Okay let’s assume we have a fully fit squad, what is your first 11 and 7 on the bench, here is mine for starters. 4-2-3-1

    GK – Migs

    LB – Robertson
    RB – TAA
    CB – Matip
    CB – Lovren

    CM – Henderson
    CM – Can

    ACM – Coutinho
    ALW – Mane
    ARW – Salah

    ST – Firmino

    Bench
    GK – Karius
Def – Gomez (covers CB or either FB)
Mid – Milner (covers either full back or CM)
    Def – Klavan
Mid – Ox ( covers right across the attacking 3)
Mid – Lallana (Can play Coutinho role or either side)
    ST – Sturridge

So for a match day squad that leaves out – Ward, Moreno, Flano, Clyne, Gigi, Grujic, Ejaria, Ings, Solanke & Woodburn

Some tough choices for Klopp with Moreno, Clyne and Gigi thought of as first team starters not even on the bench, okay he won’t have to worry about Clyne for a bit, but I would also like to see at least one more striker on the bench possibly in place of Klavan. What’s every ones thoughts.

Tough on Gini. Do you need Klavan on the bench if you have Gomez?

ned – That is what makes it a discussion, put up your 18 if you have a different one, that was my main stumbling point, but then I thought if you did lose a second CB, things could get a bit tricky.

We play 4-3-3 but I’d start with that 11 in a 4-3-3 formation. Very strong team

Winji on bench for me and just missing out on 1st 11.

Really like him and I can never understand people who can’t see what he brings to the team. He has the lungs of a horse. Shields the ball so well and keeps us moving. He has bad games but he steps up in big games. Terrific range of assign. People have to remember he was a no 10 or played in the left. He’s now a box to box midfielder and a fine ine at that. I think some people think every player has to play unreal through balls or score every game to show what they bring to the team

Can aswell. Another very good player who gets wrote off far too easily

    In my preferred 244 formation.

Karius in goal as I find him more imposing.

Matip and Gomez as the central partnership, both got pace to burn.

Out wide Milner and Henderson, in the middle Can and Wijnaldum.

Then a front four with Salah, Mane, Coutinho and Firmino.

It would be the most entertaining side/formation Anfield has ever seen.

Pax>> Yes, you’ve probably just about nailed our starting XI there – with the possible exception of right back. The scenario here is a fully fit/available squad and Clyne didn’t do too much wrong from a defending perspective last season – so he should still edge it until such a time that TAA has made an incontrovertible claim. That said, I wouldn’t be too surprised to see Milner there for the really key fixtures (with Clyne still out) as he’d surely make a better right back than a left back.

Sean, I agree with kopite, he doesn’t turn up in away games, in fact, correctly if I’m wrong, he has yet to score away during his career in the PL.

    Migs
    TAA – Matip – Lovren – Robertson
    Lallana – Can – Wijnaldum
    Salah – Firmino – Mane

    Bench:
Ward, Gomez, Milner, Henderson, Chamberlain, Coutinho, Ings

I found the bench to be much more difficult than the picking of the actual first 11. I wanted to put Coutinho in there but I was never as convinced as you guys were of his all round game when it comes to playing deeper in the Cm role. Wijnaldum ended last season in a bad patch and he started this one in one also but the last 2 games have seen him back to his best. Coutinho can ‘out magic’ anyone but I think Wijnaldum will make for a much more steady CM than him, especially when we’re on the back foot. That said, I don’t think Gini gets enough credit for his offensive play.

The CM is definately where I have problems drawing up a best 11 though. If Wijnaldums form drop again then Coutinho could get in there and stay there for the rest of the season. He’s gained a lot of experience since he was last played at CM for us, so maybe he won’t vanish from games like he used to. Also with Henderson/Can, I think on their day they can both be excellent players. I still feel that on the whole, neither player offers us enough but my feeling is that Can is likely to develop and deliver more and more (if we play him and keep him), where as Henderson is unfortunately at the mercy of a heel condition.

