in April like it used to be, 3’o’clock, and the FA Cup on a Saturday, again with a 3’o’clock kick off.
I’ve noticed in even more recent times, the way the Premier League is marketed, there is so much hype.
We shouldn’t be devaluing our domestic cup competitions in my view just because of the ridiculous amounts of money in circulation surrounding the PL and CL not to mention, the glamour.

July 26, 2016 at 6:10 pm #1132236Banjo quite likes Knotter’s idea, distance from the FA Cup, and may in turn bring a bit of prestige back the both cups. Right now, they’re a bit the same to me…I mean the same to Banjo… 🙂

July 26, 2016 at 7:15 pm #1132254Manthistle thinks the FA cup is enough. No other European country has 2 domestic cups. Might bring a bit of prestige back to the FA cup.
How many teams actually take it seriously?
Either scrap it or like Knotter suggests withdraw all European qualifying clubs.
July 26, 2016 at 8:06 pm #1132269Srd always thought it was a bit weird with two cups. And he almost saw a squirrel today. The FA Cup should be THE cup.
There can be only one!
July 26, 2016 at 8:22 pm #1132284Manthistle should tell himself that France has 2 domestic cup comps.Wonder what N.Bendtner thinks of himself!!!.
Scotland too ???.July 26, 2016 at 8:28 pm #1132290🙂
July 26, 2016 at 10:02 pm #1132371Ash, take our the top 7 qualifiers for Europe in the PL and the top qualifiers in Scotland out of the equation and you have a competition that would be unattractive to both fans, sponsors and TV companies alike.
Bournemouth v Ross County on a cold wet night in November doesn’t quite have the pull of Bournemouth v Manchester United does it.
Can’t see it ever happening and that’s before the Wicked Witch of the North attempts to ensure that Great Britain doesn’t exist anymore anyway.???
July 26, 2016 at 10:11 pm #1132377Bournemouth versus anyone doesn’t sound that attractive but the league cups will progress without the top teams in England soon anyway. I doubt the top teams in Scotland would drop out of a British Cup and by the time they came to enter the competition they would be out of Europe usually. The league cups in England and Scotland would proceed as they do now, it would only be the latter stages that would include a British element. By that time Arsenal would be eligible to compete most seasons ha ha ha……
Btw Knotter has been confirmed in his suspicion that there are some pi** taking gits on this sight but is far too classy to take the bait. ha ha ha -
