Seems like I wasn’t the only one to notice.
March 18, 2016 at 8:08 am #925090Nutts, i noticed aswell. He wasnt happy but hes not playing well. He needs games and time to recover his sharpness. He has been out for the best part of a year and a half. It will take time before he starts firing on all cylinders. Origi has done really well when replacing him. Were a team. We are not a bunch of invdiduals and i totally trust the way klopp is handling sturridge
March 18, 2016 at 8:28 am #925138Sturridge frustration not a problem at all, Klopp will always pick players on merit only
March 18, 2016 at 10:28 am #925357Couple of fun facts relating to last night’s game:
1) Liverpool have now become the first English team ever to beat Man United in a European competition
2) Jurgen Klopp has become the first Liverpool manager since Graeme Souness in 1991 to avoid defeat in his first game at Old Trafford
On Sturridge, he was shite last night, apart from nearly scoring a wonder goal from the free kick. He lost possession so much it was like watching Sterling all over again. He was rightly subbed in my opinion. If Sturridge is unhappy, then tough. He should now be fired up to go and score vs Southampton and prove Klopp wrong
March 18, 2016 at 10:45 am #925417Well, what a nice pleasant morning. Apart from reading about last night’s skirmishes between the two sets of supporters, the cups of tea taste sweeter than ever.
In fairness, the pendulum might have swung either way, but had United gone into the break by 2 goals, they would have fancied their chances to get the 3rd, then close us off to prevent any away goal.
Even a 2 goal cushion is never enough as I vaguely remember when Liverpool came back from a 2-0 deficient against Auxerre circa 1992 with Mark Walters getting the 3rd.
It was definitely doable for Manchester United there was no doubt about that, but our timing was perfect in the equalizer; you could see the deflated look on De Gea’s face – almost of resignation.
We’re in the hat for the last eight, and this is something we should try and see all the way through.
March 18, 2016 at 10:51 am #925444Just hope Man.United can give LVG a new long time contract, at least let him see out his contract.
All Man.United players become pedestrian after 60 min. A very good to excellent manager. Liverpool fans love him to stay in Man.United.
March 18, 2016 at 11:47 am #925630Well that was a thoroughly satisfactory night! I was with the prawn sandwich munchers last night well away from the Liverpool fans, but boy, it looked like it was bouncing in there! When Phil scored there was absolute silence for 80% of the ground, and because the goal was the far end from the Liverpool fans, it took a few seconds for it to register. But it was like popping a balloon…The fight went out of them instantly and the whole of half time all I could hear was the Coutinho song! Just loved it! Mind you, we needed that goal.
2nd half we were magnificent and just showed how poor United were. Special mentions for Sakho, Can, Lovren and of course little Phil.
Finally in irony of ironies, it is Liverpool that get charged by UEFA for disgusting chants. Believe me, United were chanting ‘The S** was right, you’re murderers’ and they are not charged. UEFA are a joke…charge them both but United get away with it!
March 18, 2016 at 12:43 pm #925798Two moments for me last night. (1), on 31 minutes, shortly after the penalty, Fergie grinning and then wondering if that cocky grin was still there on 45 minutes after making De Gea look like a duck egg and then (2) Countinho just casually eyeing up the Mancs on his victory jog.
March 18, 2016 at 1:07 pm #925847Don’t know about you guys, but that Coutinho goal was the best scored by Liverpool this season so far – my opinion of course (and I remember his goal against Stoke). It definitely reminded me of Messi in it’s execution.
And to think he was being compared to Teixeira over here recently
March 18, 2016 at 1:16 pm #925886I once scored one of them in a 5-a-side-tournament circa 99 🙂
Coutinho’s born with ability and flair. Fernando Torres scored a similar one against West Ham at Upton Park in 2009.
When it’s going for you it’s going for you and to be fair to Phillipe, he could have had a hat-trick last night.