Lallana picks himself, for me. He really gets Klopp’s football and his interplay with the forwards is always a joy to watch. He knows when to run into space and even though he has limitations, I feel that himself and Klopp have largely negated his short-comings by making full use of his qualities.

The front line will obliterate defences this season.

Oh also, I’d like to see space for Woodburn appear on that bench but I couldn’t drop anyone. I wonder if Klopp might nudge him up and give him a game soon.

Liverlad, ye he hasn’t scored but I remember clearly he turned up in massive away games. Everton away on a horrible night, he got stuck in, kept the back well and played a good ball out wide into the lead up to the goal. Atesnal away assist for lakanna goal. Utd away still going righ at the end and could have scored. He stood up in that game when we had a depleted team. City away he was excellent.

He can do a lot more and 6 goals and 9 assists last season for a box to box player is good. Look at him closely, he’s always defending in our box aswell as one of the first in the opposing box. The majority of fans live him. He has his own song so must be popular lol

I agree he has his failings. I love him though. Totally new position and he has done well. He needs that away goal as you say. You can see how much it means to him when he scores. He reminds me a bit of Ronnie whekan but has a king way before he hits Robbie’s heights. Just my opinion liver lad mate and it was harsh of me to say, I don’t understand that others don’t appreciate him as that’s just your opinion aswell

People are very quick to write people off after a while as we saw with can last season.

    Hi Sean.
Good post & I understand your summary, but for me he is too inconsistent, also his defensive headers are awful. I do hope my thoughts on him come back to bite me.
About songs Origi had one ????

I’m with Sean on this one. I’ll go so far as to say that besides the last 4 or so games last season and the first few, that Wijnaldum has been very consistent. He does need to get this away goal duck out of the way but as Sean suggested, this is not a good indication/marker for his performance levels away from home.

He has 9 assists and beyond that he also has a hand in the creation of some of our best plays/goals that he doesnt get the assist for because his work is often done a stage earlier than the final pass.

Pretty much agree except I would also put Gini in for Couts until we see where little Phil’s head is. Would love to see Gomez make centre back his and Robertson do the same for LB.

Holy crap they can’t be serious about Karius being our starting GK in the C/L. Did they not see his debacle last time out, he nearly cost us a couple of goals. He is an accident waiting to happen IMO & will cost us goals the way he waffles around at the back.

    Here’s my first 18:

    GK: Mignolet
    Defenders: Gomez, Matip, Lovren, Robertson
    Midfielders: Can, Henderson, Coutinho
    Forwards: Salah, Firmino, Mane

    Subs:
Ward, Klavan, Alexander-Arnold, Wijnaldum, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Sturridge, Solanke

    Honorable mentions:
    Lallana, Milner, Woodburn

I for one have never rated Clyne and considering that no one has him in their fit 18 I’d say that’s justified. Both TAA and Gomez are better going forward. For me at this moment Gomez is better defensively and adds a bit more height to this team so he edges it. Still not fully convinced with Moreno yet. Everytime he seems to turn a corner he goes back to his old ways.

Wijnaldum always seems to disappear in the away games. Also Coutinho is way better even with his head up his A*se. Can and Hendo for me provide that much needed physicality in midfield. Can’t quite put my finger on why I’d have Gini ahead of Lallana but I feel he offers more. Personally feel Milner is past it and is just there to fill in some gaps when needed. Woodburn wouldn’t look out of place on the bench IMO but just isn’t experienced enough yet.

That front 3 speaks for themselves. On the bench Solanke gives us that power and physicality up front, Ox gives us that pace, trickery and endeavor out wide and Sturridge is deadly on his day.

My only disappointment with the team Klopp has assembled is our options at CB. Personally don’t feel Lovren or Klavan are good enough to get near the first 11. Even a loan for Howedes like Juve did would have improved us significantly while we try to bring in VVD, but otherwise I think this team is as good as any out there.
