tMA, agreed with most of that only I’d easily accept Morata instead of Lukaku and also, Perisic is 28. Not old, but not young either. Now Dembele on the other hand, he’s just gone 20 and is going to be a star!

This story resurfaces every summer and even if it seems to carry a bit more substance this time around Ronaldo is simply not coming back. Not now. Not ever. It’s a ploy for him to earn a better contract and the media to sell more papers/get more clicks but I still welcome it because we can use it as a smokescreen. With everyone focusing on Ronnie, we should have more room to move a bit under the radar when it comes to our real transfer targets.

jm1502-Well said it mate, spot on.And all this nonsense of CR7 being the best players in the world-No matter how many goals he scores, how many trophies he wins-he is NOT the best in the world.Messi is.

homerjay540 – I agree about Morata. He is under-rated. Griezmann played 22 more games than Morata last season yet only scored one goal more. Only Messi had a better goal to minute ratio than Morata in La Liga last season. Not only did Morata outscore main striker Benzema but he did so in a fraction of the time. Him and Jose have a good relationship and i think it will be a good signing. Tough to justify the 70-78m transfer money tbh, but what can utd do? Teams know we need a striker somewhat desperately with Zlatan and Rooney going. You can’t blame them for adding a 30% tax on top.

As you suggested, I would also be happy if we sign Dembele than Perisic. Jose knows what it takes to win trophies so I trust him to make the right signings.

TMA – I assure you that I do not hold any grudge with you or anyone else for that matter. If I did, you would be one of the first that I would stop debating with.
It is enough for me to be able to put my point over here while accepting other people’s views.
What irks and frustrates me most is when posts resemble high and mighty ‘agendas’ and posters letting their feelings cloud their judgement, besides the twisting of facts.

If ever there was a more frustrating poster than my friend ‘happy’ I have yet to meet him,but together we turned it round and learned to ‘talk’ in peace.

Your point on this issue is that you come over as trying to invoke your disagreement on Ronaldo joining United basically on financial aspects which no matter what you claim you are incorrect.
You want to see it from that angle, which is more than acceptable as long as you accept that others have as much right to see it from their personal perceptions .
Concluding that they are all wrong and you are right is your downfall irrespective if the thing happens to happen or not.

Hope this clears the mist somehow.

Oh dear, now it seems CR7 wants Real Madrid to pay the amount of money he is accused of avoiding to pay in tax if they want him to stay!.

@emicallef – I don’t think I’m incorrect to argue about Ronaldo’s transfer based on financial aspects. To summarize

    – He’s 32 and we should not pay that amount of money. Simply, he’s not worth 150m. We can get existing young player for half of that price
    – He’s not exactly what we desperately need. We need a replacement for Zlatan first and foremost
    – He left us when we were champions of England and continuously challenging in the champions league. The only logical reason for him wanting to leave Madrid is the tax issues and he’s using United transfer rumours as a way to force Madrid to pay his taxes.

This ship has sailed a long time ago in 2009 when he left us at the peak of his career.I also hope this clears the mist somehow.

PS: Not sure where you got the notion from but I’m never concluded I’m right & others are wrong. I am just putting across my opinion.

I’ll be honest, I think Ronaldo has had a lot of control in the Real dressing room, so much so I think he could be a disruptive influence in the Utd dressing room, he’s been cock of the walk for too long now.
Lets be clear, a manager and his squad will get us back to the.top, not one player and certainly not a 32 year old one. Jose will not allow anyone to question him, especially after what happened to him at Madrid. I don’t think Jose wants a player who only cares about himself and not the club, and CR7 only cares about CR7.
Good and all as he is I think Ronaldo thinks he has passed the point where the club is bigger than the player ethos applies to him. He’s on the verge of no longer being a great player because it’s all about goals for him, not results and trophies because he’s won everything he can win, as Portugal will never win a world cup.
Stay in the Bernabeu Cris, your ego suits theirs.

