Everybody thought, myself included, that he’d be out of the door when Mourinho was appointed. I’m glad he’s become a regular under Mourinho and proved his worth. Mata is one of the most technically gifted players in the league… the first touch is absolutely insane.. I rate Mata a lot higher than most No. 10s in the league. He’s getting more goals than any players in those positions, only Silva has more assists. Can we dispel this myth of Mata having no pace? It gets on my damn nerves when I hear/see people say that. Yes he’s not the fastest but he’s no snail either. Juan Mata is a great player for man Utd and deserves more credit.

@TMA – Something is only a “myth” when it isn’t true and as far as Mata is concerned even he himself would openly admit he has about as much pace as a ruptured duck. The key to getting the best out of him is to get pacey players in and around him in the team and as a direct result of Carrick and Rooney being dropped leaving Zlatan as our only real slowcoach Jose is well on the way to doing it now, simple as that.

@blacky – People think he’s not a Manchester United player because he’s got no pace. Who said players should have Cheetah pace to succeed in the PL. Does David Silva have pace? Ozil?? Juan Mata was Chelsea poty for 2 seasons with out “pace”, banged in 20 goals + 20 assists in each season. I’ll tell you what EVERY Chelsea fan thinks of him in one sentence. Can we have him back?

Yeah I like players with high pace but Mata is doing more than players with pace in our team (Rashford, Martial). Mata is a top talent and key member of our squad as far as I’m concerned.

Underrated by some, overrated by others. Isn’t that true of all players?

Mata is quality especially when you play him with the likes of ibra and mikhitaryan.

Thing is mata hasn’t got pace and doesn’t get stuck in which generally means he’s not appreciated by people in England. In England generally if your not tall and have no pace you’re considered not good enough.

If we had xavi or inesta they too would be ripped to shreds by some fans because of thier lack of pace.

@jm1502 – Yes, some players are overhyped and others undermined. But Juan Mata criticism on this forum is very unfair and your one of his loudest critic. It’s actually a myth because he has done reasonably well since he joined the club.

I thought Blacky had explained the meaning of the word ‘myth’ to you. Apparently not. Anyway, my criticism of Mata is my right isn’t it? You know, opinion, freedom of speech and all that. You’ll also find, if you read my posts properly, that I also give him credit when it’s due. Should he be in the current side? Probably but dependent on the opposition. Would I buy him if we didn’t already have him? Absolutely not.

JM – But he’s scored and assisted more goals than any other midfielder in the premier league since 2011. Why wouldn’t you sign him if he wasn’t a united player? Are you only interested in midfielders who don’t create or score goals?

Happy I didn’t know that stat about mata. Just emphasises his quality. Sadly not appreciated by all fans

Guess fans just prefer a Roy Keane or Paul ince type player who would run around getting stuck into the opponents

Off course it’s a forum and we have right to express our opinion. We also have the right to throw a tantrum when someone challenge our unfair assessment. Juan Mata is a key player at Manchester United.

I know you don’t like stats but here is one to mull over. In 43 appearances against the ‘big 6’, Mata has 13 goals and 10 assists. A figure that makes him the most influential no.10 in big games in the Premier League.

I think it’s safe to assume that Mata will get and sign a new contract and I don’t have a problem with that. With an even stronger midfield base behind the likes of himself,Mkytarian and Pogba next season I expect really good things to happen.

Of course I’m interested in players who create and score goals. He’s just not my type of player happy. I’ve no problem with his technical ability, it’s his lack of pace and athleticism that I don’t like. If I was signing ANY player in any outfield position, I’d be looking for ability, of course, but also pace and athleticism. That doesn’t mean to say I’d get that every time, but that’s what I’d be after. I mean, not every player’s going to be electric but Juan’s as slow as fuck mate.

I’d pick technicality over pace and athletism any time any day though, just saying. It’s the exact same reason England has been shite these past years. Yep they’re athletic buh have they got any football brains? Buh to have the perfect mix of technicality, pace and athletism, that era’s long gone sadly. There are very very few players they’ve got that presently. Who remembers Athletic Bilbao vs Manchester United? La liga sides are quite technical and they almost always whip epl sides.
Anyways, yesterday’s game just highlighted sth, we need a clinical number 9! I’m tired of hearing ball-playing 9’s. Just put the round object at the back of the net.

JM – Fair enough mate. But as we’ve agreed before, pace isn’t everything. Otherwise Sterling, Walcott, Musa, Gray and Navas would be the best players in the world. They’re not. Whilst Mata won’t sprint past a full back on the wing what he can do is flick the ball back to Miki, get into the box ahead of his marker, and slide the ball home. Intelligence makes up for pace.
Gotta be said that this united team are looking good at the moment, obviously should be scoring more goals. But we’re creating the chances so it will click into place in that final third sooner or later.

Mata is quality, those who bang on about pace players such as depay obertan Zaha bebe. You like pace

    #1434481

Mata has excellent technique and vision – very much a similar player to Silva and Ozil. Unfortunately though, if you’re going to play out on the flanks you need pace, speed and strength to be effective (ability to get down the line, beat a man and get crosses in) and, unfortunately, Mata doesn’t have any of those.

Basically, in my opinion, Mata needs to play in the No.10 role where he can provide the passes for Ibrahimovic, Martial and Mhkitaryan (as well as Pogba and Herrera) and pop up with the odd goal that he enjoys doing. I think playing in the centre also gives him a lot more confidence as I can nearly always see a difference in his performance levels compared to when he’s forced to play RM.

No, pace isn’t everything mate. But I think I said I’d be looking for ability, obviously, although I don’t think Olan picked up on that, with pace and athleticism if I could get it.

There are players having both pace and technique like Mané. Thats the players we want,at least at right wing. Never heard of a slow winger before,at least not an orthodox winger.
To Matas defence,he is not an orthodox winger but his technique and his intelligence saves him when he cuts in from the right. A bit predictable as he always cuts in but he Miki and Zlatan have a good understanding how to play together which we saw in last game. But as i said in the Watford thread, the key was having Pogba further back and let Zlatan drop to collect the ball and feed Martial,Miki and mata with very neat passes. Thats a strength we should keep playing.

Zico – Yep, agreed. I don’t like Pogba as a number 10. He’s much better at getting the ball a bit deeper and driving forwards. Herrera looks like a good partner for him in the middle which probably spells the end for Carrick, fair enough he’s gotta be replaced at some stage. With Pogba part of a midfield 2 it frees up the No. 10 slot for a more natural fit like Mata or Miki. Exciting times!
