I know he had a good game on Saturday but too often in the big games he’s a passenger. I wonder if the speculation about him putting on an audition for potential clubs is true? He’s undoubtedly gifted but we’ve enough passengers in this squad already without adding one who wants to be paid in excess of £250k per week.

Thanks Redblood. Bale is a great player, but he’s said no to us on several occasions, I’d wonder what his motivation level would be like if Real Madrid didn’t want him anymore or he was coming for a pay day.

Ozil would be a bit of a punt, but he can’t have got to being one of the top players in the world by being lazy all the time. He’d be taking a step back up to the top level at United under Mourinho and would be motivated at the chance to get straight back in the Champions League at the knock-out stages.

Given he’d be available at cut price, if it didn’t work out we could probably get our money back on him in 2 years, given this fact alone it sounds like our board would buy him!

If Ozil is available in January amd we don’t snap him up, then I’m afraid heads need to roll. With our solid defensive base, a midfield of Pogba playing behind Ozil who will be playing beside Rashford and Martial behind Lukaku may just be the catalyst for a good finish to the season, and a solid base to build for the next season.

@O.T Fax Machine – With Woodward in charge I really have minimal faith in any good deals being done. In reality we should be going after Sanchez and giving him whatever he wants however I’d be very surprised if we got him whilst I’d also be surprised if we didn’t get our pants pulled down over an Ozil deal and end up paying something like 40m for a player whose contract expires in 6 months.

@yorkshireman – Good article, well written [thanks for telling us] but after reading I struggled to see the point. Yes there could be parallels with what happened at Disney but equally well there could be parallels with Tampa Bay or Arsenal or Liverpool.

And saying a CL win would go a long way to bringing glory and good times back to United is .. the bleedin obvious.

PS – Neville must be contender for prediction of the year, tipping a 3-3 draw when Liverpool were 3-0 up against Sevilla

If Ozil is willing to come to United then it’s a no-brainer for me, Ozil in and Mata out. Mkhitaryan might have to follow as well unless he is willing to play second string.

For me, Ozil is in the top 5 playmakers in world football but lacks motivation under Wenger – his ability to pick a pass is second to none. Mourinho knows how to get the best out of Ozil as well. The cherry on top is the fact that we would be taking another top player off Arsenal, directly weakening a rival.

Wouldn’t touch Ozil with a barge pole. Talented but another gutless lightweight who lacks leadership and character. We already have enough of them. He won’t improve us as keeping the likes of Young, Herrera, Mata, Fellaini etc. won’t either.

@yorkshireman. Did you see Ozil’s performance against Spurs last weekend?

I watched the whole game and I saw a man possessed, easily MoM performance. He won the ball back several times and he was the fulcrum of Arsenal’s attack. I believe he has lost motivation at Arsenal after realizing their board and manager have now real ambition and he simply needs belief that his team can win again. He continues to play at the highest level for Germany as well.

Mourinho substituted Ozil in every game he played because he understands his endurance levels as well.

For me, Ozil would be a magnificent signing assuming Mata is sold.

Ozil was very good against Spurs. He’s created the most chances over the last 3 years apparently. He’s just been made to look average and lazy in a shit arsenal team.

Hatters, that was his first decent game in 2 years. He’s not what we need imo. Wouldn’t want him next to me in the trenches!!

The problem with Ozil, and the problem Jose had with him in Madrid (where they almost came to blows) is that Ozil doesn’t expect to have to defend. He sees himself as a Messi type player who should be exempt from tackling and defending because he creates so much.
The situation that arises out of this is, can a team afford to carry a midfielder who doesn’t want to defend? Do you need to play two very defensive minded CM’s to cover for an offensive one who won’t track back?
If we sign Ozil as an offensive CM where does Pogba fit in? He’s a mostly offensive midfielder so do we shift Ozil out to the wing, where he doesn’t want to play? He doesn’t fit into the club as long as we have Pogba in my opinion so why bring him in? It’s the same reason Miki and Mata are playing on the wings instead of centrally where they should be. Pogba fills that role, we need out and out wingers not another ‘No. 10’ or attacking CM that’s going to be pissed off because Pogba is actually playing in their position.

Most games Pogba and Matic would be enough defensively. Problem is when playing against possession teams like Barca/Man City, or just good teams like Madrid/PSG you cannot have ANY passengers. At 29 Ozil isn’t gonna be changing his game. A deeper playmaker like Verratti would be ideal

@killyboye… I think that’s exactly the mentality that’s keeping England behind other international teams. Football is a team sport YES, but with players selected to perform certain roles within the team. You cannot expect a Bailly to attack as well as defend, now how can one expect their chief playmaker to do defensive work as well? Why have a sitting defensive midfielder and box to box midfielder if you will expect your number 10 do both create and do the donkey work?
Neymar never ever tracked back at Barca, doesn’t do it for Brazil yet they hardly get pasted massive scores (Except the German WC game). Ozil doesn’t defend for Germany and they play a 4-2-3-1 yet they are by far the best team in Europe. We need to stop expecting attack minded players to be burdened with defensive duties when there are players picked to do just that. Yes they should close down their immediate opponent but other that, let them do what they do best, and that is causing damage to the opposition. No one blasts Koscielny for not scoring as many goals, initiating goal scoring opportunities, yet a number 10 is slaughtered for not defending? Wow owk….

you should check Ozils stats over his time with us, his work rate is far far better than most believe, he covers a lot of ground is consistently up there for distance covered in a match but i would agree with OT, I never wanted Henry or Bergkamp or Wrighty to track back, i wanted them to be where they would play best and win us games

French media report that Fellaini will join PSG in January. In the light of Neymar’s apparent unhappiness in Paris, a swap deal seems likely !

I think, ultimately it’s about getting the balance right across the squad.

We have a lot of players that can only defend or are assigned defensive roles within the team. If Pogba is out, we are slow through the middle, lack creativity, can’t pick a final pass and can’t cross. It’s looks like we’re controlling games but the reality is we’re waiting for mistakes most the time or trying to use our height at set pieces.

Ozil is a player who with the opposition pinned back, will create chance after chance. We need to address the balance of the team from needing to be over defensive and relying on mistakes to being able to blow most teams away by having too much quality on the pitch.

If there’s a team with more quality than us, we might need to change tactics based on the players we have, but in reality there should only be a few teams in Europe that Man Utd need to do that against.

If Ozil coming in meant the end of Mata and Mikhi, then I think Jose should go for it.But even then @ his age,he will be a short-term solution only, like RVP again!
