Costa is on anything but form. He hasnt scored since hull at home and that was a tap in. I cant remember the last time he scored before that. I also agree the amount of missed oppertunitys due to his desicion making could of put us in the clear against burnley. Its as if he has too much of a point to prove lately

Given he as scored 52 goals in 103 games despite his poor form for the first half of last season, and I’m not sure we could do a lot better to be honest. How many strikers score at a better rate than that in the top tier in England? Outside of him, Drogba and JFH we don’t have a great track record of signing big money strikers, so I am pretty happy with Costa. You can add to the goals 17 assists as well. Whilst he hasn’t scored in the last three games, he created the penalty he missed at Liverpool and it was his header against the bar against Arsenal that led to Alonso’s goal. Sure, he hasn’t been in sparkling form in those games but this shows he is still affecting them. A five year contract for a 28 year old is a bit of a worry, but this day and age, players can keep themselves fit and sharp well into their mid thirties, and we have plenty of evidence at Chelsea to back that up with the likes of Lampard, Zola, JT & Drogba amongst others.

    1905,

You know it is well documented that Costa has hamstring/back issues and when we were playing in all competitions over last 2 seasons Costa got injured a lot. If you are really honest you know Costa can only really be effective for 1 game a week.

    Costa’s Form:

Costa is far from inform, in his last 10 Premier League games he has 3 goals to his name and in his last 7 he has only 1 goal. Recently he has hindered our attack rather than help it in my opinion, his hold up play has been lousy, his ball control and distribution has been all over the place and he has been very unthreatening in front of goal.

bort – must say that I have never heard or read of these issues at all so cannot say for sure whether your claim is accurate or not – but equally no reason to doubt you

Regarding his current form I agree that the goals are not coming as frequently as we would like but then I also accept what Liquidator has written and feel he is still contributing in other ways. My interpretation of your mail/s is that you would prefer that we replace Costa..? If so, who would you want (and not a dig just a question)…? KTBFFH

We don’t need to replace Costa – we need healthy competition and someone to share the burden with him.

I’m a big fan of Costa, but I have to admit I’d be a little concerned about giving him a five year contract on that sort of money. the contract would take him up to 32/33 years old, and we know he hasn’t had the best injury record in the past.

I’m not too concerned by his current loss of form, it happens to all players, and when he is on form there a very few better than him. But I struggle with this contract, unless it is just being used partly to push up his resale value.

If this contract is signed then it is very unlikely the club will bring in another sriker, we paid 33 mil for one last season who just has cameo appearances.
Cant see no resale value, the only ones afer him were the Chinese and that ship may have already sailed.
Fraught with risk just hope the club and conte know what they are doing, if indeed it is true.
Watching CL the last couple of nights, we have some serious catching up to do.
And getting harder and harder for any of the clubs to get the top players into the PL.

BluePylon – i disagree. I think Michy will be loaned out and we will go for someone like Morata or Icardi.

Bluepylon – you make a very valid point about the ability to attract the top players to the EPL anymore

Some will still come and potentially just for the money. But if you simply look at our efforts in the Summer and to a lesser degree in January we were pretty much rebuffed by the majority of our supposed big name targets

I do believe that the option of CL will help our cause plus how Conte is viewed across the footballing world but think it is getting harder. In that respect keeping a player like Costa who is already familiar with the EPL could be seen as a bonus and a wise move (so long as he really wants to stay)…? KTBFFH

1905, spot on mate on all points imo and at the end of the day this wouldn’t be happening without it was what Conte wanted and we need to trust his judgement.

The only negative for me in extending Costa’s contract would be if it were a 5 year contract as he’s 28 and personally I would much prefer a 3 year deal with options thereafter.

But let’s all wait and see what eventually transpires.

Guess the one upside is a long contract gives us more selling power should he want to leave again.

It really doesn’t matter who replaces costa. We didn’t think we could replace drogba until costa came along. This king is dying long live the new king when he comes in the summer. A one trick pony or flat track bully is what we have who doesn’t have the world class level in him. Move him on to the modern football graveyard in china for mega bucks.

Sometimes I think us fans are like battered women. We still love the players regardless of the things they do. costa for nearly half the time he’s been at the club has caused grief. Be it turning up overweight like desperate dan to downing tools before picking his rattles up out the Pram when guus returned. Not a fan and I sympathise like victim support to those who blindly chat his name at the grounds. I’m sure there is a domestic abuse helpline you could phone… let me find the number.

RDP @1.18pm – Let’s not forget the £50m spunked up on Torres in between Drogba and Costa. Not quite as easy to replace a one goal in two games striker, as you make out.

Liquids, after I went through his goal scoring exploits, I was far from convinced about his ability to perform at the top end of the league.

Yes we signed Torres – at the time i was gutted about the signing and remember on the old boards that Suarez was the player to go for in that window.

Don’t forget we had Nicolas anelka who was high end and doing the business for us at the time and lampard banging in goals from midfield.

We’ve had eidur, jimmy, zola, vialli among others… costa isn’t in their league imo

RDP tend to agree, however its not about him being replaced, if this contract is signed he aint going nowhere, he wages will be massive and there is not a team around who will match that, Torres has been mentioned, and exaclty that, massive wages, long contract so we could never get rid
Hence why I aint so sure this reporting on a five contract is correct, said at the time, the club would never make that mistake again.
I might even have a bet he still goes, the club knowing we have to keep him on side until the end of the season

Bp- pretty good points… however, I’m sure there will be a release clause inserted as the interest from china was real and he’ll be on a first class seat with air china come the summer. Adios Diego

RDP – Anelka did a good job for us over a period, but for me, he wasn’t in Costa’s class as an out and out striker, certainly not whilst he was at Chelsea. The other strikers you mention all great players, and very fondly as far as I am concerned, but did any of them match Costa’s goals per game tally? Maybe JFH, but I doubt the others did, so I guess it depends on what league you are referencing?! Not really sure of the relevance of mentioning Lampard -he was a box to box midfielder, albeit a freakish one who outscored most strikers!
