@united_we_win. I don’t care about the money. It is not my money and I only care for it as far as the Manchester United Supporters’ Trust which is nowhere in the greater scheme of things. I have only attended 4 games at Old Trafford over the last 8 years. I have no leg to stand on about the money spent by the club.

I do, however, understand that world football has changed a great deal since my formative days of sparse attendances of Old Trafford. I saw the side play when it was too easy for us to wrap up titles. I saw the best of us after the toe of Solskjaer put this club into the driving seat of sporting folklore.

You have a much larger body of work that you look at but trust me ol’ bean, signing Ronaldo would not damage the clubs coffers and it would do everything to inspire the imaginations of the new generation of Manchester United fans, especially the ones ol’ Edward Woodward has on his email lists and the rest of his “database”.

    But alas, it won’t happen.

Also, my friend, you must remember that a certain Jose Mourinho has his tentacles reaching very deep into the world of the players’ agents across Europe. He knows what he wants and he knows how he can get it.

@redblood. Hahahahahaahahaha!. Nil’s essay was intense on a MacGuffin level hehe. He had great points though and I hope some take them on board instead of being “lazy cunts” of posters. I would like to think that on the instances when I post incredibly long essays there are readers who aren’t as lazy as you. Nil made a good poijnt and is correct on many points and I would love to see someone challenge him/her on.

@theMartial Art. I like that you are comparing Ronaldo to Messi because it proves your clownism to me once again. Let me indulge you as follows:

    – One man scored tonnes of goals and won the Spanish La Liga and The Champions League where he scored 10 goals in the last 3 rounds of the Champions League
    – One has given more assists in the Champions League and La Liga combined this season
    – One is currently the European Championship winning captain
    – One is a far superior professional at 32 and the other is a 29 year old “genius”
    – One has broken the scoring records of van Nistelrooy, Di Stefano, Puskas, Raul, etc.
    – One has beaten the assists records of every player to play for Real Madrid (including Mesut Ozil, Zidane, Raul, and Guti)

I am sorry my friend, but I am a 100% Cristiano Ronaldo supporter and I believe he can transform any football team into winners. He’s done at Manchester United, he’s done it at Real Madrid, and he’s done it for his country. If this man is available for transfer, we should pull the trigger. End of.

    It. Is. Not. Your. Money.

hatters – Kudos for being the man to create a first by notching up a sixth page on a fantasy thread. Sorry if no prize is forthcoming.

Do you believe that the 15mill accusation is the real reason if Ronaldo truly wants away ?
Do you believe that Ronaldo wants another improved contract package to the one recently
    acquired ?

Depending on your answers we can perhaps debate further from sitting on the fence sort of position.

@hatters – Messi is 29, Ronaldo 32. I’m not going to look up every record but in the case of the CL for example, Ronaldo is 9 ahead in CL goal totals. Well that’s gone with the extra 3 years quite easily I imagine. So your hoo-ha about Ronaldo’s records is like a false economy, Messi just needs to catch up in terms of playing time.

These days, Ronaldo can only score tap ins, meanwhile, Messi creates goals and scores more and a variety of goals. It’s obvious who’s better, MESSI. He’s from another planet. I’m sure you’ve watched the recent El classico and that settled who the best player in the world is. I know utd are stupid and other teams have mugged them in the transfer market over the years but even utd aren’t that silly to buy a 32 year old for that amount. Now, just imagine if the rumour is “man united just 11/8 to bring Messi to old Trafford”. You would be the first to spontaneously combust on this forum & i understand why.

I suspect financially it could be profitable. The money is not in prize money or shirt sales, its sponsors paying for Ronnie’s face to be on the billboard promoting their product. On the downside, our wage-turnover ratio is fixed. Big earners restrict our financial ability to have strength in depth.

In terms of football, yes he may score goals for a while BUT he is not a piece in the jigsaw. I want us to be building a team for the future, a generation of players that can stay together for many years.

OT should be the place where players become stars NOT where stars fade and die. It is saddening to see great players deteriorate and the inevitable argument and decision to drop them. Look at Rooney, it’s heartbreaking and humiliating. It’s like seeing the old war hero at the retirement home being spoon fed and dribbling his soup down his pyjama shirt. It breaks my fucking heart. Stars should go out with grace. Look at Schmeichel, Keane, Cantona, Solskaer and the many others who left top flight with grace whilst still at the top.

And do we want the circus. The circus was a major factor in SAFs decision to sell Becks. And consider the commotion if (when) Ronnie was benched. Better we spend the money (if we have it) on young rising stars.

