Well it looks like we have have a lot of different reasons that we are basically not fit for purpose. People blame Matip yet I would say he’s our best defender. Klavan is too slow and off the pace and our best CB combination is clearly Matip and Lovren. At LB we have the car crash that is Moreno and it’s beyond me how we bought a new LB and spent the entire summer trying to get shot of Moreno but now he’s number one choice. It’s been done to death but the VVD situation sums up the state of our club perfectly…Key Stone Cops. This is at least the second time we’ve had the chance to move to the next level in the last seven years yet have failed miserably to do so when funds are clearly there. It’s time to stop making excuses. Everyone knows where our weakness is, we’ve already conceded as many as we’ve scored. We’ve spent over £70m on forward players and just £8m on defence, the area that needed most attention. That’s why I’m sorry to say we will, as usual, regress after making good strides forward. Totally unacceptable.

Red, Wijnaldum was just bullied off the ball, Can didn’t close down De Bruyne earlier enough, he just left him completely unmarked and Klavan should have pushed up to drop off Jesus and Aguero and didn’t. Matip was holding the line in the right spot but clearly not communicating that with Klavan, who along with Matip, was clearly ball watching and the result was Aguero getting his customary goal against us. Rubbish.

Matip not perfect but is still our best defender. But this situation should have been resolved in the summer.

Red herring, as time goes on, I’m becoming less convinced by matip.

For me we need two centre backs. He is our best centre half and reads the game well but he’s not Aggressive enough. Lovren is too aggressive st times and makes so many misjudgements it’s crazy.

The guys are just so out of sync with each other at the back. No seems to know what they are doing. No one knows what their job is.its like it’s cliche but we don’t have leader back there. We are very bad at the back but on some days we can be quite good when everyone clicks etc. We are just to inconsistent and have to many bad days at the back.

That’s it shanksky and bob. Everyone knows were the problem is ,yet it wasnt addressed.

Last season we knew mane was going and never planned for it and it cost us. I hope the same thing doesn’t happen.

Get a settled back 4 if possible and don’t change to many personnel at once at the back.

Down at my local, Matip is known as the ‘invisible man’. Invisible at set pieces, invisible in the penalty area, invisible in the oppositions penalty area for a corner and invisible to criticism. He is visible when receiving the ball, in his own half, with no pressure, to pass it on to the other wing, this apparently makes him class. Lovren is very visible, that’s why he gets so much stick.

Redsforever, I agree that’s what you need mate & we only tick the goal scoring midfielder box, that’s the point I was making. For all our flair we are still a fair way off being title contenders. Top 4 is our goal again this season & hopefully we will strengthen where we need in the next couple of windows & be closer to a title challenge soon after.
I’ll be just enjoying the good performances & watching a team that attacks & I guess we will just have to accept we will be conceding for fun at the other end as well.

Lovren makes lots of individuals errors, so does Klavan (when played), Matip does not. He’s mr consistent, not always the best defender out there but consistent nonetheless. We have got to think what he has around him.

Having said all that I wouldn’t have been adverse to us getting 2 central defenders in. Problem is we did neither …

Redgee – Don’t mention real people at your local, I did that once and people on here don’t care about people in real life that don’t have a username 🙂

Seen it all now, we take a beating away at City after going down to 10 men early in the second half, and suddenly just one game after beating Arsenal 4-0 we are suddenly not fit for purpose, we are 3 points off the top after already playing City and Arsenal in the first 4 games. Personally I don’t think we are in a bad position, yes we lose Mane for a few games, but even if he misses 3 that will be Burnley and 2 against Leicester, games he may have been rested for due to CL involvement, he will be nice and fresh for the Utd game. Most teams will lose games when they go down to 10, especially in the first half, sorry but I don’t see the need for all the negativity.

Paxman: I haven’t read too many saying we are not fit for purpose or whatever it was you said. From what I see most think we will be there about a for a top 4 finish, do you not think that’s a fair call? It seems to me if you don’t think we will challenge for titles your a doomsdayer or overly negative.
Truth is we have some improvements to make before we can realistically think of challenging for titles & IMO one of those is having a plan b for when blowing teams away with attacking brilliance doesn’t work. Obviously Klopp is the only one that can change this but I’m not sure he will. We will play some great stuff of that there is no doubt but until we get some balance we will continue to fail in our attempts to be one of the big boys again. I think it’ll be a couple of windows before we will get there but I do think we can.
Some of you will call that a negative view & I suppose only time will tell but that’s the reality as far as I’m concerned.

Look i like Rafa i think he was the best manager we have had in my lifetime. One thing to note is he inherited a good centre back pairing the players he brought in defence didn’t all work out LB was a problem throughout his time. Aurelio had injury issues the others all flopped. Arbeloa was a great buy but was sold for £5million. Agger had his injury problems Skrtel was bang avergae. some other names to remember Josemi, Kromkamp, Dossena, Degen, Kyrgiakos.

You don’t see the need for negativity, pax? I must have been watching different games to you. Watford bullied the shit out of us, we held on for a 1-0 win home to Palace which was anything but comfortable, Arsenal would have been hammered by anyone the day we played them and we have just been handed our biggest battering in years at City. Actually you’re right mate, get all your money on us for the title this year.

So when we win we’re lucky and when we lose we’re shite.

Even though we’ve only lost once so far this season.

Dya remember Rodgers last full season getting beat AT HOME 6-1 by Stoke?!

Course you don’t coz that doesn’t suit your narrative does it?
