The guy divides opinions amongst us fans, i really dont know what to make of him. 3 years into hes career with us. Sure he interceps play, tackles well, is mobile, but i just cant get to see that he can make a diffrence when it really matters ( next year when we go for the title ) what do you guys think. I mean the obvious choice would be to get a replacement or for me the glaring choice was kante. 29million! How did jose not see that as a obvious signing????

Herrera’s average mate and any team would struggle to win major trophies with an average holding midfielder, especially in a 4-3-3 set up. Maybe we were in for Kante but he didn’t want to come? There are other holding midfielders around though you know.

I don’t think Herrera can be judged on the last 3 years though. It’s only Mourinho who’s reinvented him into a holding midfielder. LVG had no idea how to use him really. I think he’ll be a very important player for us over the coming years. Mourinho trusts him and I think he plays the role he’s told to very well.
Agree on Kante though, what a player!

Oh, I think he plays where he’s told happy, just don’t think he’s very good mate.

I think you just answered your own question. They are qualities you need in a midfielder of his type. No one else in the team possesses those attributes. Herrera is the perfect comparison to Kante just a poorer version. This doesn’t mean he’s poor though. Midfield is all about getting the perfect balance. If he compliments Pogba, Mkhitaryan and Mata I’m happy for him to play regularly.

I really like Herrera and think he does a great job for us keeping the midfield ticking over and recycling the ball. Win possession and move it on quickly to Pogba/Mata/Mhykhiytryhyan. Dont think he was particularly in Mourinho’s plans early on but he’s convinced him and that’s good enough for me. He’s certainly not guilty of the glaring fucking misses some of our other players are responsible for that would have turned several stuffy draws in to comfortable wins. He’s not a midfield issue for me, replacing Michael Carrick definitely is though.

As for Kante…from what I can gather we went for him but we’re too late, the Chelsea deal was done. Which is a crying shame to me as a midfield three of Kante, Pogba and Herrera would have been smart.

Herrera has done well for us – he performs well in matches, a constant 7 or 7.5 out of 10 sort of player – however I’ve noticed that he can be very frustrating at times and I can’t help but feel that he can be one of the reasons we’re not as great as we can be.

I’ll explain – there are a number of times where I’ve seen us try to start a counter attack and, when the ball is passed to him, the ball either bobbles slightly when he controls it or he pulls the ball backwards and passes back to a defender. In the context of things it’s fine – we’ve kept possession and it’s all good – however we lose a second or two which I can’t help but feel that Scholes, Keane, Fletcher or Carrick of old would control that ball perfectly and get it down the wing ASAP for us to get the counter going at lightning speed. It’s these little things that I’ve noticed about him which makes me think that he has a place in our squad for as long as he’s playing this way however, if we truly want to take the step up to Barcelona’s or Real Madrid’s of this world, we need a truly top class player next to Pogba.

I can compare him to Smalling – he does his job well and gets the plaudits coz he does a good job – another 7 or 7.5 out of 10 player too – however when you see what Bailly and, to a lesser extent, Jones have done this season you begin to think “ah ok, Smalling is good but these guys have a little bit more in their tank and improve our team”.

I agree with @Sympathy,Herrera has done well this season within his own limitations but unfortunately he is not the long term answer to get us where we want to go.He is your typical 6.5 or 7/10 team player that every club needs to have in their squad BUT he is not top class and will never produce 9/10 type performances on a regular basis because he just doesn’t have those sort of tools in his locker, simple as that.

I agree with Sympathy and Blacky. A 7 out of 10 player who does a job. A Fletcher. Good to have in the squad but not the Keano level needed to win titles.

Mac, you took my thoughts and hit the target. We used to say ‘water carriers’ back in years. Remember the famous player having the almighty ‘fight’ with Sir Alex regarding one same water carrier ? And the mother of all arguments over here when some tried in vain to uplift to the same standard as the one and only Keane ?

Herrera is one such player, honest, always applicable to the manager’s whims and whiffs, loyal, wears the shirt with pride and much more but never an ultimate quality concern.

And of course that every manager has his favourites. Remember Sir ousting 2 world class performers simply because they somehow thought fit to tangle with his favourite player ?

These type of players become the fans favourites basically for their limited assets which is fair enough.Herrera could be changed for D.Drinkwater of Leicester or A.Arter of Bournemouth and you would get the 7/7.5 related performance.

The whole point is that United demand and require much more quality, aka Kante, as the 7 markup is just average rating not the best.

My take: I don’t think he’s a bad player and he’s dependable enough and disciplined enough for you to not worry. Long term, he may need replacing. But for now, money on the team is better spent on other positions. Kante would have been a shrewd signing that said.

He should be one of the first replaced. Not enough going forward and has never lost the pass it to the side and pass it to the back that LVG installed into him.

Anyway huffing and puffing isn’t enough you need that bit extra which he hasn’t got.