PS – I personally don’t like rolling out the red carpet for players who turned their backs on us.

Get your point Mac and agree. Not sure Keano really left with much grace though! 🙂

Ronaldo, at 32, would come at the cost of Morata (24) and Verratti (24) combined – if we literally could spend as much money as we wanted I’d say go for Ronaldo… and Messi and Sergio Ramos and Mbappe and Hazard… you get the point. This isn’t Football Manager – we have a finite amount of money we can spend and throwing it all in to one player who is 32 years old, irrespective of his skill level, is insane.

What happens if Ronaldo gets injured? We remain with the same team as last year plus Lindelof but minus Ibrahimovic? Doesn’t make sense does it? Whereas if we sign a right winger, a striker and a central midfielder we’d be doing OK as we would be strengthening different departments which are required.

De Gea, Valencia, Bailly, Lindelof, Shaw, Pogba, Herrera, Mhkitaryan, Mata, Rashford, Ronaldo

    (high level reserves: Martial)

De Gea, Valencia, Bailly, Lindelof, Shaw, Pogba, Verratti, Douglas Costa, Mhkitaryan, Rashford, Morata

(high level reserves: Martial, Herrera, Mata)

I’d definitely prefer the latter team.

    Just asking,,

Based on your remark/question to hatters ”Now, just imagine if the rumour is “man united just 11/8 to bring Messi to old Trafford”. You would be the first to spontaneously combust on this forum & i understand why”.

If it happened that Messi would be the player instead of Ronaldo what would your reaction level amount to ???? Would you be the first, second, third to spontaneously com-bust on this forum ??

    Honest answers only please.

I agree. As such, all the more reason that cursory breakdown of revenue shows that it would be profitable.

OT should be the place where players become stars NOT where stars fade and die“.

You’ve often been clear about your stance on this matter and it’s sensible. As a general rule, I feel the same way, but I’m a big fan of context and would be open to considering the individual player. You made similar remarks about Zlatan when we signed him. As a genuine question: What’s your evaluation of that signing looking back at last season?

And do we want the circus“. No. It could be a major disruption in the dressing room. Could JM handle it?

Better we spend the money (if we have it) on young rising stars“. As I’ve said before, if we were to break the bank for one player and one player only, I’d prefer it to be Mbappé.

    @Sympathy for the Devils:

Ronaldo, at 32, would come at the cost of Morata (24) and Verratti (24) combined – if we literally could spend as much money as we wanted I’d say go for Ronaldo… and Messi and Sergio Ramos and Mbappe and Hazard… you get the point. You’re missing the point about finances. As pointed out in earlier posts, a Ronaldo purchase would have to be handled as a separate business plan; we have finite funds, sure, but if you can produce a business plan that significantly increases the chance of footballing success and has a 3-year recovery time, it can be worthwhile.

It’d take an initial investment, of course, and whether or not that money is actually there to begin with, I obviously got no idea.

To that end, you’re forgetting something when comparing Ronaldo to Morata and Veratti: Ronaldo is arguably the most marketable player in the World. The amount of revenue you can generate with Ronaldo in your roster is incomparable to what Morata and Veratti would bring to the table. And as @macguffin pointed out, the main revenue streams arguably wouldn’t be tied to prize money so that even if Ronaldo did get injured to an extent that it would severely hamper results on the pitch, the financial aspect of such a deal would be, if not unaffected, then still relatively stable.

@emmicallef. Yes to both questions. The discussion is moot really. It’s a bunch of tabloid stuff created by Ronaldo and Jorge Mendes.

@redblood. I don’t know what more painful, reading 1984 and realizing we are currently living it, reading nil’s essays, or getting sucked into “debate” with theMartial Art.

@happy – By “grace” I meant at the relative top of his game, we didn’t have to see him getting bullied in midfield or sitting on the bench. I’m sure you have not enjoyed the rotten eggs thrown at Rooney the past seasons. Imagine a situation where eggs are being thrown at Ronnie.

@Sympathy – I can imagine there being more than a few wannabe tough defenders yearning to hack the great Ronaldo off the park, which makes injury all the more possible.

@nil – My position has never changed regarding old signings, Zlatan included. I have 2 reasons, (1) I don’t like to watch a player slowly go downhill (2) I’m interested in building (maintaining) a great team that will stay together for an era. You can argue Zlatan’s goals helped us or his misses hindered us. But his signing did not move the team rebuilding closer to completion. Rashford Martial had little opportunity to develop and with Rooney going we may now need 2 top strikers instead of one.
