Because VAR will be used, why spoil something we have every 4 years.
March 17, 2018 at 12:49 pm #1613622Another VAR controversy in the Spurs v Swansea game. Lovely goal by Son ruled as offside as the VAR decision was “inconclusive”, even though it was onside, so the on-field decision must be upheld. Blimey the WC is going to be fun, cough cough.
March 18, 2018 at 8:53 am #1613929I think there are much bigger problems ahead in respect of this World Cup than VAR.
March 21, 2018 at 12:21 pm #1615110VAR is awful and not even remotely ready to be used. If this is the future then football is dead.
VAR fans are the sort of people that clap when a plane lands
March 21, 2018 at 12:24 pm #1615111i do if im on it 😉
March 21, 2018 at 1:28 pm #1615146Have to agree VAR has been a farce, but as far as the Spurs goal against Swans it was the correct decision given by the lino, but then checked on VAR, there is one recurring issue and that is the fans in the stadium not knowing what is going on, or being able to see the VAR in action. The other problem on Saturday was the VAR misleading people watching on the telly, they put the line along Son and the defenders feet, but people that know the rules could see that his knee was in front of his foot, so even though his foot was in line his knee was offside meaning he was offside.
March 21, 2018 at 9:32 pm #1615280It’s a farce for many reasons other than VAR. The world cup has become a joke. Political show business with nothing whatsoever to do with sport in it’s true sense. I wouldn’t care one iota if all international matches were abandoned. I only care about my club and whether England beat France or Brazil beat Argentina is of no interest to me at all
March 25, 2018 at 7:29 pm #1616321The world cup is no longer the best nations in the world competing if you look at some of the nations that so called qualified while some of the top footballing nations want be there. Talking about national teams that would slaughter some of the qualifiers
March 25, 2018 at 8:17 pm #1616335I honestly hope I’m wrong but a potentially problematical World Cup for England fans has just got even worse and I truly fear for what might happen in Russia to some England fans.
March 25, 2018 at 10:21 pm #1616350It’s going to be problematic on so many levels….it won’t just be English football fans in the cross hairs of Russian hooligans. Gay/lesbian fans as well as black supporters will unfortunately cop it. Russian football fans have serious previous as per racism and homophobia.
March 25, 2018 at 11:04 pm #1616352And they’ll all be guttered on vodka.
March 27, 2018 at 9:00 am #1616723I know of 4 people who have shelved plans to go to Russia all family men who feel that the risk is not worth taking. One of them had a previous run in with the Russian “fans ” and he is convinced they were all military trained,if correct who organised and gave that the go ahead ?? .
March 27, 2018 at 9:11 am #1616731I reckon two things will/will not happen.
One, the oiks you’ve seen on that bridge in Amsterdam and who got arrested won’t go within a thousand miles of Russia this summer.
Two, the hooligan mobs in Russia do seem very well connected politically and probably to the military too like you say Shinehead. I’d imagine they will be handsomely paid to stand down while the World Cup is on as with the eyes of the world on Russia they won’t want to make the wrong sort of show of themselves.
Like your family men though, I wouldn’t take the risk either. Speaking to people who went to France and go regularly away with their teams in Europe so know exactly how to avoid mither if you want to…the Russian lot ripped up every rule book going and anybody, anywhere was fair game.
March 27, 2018 at 10:04 am #1616751Shinehead – There was lots of talk about the hooligan training camps in Russia after the trouble in Marseille, so it wouldn’t surprise me.
As to what WG is saying, I agree, this is a big publicity excercise for the Russians and I think the mobs will be stood down in their home country, it is probably a case of ‘Go abroad and cause as much mayhem as you can, but in our country we will show them how to run the competition with no troubles’
Although saying all this, I would not risk it, when we were favourites to get it those years back I was planning to take my son to loads of games with him now being 17 it would be the perfect time, but as soon as it went to Russia that was all shelved, and not because of increased cost, but purely down to location, for the same reason 2022 is out, so I am hoping we can have one to visit in 2026 🙂
March 27, 2018 at 10:18 am #1616759WG & Pax you are probably right about standing down the Russian “fans” . I wonder whether the right wing element which is prevalent in Eastern Europe feel that with the eyes of the world on them that this is their time to shine .
I hope people do stay away, not that we will see empty seats in the stadiums as I’m sure there will be thousands ready to be shipped in at a moments notice .March 27, 2018 at 10:28 am #1616765According to either the totally football show, or football weekly, can’t remember which but they said that tickets taken up by the English were massively down on previous world cup, but there had been little or no effect on ticket sales in many other countries, although to honest what is happen at the moment could see people change their plans.
March 27, 2018 at 11:01 am #1616778On the bright side the current feud with Russia could escalate and there’ll be a boycot of the world cup.
March 27, 2018 at 12:21 pm #1616811Another crap thing about the world cup is how all these people who never watch football suddenly get interested in it and start going on about zonal marking and 442 and how they’re supporting Portugal because Ronaldo’s so great.
I hope there’s a world wide boycott and Russia end up playing Russia reserves and losing.March 27, 2018 at 2:16 pm #1616881Foreign minister Julie Bishop raised the prospect of Australia boycotting the 2018 World Cup in Russia. “There are a whole range of further options … The boycott of the World Cup is one of the further actions that could be taken in relation to this matter,” she said.
I can’t believe it’s only Australia considering this.
March 27, 2018 at 2:30 pm #1616890Nine – I don’t think it is only Australia considering it, I think it must be in the back of the minds of most countries senior figures, I think it will all depend if if, and how much it escales from here, as I can’t see this going away any time soon.
