Having watched two very exciting FA Cup Semi Finals involving 4 of our best sides, both of which could both easily have gone the other way and then watching El Clasico I started to think about a comparison between the relative strengths of the two leagues. The days where the PL dominated the CL have long since gone, both Madrid sides are in one of the semi-finals and one of them may well win it again. Barca may not have made it but they do have the best player in the World in their side and once again he stole the show. The PL is a war of attrition, how would Spains best figure in it, how would our 4 FA Cup Semi-Finalists fair in La Liga. The only conclusion I could come to was that PL sides would achieve more in the CL with a winter break and yesterday (and Saturday) was great for football.

The current top premiership sides would get wasted by the top teams if they were in La Liga. However the La Liga teams would struggle in the premier league, it is much more competitive, physically tough, ultra fast paced, more games, and no winter break.

A PL relegation favourite has battered Sevilla and pushed Atletico all the way. The top 4 premier league teams would have no problem competing in La Liga.

You honestly think Chelsea and Spurs can compete with Real and Barca mate? The top four in England would struggle into 3rd and 4th in Spain. They got no chance at making 1st or 2nd… Its the strongest division in the world at the moment, the foundation were laid decades ago, right now the Premier League got the Bundesliga to watch out for and the Italian Serie A.

Yeah Barca and Real would be hard to shift, the others are nothing to shout about

If the league was combined, going on this seasons performances, I’d think we’d see a table like this:

    1. Real Madrid
    2. Barcelona
    3. Chelsea
    4. Athletico Madrid
    5. Tottenham
    6. Sevilla
    7. Man City
    8. Liverpool
    9. Man United
    10. Villareal

There is a significant gap between Spain’s Top Four teams and the rest at the moment (just like there used to be a gap between the Top Four in England and all the rest back between 2004 and 2009) however make no mistake, no English team will challenge for a title currently in a league that involves Real Madrid, Barcelona and Athletico Madrid. English teams may get a good result here and there in direct confrontations, but overall Spanish football levels are higher than England’s at the moment.

Please note that I still think that English football is far more entertaining to watch; I’d prefer watching Arsenal vs Liverpool than the Madrid derby for example.

I agree that Barca and Real are above anything we have at the minute and I would have Atletico in the mix for the top 4 in the PL but I think below that I think the average PL team is better than the average La Liga team.

Good post Shifters. I agree with those saying it would be a mix – Barca and Madrid would probably take the top 2 spots, followed by a mix of English and Spanish clubs but I reckon the bottom three would be all Spanish – there’s a much bigger quality gap between the top and bottom clubs in La Liga, than there is in the PL.

I reckon a few are over exaggerating the top teams in Spain now. We saw how easily City dispatched Barcelona earlier on in the season and how closely they matched them up until the sending off during the 1st game. With the exception of the front 3, I do not think this Barcelona side is anything special.

The relegation battle would actually be interesting, Sunderland and Boro have been pretty pathetic, if there are actually any worse team in the top divisions right now it might just be that those would be Granada and Osasuna.

I still doubt that more than one club from the Premier League could force its way into the top four in Spain. Atletico Madrid have had a few good years now, I think they would lead the assault for the Premier League title if they were based in England. Chelsea without european football might be able to go toe to toe with them.

I don’t get all this Chelsea won’t be able to cope with CL football and the PL next season firstly all of Chelsea’s previous PL titles have been achieved whilst competing in the CL often in the the very latter stages secondly the squad that Chelsea will compete with next season in both competition’s is likely to be strengthened in the summer.

I would fully expect Chelsea next season to be competitive in both the PL and the CL as they have been for the past 17 seasons bar last season.

they meant competing with Barca and Real in La Liga while also in CL, saying your lot might stand a chance if no European games also…..

999 I´m not saying Chelsea will not be able to cope with Champions League football next season.
You guys have benefitted from the lack of European football this season, there is no doubt about that, its not just the extra time you get to prepare on matches. It also had a effect on the players, they seem hungrier for success after the disappointment of the year before.

I actually think Spurs could also do well in La Liga, they would be a top six club over there.

I dont think Arsenal, Liverpool or the Manchester clubs would do any better than Valencia in Spain.

European football, the CL is different, very different from domestic football. Spanish football is less physical week in week out than PL football, the same could be said for Italian football. Another issue is there are a variety of styles in the PL, different formations, different strengths, different weaknesses. German club sides all tend to play the same way, so to Italian sides. Spanish sides have a wider ability range from the amazing talent of Real & Barca, the sheer obduracy of Athletico (plus they do have top players) down to Tony Adams new side and some of the other poor sides. The PL is a war of attrition but I feel reduce it to 16 clubs, have a winter break and PL sides would again dominate. To suggest that Arsenal, Liverpool, City, Utd would struggle in a combined league whilst Spurs would finish top6 is ludicrous based on Spurs efforts in the CL.

“I do not think this Barcelona side is anything special” I guess you didn’t watch El Classico then CM. 🙂

They might not be quite as special as they were but 2/3 key signings in the right positions in the summer and Barca will be right back at the very top of the tree again imo.

A poor season by the ridiculously high standards that they have set themselves but still in with a chance of a Spanish Double.

obviously Barcelona and Real would dominate the league however I am sure the next 10 or even 12 places would be occupied by EPL teams maybe with AM somewhere in between

Nobody has factored in that if Real and Barca were “based in England” they wouldnt be able to offer an attractive climate.

likewise if Man Utd and Chelsea were based in Sunny Spain they would be making stellar signings left right and centre

I think Barca and Real although very good teams are over hyped Slightly. Since 2000 barca have played chelsea 12 times in the champions league. Chelsea have won 4, barca won 3 and 5 draws.

With xavi, iniesta, ronaldo and messi’s careers all coming to an end in the not too distant future I can the see the gap getting even closer.

oh and messi has never scored against chelsea 🙂
