Matip and Lovren will be the first choices. Klavan,Sakho,Gomez will be the back ups

To piggyback Bingo’s thoughts on another thread with Skrtel and Toure gone we have less mistakes. I’d add Sakho to that list too and even go as far as to say that we are better on the ball from the back with Matip, Lovren, possibly Klavan and even Lucas despite his blip ( which was partially due to a weak goal kick).
Something about Matip is really the first hint apart from Agger Of the way Hansen and Lawrenson could carry the ball forward from the back and start moves. Lucas’ distribution has always been good and I would go as far as suggest that a three of Matip Lucas Lovren/Klavan would be very solid and allow fb’s to bomb on in support.
Gomez too should come good and is only going to strengthen the defence when he returns even if he finds himself a lb contender!

I actually find Lovren very safe right now, his distribution is usually short, he lays it off for a midfielder or out to the flanks.

Matip is though a way better passer of the ball than the rest of them, he also can drive the ball up himself. He got a good range of passing and is not afraid to pick a high pass.

Sakho is the closest one that comes to him in terms of a passing range in my view, I got hopes for Gomez. Even though he is a lot more like Matip.

If Sakho can get fit and resolve any issues he has then he has to be considered ahead of Klavan or Lucas at the very least.

In the one game that I have seen Klavan I think he needs some work and I’d hate to see what some would say about Sakho if he’d made a mistake like Lucas did. I’d want to see Lucas there for many games before making such a judgement

Matip seems to be a calm enough bloke but if anyone can rattle you , it’s Costa. Huge test for him on Friday. Costa is on fire. No one should rise to cost as bait on Friday. We need to stay really calm. No silly bookings or sending offs

Sean, hopefully if Costa is in the wrong, the ref actually has a pair of balls big enough to send him off. He’s got away with it up to now. It’s crazy how he gets away with so much. Then Conte’s talking about that he needs protection because he’s ‘targeted’. The reason for that is that everyone knows what a nasty piece of work he is,so opposition players will try to give him a taste of his own medicine. My heart bleeds for him that he’s ‘targeted’,it really does. I remember he stood on Skrtel and Can’s ankles in the same game, and didn’t get sent off. He also nearly came to blows with Steven Gerrard.

It’s not Costa that needs protecting. It’s everybody else

On the Matip thread, I think he looks great, composed on the ball, great positional sense and makes good decisions, the time to tell will be when he makes his fist mistake, everybody makes them, even the greats, we as fans just don’t need to get on their backs when they happen. As many pundits have said over the weekend, if you play they way Klopp wants us to play (or even Pep at City) then now and then you are going to make mistakes that cost you a goal, but these coaches believe that this style of play will reap more goals than it costs.

Lucas mistake was very much like Gerrard’s in the Chelsea game that cost us the title, he was looking up at where to pass it when receiving the ball the ball, this resulted in a poor touch, and the mistake came about because of that poor touch.

ST – On the Costa debate, I completely agree with you, until the last game, not sure if Conte has had a word with him, but he was extremely well behaved in the face of extreme provocation, it is on the back of this game that Conte has called for protection, I think maybe this was a ploy, get him to behave for one game, call for protection and then let him go back to his normal self, with the call for protection playing in the refs mind.

Nice of you to imply that Lucas is a great Paxman!

Joel Matip seems to have his head screwed on and plenty of talent to go with it, I predict a bright future for him. I don’t think anyone would ruffle this guy, very calm and composed player.

As for who should partner him… I’d like to see more of Klavan, he could potentially be the man for the job.

NB – Spot on, same sort of build, ball playing centre half, he reminds me of a young Rio, let’s hope he not the same sort of twat 🙂

RedRob – Sorry mate, where did I ever imply Lucas was a great? Good solid player for us, but that is it. I know it was late at night but were all the words in my post jumbled up in you eyes, because that would explain a lot, too many Stella’s? 🙂

JC – Not sure about Klavan, looked good in pre season albeit against lower league opposition and a very rusty and under strength Barca, that got him his start in the Prem, but looked all at sea in the Arsenal game, and his two mistakes in the Burnley game gave them their two goals, he was bought as cover and that is where I think he will stay. Lovren has come on a lot since Klopp game in and I think that is his first choice pairing.

If we get Karius on board, then we could potentially forge a solid back 4 with Clyne, Matip, Lovren, and ‘A’ left back. Don’t quite know who that is for us. Speaking of which, what’s happened to that Grujic guy that scored for us in pre-season?

Nil – Can only think that Klopp doesn’t think Grujic is ready for the first team yet, he looked good in pre season, but we all know the difference between pre season and the Prem. He has been on the bench, but hasn’t got on yet. I would also like to see Karius given a chance, he was voted second best keeper in Germany last season, and lets face it Neuer was always going to be first.

Pax, agree mate. Karius, Matip and Lovren will work really well together. That part I’m confident with. Clyne is okay, so it’s just the left-back that obviously we need to address.

I’m sure Klopp will get there and don’t forget mate, this is his first full season.

    Cheers

Nil – I agree, left back is an issue, if only Moreno could sort out his mistakes, and not dive into tackles in the box he would be okay, I don’t like Milner there, I think we often lose forward momentum with him cutting back onto his right foot so often, there still doesn’t seem to be a return date for Gomez yet, and even when fit it will take a few games in the reserves to get back to match fitness, it is what it is, we have these players till January, I have a sneaky feeling we will see Moreno back in soon, I doubt for the Chelsea match, but probably soon after.

Pax, I’m afraid that’s not likely to happen anytime soon. Moreno is no John Arne Risse because he’s just far too focused on going forward, but very rarely considers other team members on the pitch such as the defensive unit.

He leaves his area unattended, and as a result, the defense is stretched. The problem with James Milner is that he is on the wrong side of his 20s and he’s right-footed, otherwise, the common sense of this fella is there and he’s not shy in hitting the ball into row Z. We need that type of no-nonsense full-back.
