What an achievement by young Wayne, our greatest ever goal scorer. He’s been quite divisive the last few years but that is a record that I can’t see getting broken for a long time. Bit of a “Dear Shoot…” moment but what are some of your favourite Rooney goals?

Mine was his volley against Newcastle at home about ten years ago. It came straight after he’d had an argument with the ref and was an absolute belter.

was going to say the volley at Newcastle where it sounded like he broke the net

His overhead against City stands out for me.
I also enjoyed his two free kicks in the 8-2 demolition of Arsenal a few years back.
But I tell you what, the one he scored against Stoke yesterday was no weak goal.

The halfway line goal against West Ham was another, but I can’t really split the two mentioned earlier, though the City one meant so much more so I’d plump for that if forced to choose!

I’ve got a few favourite goals from Rooney. The volley against Newcastle was just pure technique, anger, and just irrepressible raw talent but the overhead against City was just sublime – even though he shinned it.

I also really enjoyed the late winner he scored against AC Milan at Old Trafford in the Champion’s Leage in 2006/07 – he smashed it in at Dida’s near post having taken a first time shot from outside the box. It was the first time we had beat a European powerhouse in years and it gave us the confidence to go on and win the Champion’s League in the next season. AC Milan were absolutely immense at the time with players like Nesta, Pirlo, Gattuso, Seedorf, Kaka, Shevchencko etc.

These two stand out for me as classic Utd counter attacking goals, albeit Rooney was one of a few stars in each goal.

In its Context, The Overhead against City. But the Volley against Newcastle as well as the Free-kick when we lost 4-1 at the Etihad were just as good

Excellent suggestion Manthistle, that got me thinking of that couple of years when him and Ronaldo were often in perfect tandem. The first title we won back after Abramovich was a classic season and I remember a cracking game of counter attacking away at Bolton when we won 4-0. It doesn’t seem conceivable now but Bolton were favourites to beat us that day but Rooney and Ronaldo were unplayable. Was just a shame that all too often Rooney got shunted in to that odd role on the left to help out tactically, I reckon he’d be well clear of Bobby Charlton if he hadn’t been bogged down with Fergie’s formations.

Another counter attacking goal Rooney didn’t score but set up was the final goal in the 3-1 win away at Arsenal in the European Cup semi final at the Emirates. By fuck that was a good goal.

Cheers manthistle, one of my favourite goals that. Can’t make the link work to look like yours but here’s the Bolton game I was talking about. Not as I remembered it at all actually, I thought Rooney and Ronnie got two a piece and none of the goals look familiar.