    @theMartialArt:
Now if we could have a headline like “Utd sold Smalling, Rooney, Young, Jones, Januzaj and Darmian for a combined fee of 75m” that would be great”.

    Couldn’t agree more.

Also, as I’ve said in another thread, and repeated in this one, if I could break the bank for any player, it’d be Mbappé. It’d also be a gamble, since he’s only had one really good season and thus, the jury still out on how he turns out, but the potential is staggering. I’d love for the club to take that chance.

Ronaldo will retire at Madrid, I’m very sure of that. What surprises me, though, is the commentary on this thread where there appears to be a lack of appreciation for how good he really is.

This is a player in the stratosphere compared to any other options and he would have maybe double the impact Zlatan had last season. Ronaldo at his age is a far superior player to anyone on the planet bar Messi and will stay at that level for at least the rest of Mourinho’s current contract. We just had a season where we missed 50 “big chances” in the league, that’s why we finished 6th. Ronaldo just scored 5 goals against Bayern, 3 against Atletico Madrid, a double against Juventus, and he scored countless crucial goals for them to wrap up La Liga. Ronaldo could do more for us in 3 seasons than what Lukaku could do in 10 but I still grasp the point theMartial Art is making – focus should be placed on younger players like Dybala, Mbappe, or Morata.

The money is negligible in my view – whether it’s Morata, Ronaldo, or Lukaku we will pay out our arses for any half decent attacking players in this market.

Anyways the whole discussion is moot because it’s just another one of his hissy fits really. Ronaldo is going nowhere but if there is any chance he is actually available he should be signed at any cost.

Looks like Di Marzio has also confirmed that Ronaldo wants to return to Old Trafford. Good job Jorge Mendes.

It’s a really interesting debate because there’s such a split of opinion and there have been valid points made for both sides of the argument. Here’s my take on the particular points of interests that have been raised.

    The Fee
The price to acquire Ronaldo looks to be about £120 million pounds. It will break the current transfer record by some distance. The considerable size of the fee seems to matter to some. Whether the club makes the money back via different commercial streams is irrelevant to us fans as none of us know or understand the mechanics of the different revenue channels the club have operating. Let’s give Ed some credit, he’s exceptionally competent when it comes to increasing Man Utd’s coffers, so if Manchester United are willing to pay up to £200 million (transfer fee and wages) on bringing in the world’s best, and most marketable, footballer to the club, then you can be certain that it is a viable investment.

    His Age
32 years old, 33 years old this season. Father time catches up with us all and Ronaldo is no longer the speedy winger that he once was, but Ronaldo knows that better than anyone else. His dedication to looking after himself and will to win is similar to a certain Zlatan ‘too old to play in the Premiership’ Ibrahimovic. Over the past three years, Ronaldo has modified his game so that he does one thing and one thing only better than anyone else in the world – stick the ball in the back of the net. That’s what Ronaldo is, and can be for the next two to three seasons as his game no longer depends on his pace. He purposely lost, I believe, 2kg of muscle so that he would be leaner and more agile, thus adapting his game so he can extend his career. If Ronaldo comes, he’ll be the fittest player in our squad.

    Depleting the Transfer Budget
Ronaldo coming to Manchester United was never part of the plan and I bet was nowhere near Mourinho’s list that he handed Woodward in March. This would be a marquee signing – a chance to buy one of the world’s best players, and therefore, while we don’t have a bottomless pit of cash, we are still one of, if not the, richest clubs in the world. Woodward would make this work, whether through begging sponsors or the Glazers to make this happen, this wouldn’t affect buying our other transfer targets. I don’t think Mourinho would let it.

    Style of Play
He doesn’t need to be part of the build up or to defend. He just needs to finish up the chances the team creates for him. Him being up top and sticking the ball in the back of the net is the hardest thing in football and what would be required from him.

    Wages
We just let Ibrahimovic go, Rooney should be on his way out, too. There’s over half a million a week on wages to go towards a star signing already. Let the likes of Smalling etc make way for the other squad players.

