I’ve time and again questioned whether he’s worth the overall package, and it is exactly games like today that prove he isn’t.A wonderfully talented player but someone who mostly only performs against mid-table sides.I think in the time he’s been here,he must have given 5 in 30 good performances against the bigger sides.
Honestly,I don’t question his ability but the guy isn’t the right player for this current manager.I’ve said it time and again,he needs to play in a team who actually knows how to hold posession well and are confident on the ball and don’t lose it every single time the pressure is on.Because let me tell you,if you’re playing against a team that you expect to dominate you then ozil is as good as useless. His strengths are on the ball. But even so,if you’re playing him in a big game don’t put him outwide. He offers nothing defensively, play him through the centre where he can connect the dots.

The whole system is wrong for him.I saw the team sheet and straight away knew we wouldn’t be an attacking threat.Miki and ozil are similar as well, they have a similar thinking pattern from what I notice and neither really strike fear into opponents which explains why auba was our only real threat if anything.

he isnt worth 300k a week but in all honesty no player is! he is getting paid the going rate for a player with his ability.

Ozil in teh reverse fixture was instrumental in our win, he was played through teh centre. Yesterday he was deployed wide right, yes i know he can ghost inside but he was restricted. that cannot go unsaid.
Ozil is teh right player if you set up teh team in a fashion that allows him to showcase his talents. We dont have a holding midfielder, we dont have a strong defence, what we have is mustafi, kos and xhaka.
We set up in a negative fashion, even in teh press conferences wenger was putting too much pressure on not losing. We all know that so there was no need to do so, he then set a team up that just couldnt handle the game. First half was as equal as it could get, bth teams created chances butwhat happened after the break was unforgivable from certain players. Xhaka, Kos, Mustafi, Monreal, Miki, Auba, Lacazette and fucking Iwobi were all poor really really poor. Xhaka and Iwobi are 2 of teh worst players i seen for us. neither offer anything, they both lose the ball get caught in possesion, cant track back, cant carry the ball, they are championship players at best. Only Cech Bellerin and Wilshere can take any sort of credit from yesterdays game.

Yet another game which just goes to show what a poor decision it was to put him on 300k which is an obscene amount of money.Listen the facts are this that he’s a wonderfully talented player but he’s not a difference maker. It dosen’t matter if the players around you are not performing well.If your being paid 300k a week,it is because of you ability to perform when the rest of the team aren’t.And he simply dosen’t have that ability,he’d be perfect for a barcelona, man city or real madrid but not for us.We simply don’t dominate enough so that he can be effective.
Add to that,I know from inside he’s a winner but his attitude and body language stinks.Definitely not a leader, and definitely not a difference maker when it most matters.

This is just another case of walcott, because you have another player who should be at the club but not for that obscene salary.Theo should never have gotten 140k and Ozil should never have gotten 300k.

So if he played for Barcelona or Madrid he’d be worth the 300k a week?
I’m struggling to see what your getting at with that.
The team needs to be built around ozil, give him the platform to perform. It makes a huge difference. We would make Messi look average And that’s not because of Messi that’s just because of Wenger and the lack of protection and tactics deployed by Wenger.
as I said before no person, footballer or not is worth 300k a week it’s obscene amount money. whether you like it or not ozil is a class player, he is up there with best number 10’s in world football. You don’t get Ronaldo saying he is best player he has played with for no reason!
He gets paid the going rate. No player in world could make the difference for us, we are just that badly managed

WE have built the team around ozil. It’s not working.I mentioned Barcelona/Man city because they are clubs that don’t pretend,if they want to keep more posession than the other team, any team they will. They have a plan and a philopsiphy and they follow it very well and Ozil would do well.Even though his stats are better here he still was a better player at madrid. But that’s besides the point I’m making here, the point I’m making is no matter what team ozil played for he still wouldn’t be worth 300k even at the going rate. Why?Not because he’s not talented but because he can’t make the difference. He can’t perform, when other aren’t.He can’t score a goal out of nowhere(goals win you games) and he certainly is the best passer around. He “needs” to rely on others. As for his passing,Cazorla is a better and much direct passer than him.Ozil’s intelligence and reading of the game is fantastic but that’s about it.Also,I couldn’t care less how much distance ozil covers but if he’s not making use of that energy it’s of no use.He dosen’t press players at all.So basically he’s playing in a team that don’t know how to keep posession well,so our plan B is to press and let them have more of the posession but when that happens we’re basically playing with a man down.

Players like sanchez and debruyne they’d be worth 300k because they can make the difference but not ozil.

Wow wow wow ‘we have built the team around Ozil’ seriously TSO thats a one for teh scrap book.
At no point have we built a team around Ozil, not even slightly.
Of course he was better at Madrid he was surrounded by better players. He has to work with Xhaka, Iwobi, Welbeck, Mustafi, Bellerin, Kolasinac and co. its the same for any player. You wouldnt see Messi doing what he has done for years at Eibar or Valencia. there has only been one player ever thats been able to do that and that was Maradona (whole other debate).
300k is teh going rate these days for someone of his ability and stature. i dont agree with it at all, i think its obscene amount of money but it is the going rate. in 2 years we will see more players earning that amount. more average players earning that.

