is reportedly the signing Klopp wanted this window, but Lever refused to sell. Obviously needed as our goals have dried up, but a still surprise given the lack of cover we have in defence for Sakho. I won’t complain if Van Dijk arrives with Brandt in the summer, but we will probably need 4th. or 5th & Europe next to make it happen.
February 10, 2017 at 8:27 pm #1433163I’m gonna try and watch Leverkusen this weekend, I think they play before us (I think I saw 12 or 2 something). I don’t buy the talk that leverkusen just wouldn’t sell is something I don’t believe. If we had made an ambitious bid to get him, why were the bids kept so secret? it would only look good for us fans to see the numerous bids going in at least but there werent any and thats why we heard almost nothing about it.
Leverkusen signed is replacement during that window, so more evidence for me to suggest that FSG werent that enthusiastic, along with the actual language that Klopp was using. .
They better show some bloody ambition in the next window.
I see us going for him in the summer though, otherwise I wouldnt be trying to catch full matches with him in them (I typically only watch Liverpool these days), there will be more interest in him from other clubs though as his price goes further down.
I’ve been really impressed with what I’ve seen from him and think he’s the one player we should have signed in January, could have given everyone a boost initially but then also given our attack some OOpm when we desperately needed it.
February 10, 2017 at 9:00 pm #1433173It might be that FSG could get him cheaper in the summer so werent that persistent, but it’s also likely that Lever are pushing for CL & would miss his goals. Either way, it could still end up another Konoplyanka situation. ie/ The summer arrives & he goes somewhere else. We have to land our targets to win silverware again. Too many times now we settle on players that will fit in, but not have something more about them. We need a Torres/ Stevie/ Suarez type in there. We dont have that & it shows.
February 11, 2017 at 10:10 am #1433284Sanj1 agree on that last point fella.
February 11, 2017 at 10:19 am #1433288I see Mr.Kane, has said now is the time to finish off Liverpool’s challenge!!!!Oh for the likes of Tommy Smith back in our dressing room! What would he have replied*****************? Surely this must act as a ‘SPUR’ to our lads!
February 11, 2017 at 10:31 am #1433293FSG cannot be blamed regarding transfers, they have always provided funds to buy our targets -such as 34m for Mane or 25m for Wijnaldum
And I fully support then in not paying over the odds for overhyped players like Teixeira who thankfully did not join Liverpool.
Fans need to realise that you just cannot get evry player you want, there are varoous reasons why a player chooses one club over another. So no point just blaming your club if they cannot sign a certain player – e,g. Brandt may only want to move in summer
Ultimately the main issue is who are Klopp’s targets. Hopefully he is targeting top strikers like Aubameyang and Dembele, plus top players for our weak positions like goalkeeper and defensive midfielder
February 11, 2017 at 1:51 pm #1433400Well Leverkusen play at 2:30 V frankfurt if people want to watch the guy that Chelsea come in and sign from under our noses.
February 11, 2017 at 1:55 pm #1433405and that is a good post Songman but I still don’t buy that no players were available in Jan. What you say might be true of an individual and ya, we cant have everyone but 1-2 quality players in January would probably have stopped our wheels coming off, at least in such spectacular fashion.
Ya we can’t have it all in one window. We did ok last summer even if we were very prudent. It was still a good window as you said Songman. It would have been smart to add one quality player in january though. we’re going to have a hard time getting the players we need in next summers window if we have no CL football to boost the coffers and of course to have in general.