    Worthwhile Investment
£120 million is, I agree, a lot of money to spend on a single player. No matter who it is, but I would rather pay £120 million on the world’s best player (sorry @jm1502 but rightly or wrongly on this subjective debate, Messi is officially not the world’s best player) than pay £120 million on Mbappe. Don’t get me wrong @nil, if we could get Mbappe, that would be amazing. I would be elated as his potential is exciting. But, so is Marital and Rashford’s, as was Depay’s. If the question is whether United should spend either £120 million for an 18 year old who has won one league title, who could come to Manchester United and wilt under the demands of carrying a huge club while being the world’s most expensive player, not take to Manchester and become homesick, or be forever flirting with Madrid, or for a 32 year old who is currently the best player in the world who has won everything, is as guaranteed as you can get to being a success, and who knows what it’s like to live in Manchester and wants to be there. To me, if it has to be a straightforward choice, it’s a no brainer.

    What He’ll Bring
Goals. Success. Nostalgia. A story that will have the media fawning over United. Enhance the brand name. An attraction to other players. Instil the fear factor back in to the club. Arrogance. Star Quality. Something for the ABUs to hate. Hunger to prove he can do what he’s done at Madrid at United. Belief. Hope.

    Conclusion
    Bring our boy home.

HailMartial – Just to re confirm that while it is quite a formidable task to bring our boy back,it is very plausible and encouraging to have the majority in favour of a come back home scenario.

If it happens that the likely outcome results in the customary agreement between CR7 and Real, we can always say ‘it was good while it lasted’.

@emmicallef – 100% agree. If you don’t dream or take a chance, then you can never better your current standing. To bring Ronaldo home is a dream, but there is a chance, so United must explore it.

My last post on this story

    – One of the most decorated and talented players on the planet is going to ditch the two time defending Champions of Europe. Never ever happening. These stories of Ronaldo leaving Real Madrid are fake news. 1) Ronaldo is playing Real Madrid like a fiddle. Put it about you want to leave, Real Madrid pay his unpaid tax. Ronaldo stays. 2) Utd are just used to get Real Madrid to up his wage like Ramos did. The end
    – Messi is the best player in the world by some distance. Ronaldo doesn’t worth the transfer fee being quoted. He looked done last season until he scored against Bayern, Atletico, Juve with offside goals and deflected goals. He has all the luck in the world when he needs it. You clearly see everything is gone beside scoring. But United has no players to give him the assists. There’s no Modric, Bale, Benzema, Kross, James, Isco around. Doubt he’ll succeed at this United team, cause he has not the body of Zlatan. Zlatan is a very big guy perfectly fit for PL. Ronaldo is always complaining on the ground, you wanna see that at Utd? Dont think so.
    – I would break the world record to sign the most exciting talent in Mbappe than spending 100m+ for a 32 year old player

    Back to my fantasy land

If we ‘explore’ the Ronaldo possibility for a single second we are wasting valuable time that should be spent getting our real targets in. We’ve squandered other summers chasing rainbows and cannot afford to do it again.

Ronaldo is going nowhere and the media are fueling the bandwagon because its in their own interest to do so. Its total and utter BS. People are like Charley Brown and quite happy to try to kick the football that will be whipped away at the end of the summer .. when Ronaldo’s tax problems mysteriously disappear.

I think Messi will go down as one of the greatest players in the history of the game. But Ronaldo is far better in my opinion. Messi is pretty much a one trick pint, albeit a fantastic trick. But he doesn’t tower above defenders and smash headers in past the best goal keepers in the world, he doesn’t score all types of goals with either foot and he doesn’t pay his taxes!
Ronaldo is a more complete all round footballer, a better athlete and has simply been better these last couple of years in terms of output. Ronaldo can also replicate his form on the international stage – Plus he hasn’t got a stupid sleeve tattoo.