Obviously he needs to be surrounded by better players to show off his skills, that’s understood. However, if he’s just been handed a huge contract that makes him the second highest earner in the Premiership, then I expect this lazy, uncommitted, flat track bully to not be shoved off the ball by weaklings or at least try, especially given his regular winter breaks provided by his manager. His performances in the past two games characterise his behaviour over the past four seasons. When the going gets tough, he disappears. He needs to be dropped. That would give him a wake-up call in World Cup Year, which was the only reason he joined us initially anyway. Who else was after him when Real decided to dispense with his services?

Andy – When you had Giroud upfront(although a fantastically commited striker that added another dimension to our team),then you could complain because there was no one to make the runs for ozil to feed the balls etc.I wouldn’t hear the end of it,of how we are desperately lacking a striker for ozil.Yet When lacazette came, nothing changed.he’d been the same.Ozil has played with the likes lacazette, sanchez, auba, ramsey, wilshere etc the list goes on.You can’t say they are not quality players. He’s had a good team to play with, not as good as he had with madrid but still a good team. He’s never really shown he can be the difference maker. We have to wait for him to show up,we don’t know when he’s going to show up.he showed up when he was fighting for his contract but after he got the 300k he’s been anonymous.

Him and sanchez were in the exact same position, yet is there any wonder why certain clubs were desperately in for sanchez and even bag him before they could get him for free, yet for ozil no one was in for him.Even if anyone wanted him after his contract was up,the’d never have paid him 300k a week.

You need to stop showing him favouritism, the whole point of this thread is he is not worth the buck we are paying for him week in week out.

This is a strange one, when we played at The Emirates Ozil looked brilliant and I thought here was a Arsenal player who at last looks like the player he was at RM.
Sadly for Arsenal fans and manager that now seems a one off, god given talent but lazy and couldn’t care less for his £300k .

TSO -The team has not, is not and probably wont be set up around Ozil. The team going forward suits Ozil when he is played centrally but for whatever reason he keeps getting shafted out to the wider positions. last 3 games are evidence for that. This in its own right makes ozil look lazy as he isnt the sort to track back and honestly i dont want him tracking back. You want players behind him that can sure up midfield. Pires and Bergkamp were both incredibly lazy players, yet we have players behind them that sured up the midfield and allowed them to express.
This is what we lack. instead we have complete dross like Xhaka supporting the front line not suring up the midifeld. Add to that 2 full backs who cant defend and it just highlights ozil’s inabilities rather than his abilities.
Yes he does get pushed off teh ball easily, and he does jog back. His job isnt to defend and its not his fault thats the case that solely sits with Wenger for not signing players to compliment our forward lines.

Disagree completely with the above. When Ozil was still trying to catch the eye of other clubs and/ or playing for a new contract, how come he was committed for those few months? The same dross was there as it is now, but even in the home loss against United, when we had that appalling start, he still knuckled down and drove us forward as he had an incentive to do so. Now, he’s suckered Wenger into paying him a basic wage of £18m a year, he’s back to his old, couldn’t-care-less habits that we’ve seen for much of his time here, especially when we go behind.

And was Xhaka worth the money paid for him and whatever his wages are? In a position where we probably need more than over Mesut as we’ve been missing this position for years. Dig out Mesut, fine – but dig everyone else out too. It’s been poor from the back to the front. Wenger cannot stay simply because the damage he’s done it’s irreversible to himself. He’s never gonna admit he made bad signings and ship our players like Xhaka etc. However, it’s illogical to think you sack players before managers. You don’t just sack a team of 11, the manager has to and does go first. The new manager will have to slowly get rid of the dead wood or should I say rotten.

Jeff is right, Ozil’s agent touted him around Europe for 18months and no one was remotely interested. Wenger out of desperation wanted him to stay bearing in mind Sanchez was leaving. So Ozil turns in a few decent performances where he actually tried, Arsenal offered him far more than he is worth so the mercenary signs a new deal on £350,000 per week. Since then he’s played like a drain, no need to try any more. In the meantime the one player who really cares Jack Wilshere gets an insulting offer and may leave. Jack puts more in every time he plays than GoogleEye ever has.

bsm walk, I maintained from Day One that Xhaka would be a disaster and Ive been proved right. He is quite frankly one of the poorest players to have played for the club in the last 30years.

You and me both oracle, what baffled me was we bought Xhaka for 37 mil instead of Wanyama for 13 million. It’s incredible, Wanyama prem and cl experience a proper meaty holding midfielder and we pass it up!
Bsm – agree wholeheartedly with what you said.

