Some interesting fixtures to look forward to in the run up to the new season:
Thur 28 Jul: 4:35 – Chelsea
Sun 31 Jul: 3:05 – Ac Milan
Tue 2 Aug: 1:35 – Roma
Sat 6 Aug: 17:15 – Barcelona
We have Mainz 05 to play on the 7th, and that is it before our opener at the Emirates.
July 27, 2016 at 7:23 pm #1133622Well, Chelsea first up, early hours of the morning from our ‘local’ time point of view.
I hope there’s somebody in another hemishere that can put some updates on here.
Come on the Reds!
July 28, 2016 at 5:25 am #1133895Who’d have thought, Liverpool concede from a corner. Looks like the set piece woe could well continue this season.
July 28, 2016 at 7:08 am #1133901Ejaria was definitely the best LFC player and really classy.
The positive thing with these top flight matches, is that we are going to face teams with different playing identities.
Conte showed that when he parks the bus, nothing will happen and indeed we could not create a chance bar an offside goal. Chelsea was the better side even though we had possession.
Their counter attacks were best.
Firmino, who,i really rate, really looked dismal but anyway lots of physical training sessions are being carried out and it will take some time to be in their best condition and the new players to gel in.July 28, 2016 at 7:26 am #1133925Disappointed, but considering that we were missing our strikers Sturridge, Origi and Benteke plus Clyne, Can and Wijnaldum, I don’t think there is too much to be worried about.
In fact it is better to make defensive blunders in pre-season as long as they are sorted out before the start of the Premiership.
As for Ejaria, he just might brak through from the U21 side into the first team squad
July 28, 2016 at 7:28 am #1133928Number 8, I’ve only caught the feed off the paper and obviously have not any part of the game, but already, I can see there’s still areas where we could fall short against the more stronger teams and we still have players in there that are in my view punching above their weight and ones in which I personally don’t particularly have a high opinion of like Firmino, but this is where we are and this is why some part of me is in no hurry for the new season to begin purely because I can’t face yet another season going through the same heartache.
Any game like this, I don’t particularly like losing to Chelsea.
July 28, 2016 at 7:41 am #1133943Moreno apparently had a shocker and was the worst rated player, depsite having trained for 4 weeks.
We definitely need another left-back and considering how decisive Klopp has been in the transfer market, we are most likely to get one
July 28, 2016 at 7:57 am #1133973firminio has now started the last 3 games as a striker. Its only pre-season but does this give us an indication of him being ahead of ings as a striker?
only a friendly and its all about getting the players fit.
Songamn, if we dont get a left full in then its just maddness
July 28, 2016 at 8:08 am #11340036 yellow cards and 1 red card, Chelsea and Liverpool don’t do friendlies v each other! ?
July 28, 2016 at 8:09 am #1134006Sean, hope we get in a left back who can dislodge Moreno, perhaps Brad Smith going to Bournemouth indicates one moght be on the way?
July 28, 2016 at 9:54 am #1134240This is the only thing at the moment frustrating me about JK, and that’s his insistence in playing Moreno.
July 28, 2016 at 10:06 am #1134270It’s only one match but I am impressed with Klavan. As Klopp said in a slightly nicer tone, if any other centre backs thinks they are entitled to start every match, then they might get a rude shock, like Fabregas.
July 28, 2016 at 11:14 am #1134405Neither side really showed much but I’m concerned at how close to the season we are & we are showing similar problems as last season, that being conceding from set pieces & having trouble scoring.
I think people are expecting Klopp to perform a miracle & get a comparatively weaker team to compete with the big boys. The EPL is a different beast & whilst I think we will improve, others such as manu & even chelski have as well & we were already behind them in terms of quality. I just can’t see how we will make the jump into the top 4. I just hope we see some entertaining football throughout the season.July 28, 2016 at 11:21 am #1134426True songman, to be fair we were missing our main strikers so hopefully their inclusion will make enough of a difference. I’m not banking on it though, I just get the feeling we lack that bit of quality to be a real threat week in week out. Hopefully I’m wrong but after so much disappointment in recent seasons I’m finding it difficult to see the improvement being enough.
July 28, 2016 at 11:25 am #1134438Yeah Gabara Klavan looks the real deal, I love what Klopp said about him being 4th choice.
July 28, 2016 at 12:08 pm #1134507Number8wasgr8, where do you think we lack quality?
Apart from left-back, I think Klopp has done well to strengthen our weak positions from last year. And I would expect him to sign a new left-back, now that Brad Smith has gone
July 28, 2016 at 12:36 pm #1134561Songman: Aside From the obvious left back, I think we will struggle in the middle again. We have potential no doubt but I still can’t see an out & out leader in the team that will take a game by the scruff of the neck &/or lead us out of trouble, that’s in the whole team not just in the middle. We will be relying on Sturridge staying fit to get most of the goals. Whilst Origi & Ings are good players they aren’t in the same bracket as your top 20 goals a season strikers IMO. I like the look of Klavan but depending on how Matip adjusts & what happens with Sakho we could be a bit skinny at the back for quality as well. Basically mate I don’t think Klopp is going to be the saviour some think he is, mainly because we don’t have the quality of the teams we are competing with for a top 4 spot. Time will tell I guess.
July 28, 2016 at 1:18 pm #1134642Number8wasgr8, while Klopp has not signed a true world-class player, his signings will make competition for starting places much greater at and hopefully bring better results.
For instance, in midfield we have Can, Wijnaldum, Grujic competing with Milner, Henderson, Ejaria and Lucas (if he stays) for 3 places. As for stikers, Klopp plays with one striker most of the time, so it will be either Sturridge, Origi, Ings or even Firmino. While in central defence, we look strong with Loveren , Matip, Klavan and Sakho, plus Mignolet competing with Karius for goallkeeping jersey.
On paper, and only in certain areas of the pitch, we may not have the same quality of as other top teams, but does it matter really? It certainly did not make a difference to Leicester last season when they did not have the stongest squad. More important I think is the intense competiton for starting places, strong teamwork and less games dure to not having CL football.
I am not making any predictions for next season, all I want is for Liverpool to get off to a flying start and see where it leads us, plus hopefully not get too many injuries
July 28, 2016 at 2:03 pm #1134720Songman, mate I hope your right but in all honesty what Liecester done was something rarely seen at the top level. I disagree on whether you have top class players or not makes a difference, IMO it’s why we have only finished in the top 4 once in recent seasons, we simply don’t have as good a quality of player & as I said I don’t think Klopp will be the messiah some hope. I think we will improve but I don’t see any leaders in our team for when the going gets tough.
I’ll make a prediction right now that we will finish no better than 5th, we will do what we done last season & surprise a few times but ultimately we will be too inconsistent to bother the top teams over 38 games. Time will tell.July 28, 2016 at 2:28 pm #1134768Number8wasgr8, let me clarify myself, of course you need quality players, but what I meant to say (hence I quantified it by saying “in certian areas of the pitch”) is that you do not need to necessarily have the best squad to succeed.
And on paper, Liverpool’s squad has improved greatly with our new signings, at least as much as that of any other top team.
Sure, Leicester was an exceptional result that may not be repeated for some time, but who knows, it just might give unheralded teans the belief to excel. You need look no further than Liverpool 2 years ago, when we almost won the Premiership, and not with the best team either, so a title challenge is definitely possible, especially if you do not have CL football.
Klopp is no messiah, but his methods and transfer strategy worked at Dortmund, and I hope they work here too