February 11, 2017 at 2:02 pm #1433409There the risk again mak. We move too slow & our target is lost. Delle Alli could haunt us today, brandt could go elsewhere, but perhaps Williams we do bag in the summer & but this last window Ashley would have been more important than inaki. Cheers ☺
February 11, 2017 at 2:29 pm #1433441Allardyce almost signed lewandowski for Blackburn in 2010. Holy Venkys! We were busy easing Rafa out bringing Roy in & changing hands from h&g to nesv. The botched sale really did put us back years. FSG may have felt after the FA Cup final defeat that life under Dalglish was a false start, but history will look at his second tenure a little more kindly now. Given where we were at before & after, two cup finals in one season was a terrific achievement for any manager. Kenny’s success from before his 2nd tenure became his yardstick for instant success. Another season with him & who knows the title might have arrived. Brendan got close & working wonders in Scotland. Jurgen trod water last season & has a huge task now. Galvanising the team that has imploded halfway in. The history is firmly that, history. We cannot dominate anymore, that’s a dim memory from a wonderful time, but we can grow & improve. Its all new beginnings now & it starts again today. Come on the redmen ynwa
February 11, 2017 at 2:49 pm #1433470Mr Mak, the players Klopp wanted were not available in Jan, he’ll get them in summer. In fact this Jan transfer window was unbelievably quiet for the big clubs.
Sanj, I totally disagree that Liverpool move too slow, according to who? We missed out on Alli, but which club does not miss out on underrated players who later become big.
We certainly moved super fast on Sterling for only about £0.6m (initially) and sold him for 49m. Not forgetting Suarez, Torres, Alonso, Mascherano, Coutinho, Mane etc all top players whose stature and value was/has been greatly enhanced by being at Liverpool
February 11, 2017 at 4:06 pm #1433534Songman, the other big clubs all have decent squads. We are paper thin and it’s been a problem all through the window. it will continue to be a problem unless we’re lucky too. I don’t buy that the players we needed weren’t available. Everyones available, Brandt’s replacement is already playing for leverkusen.
As for this talk of us needing a Torres etc. . Where is this player? He’d been to be absolutely amazing to not have to play our pressing game. I cant see Torres doing that, i cant see Fowler doing it. Suarez I can see doing it but where is another Suarez?
February 11, 2017 at 4:06 pm #1433535This team really needs a Zidane or a Batistuta. Brazilian Ronaldo would be great for us.
…February 11, 2017 at 5:33 pm #1433628Mr Mak you misunderstood the example I gave about Suarez, Torres etc.
I gave these players as an example of superstar players that Liverpool have moved fast to sign ahead of other clubs, since it was stated that Liverpool are slow in transfer dealings.
I did not say these are the types of players we need right now, my thoughts on who we need (or what type of player we need) have already been highlighted earlier in this thread
February 18, 2017 at 10:08 am #1437062More info coming out that Brandt is one of our top targets for the summer.
He isn’t the first left winger we’ve been looking at so im wondering what are the future plans for Coutinho?
Clearly he’s not going anywhere so does this mean he’s being moved to no10?
Then where does Lallana fit in?
Is there a formation change being planned?February 18, 2017 at 1:04 pm #1437111Were Torres and Suarez Superstar players when Liverpool signed them? I’m not sure they were.
Torres cost Liverpool circa £20m and Suarez £23m both turned into superstar players at Liverpool though.
February 18, 2017 at 6:57 pm #1437245Nine, Suarez certainly wasn’t a superstar when we signed him. I actually didn’t know who was until we were heavily linked with him but as for Torres, he was a massive star in name even if he had yet to really reach the top level in terms of output.
February 18, 2017 at 6:59 pm #1437246Ginger – All good questions, where does Coutinho go? I like to think of it more in terms of adding quality beyond our first 11 , who could very well push for a place there. That’s the attitude that we have to have moving forward but ya, a change of formation could also be in there for us, Klopp hasnt always used a 433. I think he works the best with what he has and in time maybe he will mold something better.
February 18, 2017 at 8:34 pm #1437281According to Brendan Rogers he was warned off buying Virgil Van Dijk by LFC’s scouting system…to me that equates to moving too slow Songman as he went to other premiership clubs to prove himself.
Where did Sami Hyppia come from, for how much & what did he do for LFC ? We move too slow in the market now.
February 18, 2017 at 8:39 pm #1437282May 1999, Hyypiä signed for Liverpool for £2.6 million, recommended to former chief executive Peter Robinson by a TV cameraman (not a scout) Hyypiä was regarded as an unknown who would not live up to expectations… Sometimes a club of our size can take an educated guess about certain players & it can pay dividends on the pitch when we do. Cheers 🙂