March 18, 2016 at 4:23 pm #926396Hightown, I was hoping our supporters wouldn’t bite. Utd are the new bitters, they were out of the tie virtually. Chanting was their level & all they had to hang on to. They got away with it in the first game, that’s them. Sods law we now have a hangover we don’t need, because the name Liverpool in Europe in a ref’s report would always stir UEFA into making themselves seem less than a feeder organisation for the corrupt Fifa & an actual governing body. I worry about the actual sanction now. Supporters contain yourselves in future. Other than that, decent game last night. YNWA 🙂
March 18, 2016 at 4:28 pm #926405Nutts, when I saw Sturridge expression i thought is that the same player Gerrard had to persuade to play against Utd in the past. How times change. We don’t ever want to be in a position where we are relying upon him to be fit to play again. I would rather he went than Benteke if there is a choice between the two. At least Benteke is always up for playing whether the manager likes him or not.
March 18, 2016 at 4:29 pm #926411As for Origi, like him a lot 🙂
March 18, 2016 at 6:02 pm #926630It’s a fine line between playing a player so he can gain match fitness and playing an “unfit” player to the detriment of the team.
However, whilst I do think he will come good, I’m not sure whether his attitude will. He does seem to think he has a right to play and whether you like Origi and Benteke, they don’t moan about not playing.
March 19, 2016 at 12:50 pm #927191Wow, can’t believe people are having a pop at Sturridge. ST I don’t think he played that bad, we were under the cosh quite a bit and the support wasn’t great.
I think he’s just a little frustrated that he isn’t being given the opportunity to finish a game and probably looks around and think others play the full 90 and aren’t always on top form or regularly aren’t but still play. Top players will always want to play all games Suarez was exactly the same. That being said I genuinely don’t think Klopp wants him to break down or anything so is handling his game time where possible. So what if he looked miserable, I wouldn’t want him to look happy and he shook hands and took his place on the bench … He didn’t storm off or go down the tunnel.
Think he was probably frustrated as well at not getting a goal, such fine lines, that wonderful free kick goes in and I think that may have made a difference.
Sanj, surprised at your comment mate. I want Benteke to succeed but want him on bench getting 10 mins here and there and their is no choice in mind. If it’s Sturridge or Benteke to go it’s got to be the latter.
March 19, 2016 at 1:43 pm #927239A storm in a teacup if you ask me, all top players do not like getting substituted (Suarez, Ronaldo, Sturridge etc.), just one reason why they are the best players
March 19, 2016 at 2:15 pm #927284Not for me Bob. I would give Benteke more playing time & have Studge come off the bench more often. Some games Benteke should start ahead of Studge. The Carling Cup final was an example of a game where Studge spent the entire time in Kompany’s pocket, when Benteke would have troubled him & created more room for the likes of Firmino & Coutinho. It’s a criticism of Klopp’s team selection I know, but a valid one I think. YNWA
March 19, 2016 at 3:23 pm #927410Going to have to agree to disagree Sanj, Sturridge is the most potent scoring weapon we have and when fit (unless horribly off form) plays. His goal record is unbelievable and his all round play is much better (more of a complete striker).
That being said, as I’ve said on many occasions Benteke should’ve been given more game time and if anything would be interesting to see them play together or even Sturridge and Origi.
Songman completely agree, blown out of proportion.
March 19, 2016 at 3:37 pm #927428Bob, Sanj, as much as Sturidge is a far better all round striker than Benteke, I think that in some games it may be better to start with Bentekte instead e.g. where we need an aerial threat against a dogged physical team.
But for me the ideal is if we could play them both together and they click, if so we could have a partnership as potent as Suarez and Sturridge, but with the way Klopp plays using pressing and one striker, that is unlikely to happen (though I hope it does)
March 19, 2016 at 4:08 pm #927458I’m a firm believer in playing in-form players, especially those that are adapting to the playing style. If Studge is “in-form” then he plays and if he’s not scoring and/or not working hard for the team, then he needs to be substituted.
However, I still start him before Benteke as I think when he (Studge) comes good, he’s a lean, mean scoring machine.
It’s just the attitude thing that bugged me. If he was scoring goals for fun, then I can understand his frustration at being substituted, but he’s not. He just isn’t back to his best yet. That jinking run through the middle from Coutinho, with a great pass through to Studge, who just wasted it after great build up work – that indicates he’s still got work to do.
