That’s the issue with Pogba in a nutshell. He should be many things on paper but in reality he is none of them for the club. Too much chat about him staying or going, his best position, what system he needs to play in etc. A constant Pogba size elephant in the room.

This might sound controversial but i think it would make everyone’s life easier if he left. Might allow us to start building the new midfield we’ve needed for the last 8 years.

The silence of those who slated Fergie for losing an 18 year old Pogba to Juve is speaking volumes now the man has come back and failed to live up to expectations. Just shows how fickle football opinion really is.

Thank god for that…you’re the first person I’ve agreed with since last Thursday.

Pogba = underwhelming and definitely undeserving of the captaincy, he’s like Peter Pan, the boy who never grew up.

Who would you give the captaincy to?
Leave it with Valencia? Hell no
    Smalling or Jones? Hell no
Shaw or Young? Don’t make me laugh
Matic? Maybe, again though, not vocal enough
    Lingard? Hell no
    Mata? Hell no
Martial, Rashford, Sanchez? Not one of them
Lukaku? Nope, no, no, no, no

DDG? Don’t think so, fantastic player but hasn’t shown leadership, perhaps because he’s still considering Real, he’s a model pro but not fully committed to the club?

Who SHOULD our captain be from our current squad? No-one, it’s a starkly depressing answer. We have no leaders, and won’t win a PL or a CL until that changes.

Herrera, Matic, De Gea have the qualities i think. Someone like Bailly should be getting his head down and cementing his CB position and then looking for the captaincy. Whatever is going on with Pogba needs to be sorted out this summer because he should be the ideal candidate.
It’s hard to sign a player in the summer and make him the captain straight away so it’s going to be a tough choice.
I’d say he’ll probably stick with Valencia, if he stays on for another season.

If the Fred rumours are true, he might be a candidate but, like you say, making a new player the captain would be controversial.
Valencia is a disaster, he can’t fucking speak English by all accounts, how the fuck can he be captain if he can’t communicate with his team-mates?
I think maybe Matic, he’s in central midfield and so is in a position where he can/should see everything going on on every part of the pitch. He’s been here a season so he knows the club and the players and has worked with Jose for a long time so he’s the obvious contender.
DDG just doesn’t strike me as captain material and it’s hard to really influence players in midfield and attack when you’re stuck in goal. Positionally the captain should be a defender or a midfielder, but that’s just my opinion.
Herrera doesn’t start enough games and may not even be at the club next season by all accounts. I know it’s the rumour mill but I know Valverde thinks very highly of him and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Barca make a bid that will at least make up consider whether or not to accept it.
The only thing that concerns me is that we don’t see anyone who really has a go when the team/players are under-performing the way Keane or Bruce did. We need a dynamo to really get the team going

Out of the current squad I would say Herrera is the most vocal on the pitch but that just shows how poor were are in terms of leaders.

I don’t think we lost Pogba originally through choice. Fergie wouldn’t be held to ransom by his agent. I don’t think it was anything to do with his ability that we lost him. He wasn’t sold, he just didn’t sign another contract.

That there’s no decent choices for next captain is an indication of the progress we’re making when it comes to team rebuilding!

Hi lads Chelsea fan in peace. first congratulations for securing your CL participation next season. on another season you may have won the league. but this City team is on another level. make no mistake that doesn’t mean that your efforts are not appreciated there. its a step in the right direction from you guys. and who knows with the little bit of luck and a few shake ups next season might be your season. you never say never. i was disappointed with the season we had this season. and going in to the FA cup in 6 days. i have to say you are the overwhelming favourites. after our performance against Newcastle, i’m not sure how the team will recover. in football miracles do happen. and i’m not ruling out everything. but you are everyone bet to win it. and in Mourinho you have a manager who knows how to win finals.

Re captain, it MUST be a regular starter. I prefer it not to be keeper and de Gea isn’t the most vocal of keepers so that rules him out. I’m also hoping that we either sign a first choice RB this summer or at the very least Fosu-Mensah starts pushing Valencia onto the bench. I would say Herrera but with another CM coming in to replace Carrick, Herrera will probably be a backup player next season. For me it’s gotta be Matic.

@chelsea.man Yeah, both teams are rubbish at the moment. It has the potential to be worst FA Cup final in years! For me the difference will be Mourinho. He wins finals

No players is bigger than the club,so if Pogba does not want to change for the benefit of the club he can do one, same goes for everyone else.

It would be interesting to see Pogba perform if we had a Keane in the team. I suspect we would see a totally different player but alas there are no more Keane’s around. I can’t see a single player in this squad who has captaincy qualities and that needs addressing in the summer.

Mac – We do have decent options though. How many captain options do City have outside of Kompany? Fernandinho? That’s about it.

A captain isn’t necessarily always the most vocal player. Look at Cantona in the 95/96 season when he was surrounded by kids. Bruce was still our club captain but lost his place in the team towards the end of the season. There were far more vocal players in the team but Cantona was the one who inspired others through his actions, rather than just words. There are obviously different types of captains but for me, a captain is someone who leads by example, takes responsibility and stands up to be counted for when the going gets tough. Do I see these qualities in our squad? No, I don’t and especially not in Paul Pogba. We all know what he’s capable of on his day but unfortunately those days are too few and far between.

Honestly yorkshireman….I think if we had a Keane in the team then Pogba wouldn’t have any arms or legs anymore, simple as that.

@happyhurling – I thought everybody seemed in agreement there were no decent options for candidate. Come on then, gives us your candidates and reasons.

And what’s City got to do with it. The yardstick should not be City, it should be United past captains.

We need to look for players that have come from tougher roots or have spent time in youth systems were they aren’t made millionaires after a handful of first team appearances. Eastern europe, scandinavia, south america, combined with spending top dollar on making sure we get the best, hardest working british talent already at the top of their game. Character comes from hard experiences, and most of our players haven’t had anything worse than a bad tweet to cope with.

@yorkshireman200 – Spot on. Put Keane next to him and he’d be world class.