Just look at you guys, trying to deflect attention from Ozil and putting it on xhaka.
I’m not surprised at all, people on here havent rated many players in the past namely the likes of ramsey who have gone on and proved you wrong and have changed your opinion about him.You know it’s all subjective about xhaka,no one is really ready to put facts in front.
STATS don’t tell the full story agree, but they say atleast half the story.Granit xhaka has made the second most number of passes in the PL this season, ahead of the likes of de bruyne, silva, fernandinho.Mind you considering that he is one of those players who tries to make the risky passes(unlike most of the team),which is why he ends up making the mistakes he does at the expense of himself. So you know for a fact,he dosen’t hide.Add to that he’s made the most number of tackles in an Arsenal shirt. Two of these stats, are more or less the most essential stats you require from a midfielder. He is also rated at 6.92 by whoscored. It’s not good but it’s above half the Arsenal squad.Whether he is good enough?Whether the manager is not getting the best out of him?All that is a seperate debate.BUT HE QUITE POSSIBLY COULDN’T BE ONE OF THE POOREST SIGNINGS WE’VE EVER MADE .I mean what are you guys backing up your argument with? The fact that you hate the player from day one?And ever since then it only goes downwards for him.Is it any wonder why xhaka always performs for switzerland, one of their best players. The logic of argument for and against xhaka is ridiculius because one argument is with substance and another is without any substance whatsoever.

I’ve said it time and again with the fans, and one of the most ridiculous things is the favouritism they show towards players.Players like Giroud and xhaka, people don’t like them so they’ll get criticised every game. But players like ozil and lacazette, people like them so they’ll get away with anything.

Anyways, this is not about xhaka. How much xhaka was bought for,how much he’s being paid. This is about a player who’s played well until he’s gotten an obscene salary of 300k per week, the highest we’ve had.And how he simply isn’t worth that buck on the whole.

AndyC, spot on regarding the useless Xhaka and much better and cheaper options on our doorstep, but not only Wanyama, what about Kante? Borussia Mönchengladbach must be laughing their socks of at Arsenal paying £34m for this clodhopper. When we signed him I said at the time he was far too slow to play in the PL, one of the usual clowns claimed we had to fight off Bayern to get him!!!! Yeah right, you cant make that level of stupidity up if you tried. Similar with Kolasinac, people tried to tell me he was the best left back in the Bundesliga, hilarious, he’s awful. Wenger has wasted hundreds of millions on dross in the last few years and its scandalous.

TSO- your stats are meaningless. As I have said previously, Denilson’s stats were good, but he passed it sideways and backwards for around a metre per pass. Also he could not keep up with a middle-aged ref on one occasion. Only you and Wenger rate Xhaka, the rest of the world knows what he is- hopeless and should not be in the Premiership. Switches off, can’t tackle, cannot track back, loses his man and that is one of the key factors in why the defence is exposed. As for Ramsey, this glory-seeking “I want £200K” can bugger off as far as I am concerned. I have seen the lack of discipline for years in his play. He’s neither creative enough as an advanced midfielder, not good enough as a defensive midfielder, as he always charges forward and, as usual on Thursday, then jogged back when he left gaps. He plays for himself and not the team.

Jeff – You’re basically making me repeat myself.Stats are never meaningless, they might not tell the full story but they certainly mean something. If denilson made the most number of passes it dosen’t make him the best midfielder out there but he was certainly useful and not useless. And for goodness sake, are you really trying to say that xhaka only passes sideways and backwards?Utter nonsense. He’s one of the only oe amongst the back that tries risky passes at the expense of making himself not look good. You say he can’t tackle?Yet I contradicted your point by saying he’s made the most number of tackles in an Arsenal shirt this season.
What you’re giving out is your opinion. Not that I do(Obvious reasons),but IF i had an opinion that messi is an average player, what would I back it up with. All stats would contradict me.
You simply can’t say stats are not meaningless.
it’s become increasingly evident that certain people on here hate xhaka. No matter what he does, even if he has a good game people will call him out.Once a scapegoat, always a scapegoat. As has always been the case amongst Arsneal fans.

TSO, I won’t bother anymore on this point as I know you will carry on. But I repeat you and only you rate Xhaka, Sorry, also Wenger, who cannot admit he made a huge mistake with him that’s cost us £35m and how many goals that he’s not covered the man he was supposed to be marking this season? At least 7 or 8, the most recent being Swansea and Bournemouth. You do seem to have a habit of championing average players or ones that should not be first choice though don’t you and that sets you apart from everyone else on here. Walcott, Coquelin, Xhaka, Giroud, Mustafi and Ramsey. Enough said.

Jeff, youre wasting your time with this clown. Whenever someone starts quoting stats I know Im dealing with a moron, usually a know nothing Football Manager kids or a Yank. Quoting the number of passes is laughable when they are virtually all sideways backwards or go straight out of play. What about missed tackles, not tracking back, not marking tightly, jogging instead of running, being caught in possession, poor control, lack of concentration, lack of effort. Anyone who has watched football for any length of time, has played it and has a positive IQ should be capable of assessing a player from closely watching them. I dont need meaningless stats to tell me Xhaka is useless, a total waste of £34million, this tortoise isnt even Championship standard. Wenger was quick to drop Kolasinac and Lacazette why this fool manages to get in the team is beyond me, I’d sooner see Elneny play, that shows how bad he is. Its going to take a new manager years to sort this mess out and personally I dont think its fixable.
