Jose Mourinho has included German midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger in Manchester United’s 25-man squad for the Premier League campaign.

Schweini has been a model pro since all this ‘issue’ with him and Mourinho kicked off. I don’t want to leave, I’ll stay, albeit on a huge wage, train and be ready if and when the club needs me. Old Trafford is special, the fans are great. Regardless of the past, by quitting the international squad he has committed to the club game and perhaps Jose appreciates that and decided that with time, this winner like Zlatan, might just be worth a punt.

Did Mourinho say he likes to work with a squad of 23? If that is the case 2 men have been included just for the sake of it.

I think he said 24, open to correction though

As a fan Schweinsteiger should have left. It may have given us the chance to add another signing but I can see why he stayed.

killyboye – Model pro? I beg to differ. Most players when told they are not in the manager’s plans want to move to a club where they can play regularly. They do this because they love the game and want to play. Only mercenaries prefer to money to playing.

Mourinho said he normally likes to work with a 20 man outfield squad, but this season – due to the Europa – he will up that to 23 outfield players.

Add the goalkeepers and it’s 26.

Schweinsteiger has just been included because we had space and it makes no sense to exclude him under those circumstances.

My understanding is that he could still leave, likely as a free agent. But it seems he is happy to stick around and take his chances.

I suppose diplomatic would have been a better term, he didn’t kick the toys out of the pram. It’s hard to know if he’s being a mercenary or otherwise, if he had gone to Sporting on loan he would have been on the same money regardless, Utd wouldn’t have been paying all his wages but certainly the bulk of them, so does that say thst he simply doesn’t want to play anywhere in Europe than Utd?
As far as I know, no serious offer came in from MLS or China to get him to go there.
Perhaps in the last few weeks he’s done something to convince Jose that there’s some merit to keeping him? Jose wouldn’t put him in just to make up the numbers, he’d have left out altogether and kept the space in the squad.

@killyboye – We know when injured he liked to watch his girlfriend play tennis and its fair to assume his friends are in Germany. Perhaps he has more chance to see them being close to a major airport and having more free time. He wasn’t in the U23 team that played Chelsea on Wednesday.

We know JM is angered by his refusal to leave. Making him train with the reserves was probably meant to induce him to move. I can’t see JM ever playing him. He’d rather play youth or somebody out of position.

I suspect he’d rather have the easy life than play elsewhere. Thats mercenary in my book. But only speculation of course.

@mac, totally agree that could be the case. I’d like to think though that maybe he’s done something to convince Jose that he might be worth having around.
Given a choice of being in Lisbon or Manchester, I know which I’d choose. Maybe Jose is just making up the numbers, I’d like to think that he’s upped his level and Jose is looking at him. Optimism maybe
