He came from Dutch club Willem II…Van Dijk was playing in the Dutch league when Brendan wanted him for LFC.

Mr Mak, Torres was well known and a full Spanish internstional when Liverpool signed him but he had only score over 20 goals once for Athletico.

I think it’s stretching it a bit to say he was a superstar when Liverpool signed him although he did become a superstar at Liverpool especially in that first season at Anfield

Sadly he was never the same player after his injuries at Liverpool and Chelsea should never have paid £50m for him but injury free and at his best especially in that first season at Liverpool even at £50m he would have been a bargain. Cheers 999

Morientes wasn’t a success & got homesick, leading to Rafa bringing in Torres who proved to be the right Fernando at the right time. Cheers 🙂

Ginger absolutely mate, it’s interesting what we are doing at the moment as Klopp is clearly talking about more quality rather than squad players. It makes me wonder about the likes of Lallana who he clearly rates and has now secured himself a mega deal and what his future will be.

I still maintain at some point I think Coutinho could drop back into a midfield role dictating play and allowing us to be more creative further back against Teams who park the bus. I know some would be against this but for me it could work.

    Agreed Bob.
I’d like to see someone with more pace and more direct on the left wing than Coutinho plus I believe Coutinho gifts would be better suited to a central position I think especially now that’s he’s matured a bit.

Nine, I know about his goal record before he signed for us. Goals scored isn’t how you measure someone’s profile in the sport though and for me Torres had a huge profile ever since he was a teenager. Utd (and apparently Chelsea) had failed in a bid to sign him at least once , a year before we did and the £22m that we paid for him was considered to be a steal as previous bids were for more, it broke our transfer record too so it wasn’t small money either.

Chelsea’s bid was apparently £28m, for an 18 year old striker who was named captain of his team before he hit 20.

Now, I don’t have a great memory but where I think a lot of the hype around Torres started was from his performances in Internationals at a youth level. he seemed to be the great white hope of the new generation for Spain.

Now, although I think he had an absolutely massive profile when we signed him, it is at Liverpool that he went from “world class potential” to “world class ability”, so I understand why you might say he wasn’t a superstar etc. . I even struggle with that actual term because it’s hard to pin down in a definition when you’re talking about something that isn’t exactly localised (club/world football).

The reason I’ve gone into all this is because when Torres is arguably the biggest name that Liverpool have signed in decades, at the time of their signing. Now I think people might strongly disagree with this but signing Torres was an incredibly exciting thing for me as a fan. I also remember Litmanen, another massive name even if he wasn’t exactly at his peak.

We should be able to check Julian Brandt out tonight in the CL, against a quality side too.

Pretty awesome, especially since we’ve got no matches ourselves.

Allegedly Juve are also tracking Brandt?

Seemingly there are numerous multiple clubs tracking numerous multiple players right the way across Europe currently Chelsea seem to be watching lots of players that lots of other clubs are also watching.

Ah ya I’m sure half the planet have an eye on Brandt, his profile may well be so high come summer that Liverpool might not be in the mix at all.

As things stand though tonight, he’s not exactly lighting it up here and Leverkusen are poor. loads of time though. .
