Well, we made it in typical Liverpool style, drama till the end. So happy that we are still in the conversation. Getting through is a big psychological boost.

I think these are the teams that we could face, someone let me know if I made a mistake:

    Basel 🇨🇭
    Bayern 🇩🇪
    Juventus 🇮🇹
    Porto 🇵🇹
    Real Madrid 🇪🇸
    Shakhtar 🇺🇦

Think you’ve got them all mate apart from maybe Porto who I believe topped their group which would leave Besiktas. People will hope for them or Basel but they won’t be easy ties either. Would probably want to avoid Real and Juve but as Klopp says he always gets Real. Did you see Naby’s goal for Leipzig? WOW

Theyre all tough teams. The least hardest maybe basel and porto?

Real are there for the taking right now. I’d love it if we drew them and gave them a real shelling. That would send the right message to everyone around Europe that we’re here and we mean business.

Well it is 50/50 if we get a game where we are favourites or one where we are underdogs, Basel, Porto, or Shakhtar will have us favourite, Juve, Real, Bayern has them as favourite. Would be lying if I said I wasn’t hoping for one of the first 3, but whatever just glad to be in after the Christmas break 🙂

Agree redsforever looks like he’s on his way. Not as big a disaster as it may seem though because good as he is we have coped without him and we should be able to fill the gap IF FSG allow Klopp to spend some or all of the money we get for him. Also on the plus side Naby comes in next season and he looks the real deal so I think we will do just fine if Phil goes.

i would rather not get juve as they are very good as a defensive unit but its absolutley brillaint we are in the 2nd round. Again, its a sign of progress.

we are in a very good place now and i think there was a huge over reaction to our start to the season. Some people even wanted klopp out which i could not believe.

this is his 2nd full season with the players he has bought. Ill never get carried away and things coulkd change very quickly but you can see what klopp is doing.

first stage was to get inbto the cl group stages which we did.
2nd was to get out of the group which we did
3rd is to be fighting for a cl spot which we are doing.

Some peoples expectations are ridiculous. The man is doing a very good job and we are great to watch

we know our issues. The defence is an issue. we need at least one mnore centre back. We are now beating sides who we found difficult to beat. The big tests are ahead now starting with everton on sunday. Huge few weeks coming up now and w but i could never understand how people were saying we were going backwards after 3 months of the season. We now need to show we can beat the top sides and keep puyshing on

Very wise words Sean as usual me auld sugar thrower. Progress is being made and Klopp is even tinkering with formation to make up for defensive deficiencies. It’s starting to click again and the front three are sometimes unplayable. Next month is huge. Strengthen the defence and we are in a whole new world. Midfield is good and with Keita coming next season is all but sorted. Sunday will be hard because fat Sam is a pain in the balls. Vital we win though.

Yup defence is the main issue. We dont strengthen in january we not gonna go far in the CL or the FA cup its as simple as that.

    Nerd Alert!

Obviously quality of brackets (with performance of course) donate your placing here but still…I’ll take it!

XG tries to measure how many goals a team should have scored or conceded in a game.

Rob – Posted a few months ago about XG it is the new kids on the block as far as stats go, and calculate number of potential goals a team is creating based on chances from similar positions over a good few years of football data, and is based on the assumption if a team is not doing great but is creating these chances it is only a matter of time before they start banging them in. Vice versa if a team is winning but scoring their only chance each game and winning 1-0 their points will dry up.

On a different note: aren’t we coming up to being in the same situation as last year with regard to worrying about the need to finish third in the league as opposed to 4th?

If English team wins the Uefa and CL then 4th PL team misses out right? This is why PL is actually more important this year than CL even though we are all getting romantic again about it.

I would rather go on a nice PL run and at least try and get 2nd place from Utd then we can go again next season. Finishing 4th only to be in the Uefa cup next year would be annoying.

Mwake, screw that, this is now a knock out cup competition. We need to show a bit more ambition. We can..(I know, I know insert disclaimer here)… win this mofo!
I’d rather we went balls to the wall all out to win than be overly concerned by qualification. How has that plan worked out for Arsenal. I still reckon that white flag team selection v Madrid is really what lost Rodgers his job and fan support.

Fulcrum…couldn’t agree more. That Rodgers team selection in Madrid was the day he lost the match going fans. I was at that game and the disbelief and anger amongst the fans when we saw the team was huge. Having worked so hard to get in to the competition the season before only to disrespect the competition and the fans with that team was disgraceful.

If we get into the q/fs AND finish top 4 it will represent progress.
We will have shown that in our first year back into the comp in a while that we can compete in both comps. It may not be success but defo progress which allows us to build going forward. It’ll show prospective targets that we can match their ambition by competing in both comps. Ideally we want to win both comps but small steps forward are still steps forward.
Now that we’ve got outta the group I would say the league is much more important. No point getting beat in the q/f on the CL if we finish 6th and are out of the comp the following year.
I think we’ve got the makings of a squad that can cope well in both comps.

Hightown, I know we wouldn’t be talking about this had it come off and we’d won the league but I’d imagine if that team selection had that affect on the fans what would it do to team morale and mentality. I know our squad depth was woeful but Still remember the face on Gerrard, doubt he’s past it yet.

Personally I think that selection set us back years in development, nothing to do with results, we basically told our young ambitious players (ie sterling) and the whole footballing world that we didn’t believe we were a top team.
