As pointed out previously the 6’4 Lukaku is gonna win some headers durin the course of a game. It’s how we react to this is the issue.
Lovrens ability to win aerial duals is one of his strengths. The stats back this up.March 13, 2018 at 4:08 pm #1611575I hate to say it but we probably miss somebody like coutinho in that game.
March 13, 2018 at 4:10 pm #1611577I still think we need an upgrade on lovren though if we got extra money in the summer.
March 13, 2018 at 4:16 pm #1611585Songman – Different positions mate, if Salah and Mane had of swapped positions, Young and Valencia wouldn’t have. The CB’s need to know where they are, one left one right, if you start telling one to follow a player the whole structure of the defence goes. Going back a few years and managers used to use a certain player for man marking duties, one that was not part of the back 4, to just go and sit on a player, it means you play with one less player but so do they, and it is their most dangerous player. Not many can do the job, and it is not a fashionable way to play these days.
March 13, 2018 at 4:23 pm #1611587mwake – Mourinho hassn’t invented that, shit when I was playing 25 years ago we would pick which CB’s we would sit on, I usually took the big slow bugger, and my lanky strike partner would take the small quick one.
Even in the Prem, watch Harry Kane, he picks on the same CB pretty much all game, all decent players do that, remember up top is much more fluid than at the back, player regular switch side / positions, but at the back the line stays settled.
March 13, 2018 at 4:52 pm #1611600Completely agree about swapping Mane and Salah round mid game.
We should have done that a few times to confuse their fullbacks and to see if we got any joy.March 13, 2018 at 4:57 pm #1611606ginger, I like Lovren but aerial duals are not his strongest attribute, if I recall correctly he was winning about 75% of his duals. Matip was a little bit better at 78 or 80% but Van Dijk was closing in on 90%.
I highly doubt we will see another defender come in during the summer, Gomez will likely get to play there next season, with the club phasing out Klavan.
I would keep it in mind that some fans simple do not understand football and that there is no explaining with them, they just get back to the same argument again and again. Without ever realizing they are in the wrong or seeing the bigger picture.
March 13, 2018 at 5:02 pm #1611610Paxman, I don’t understand your comment regarding Salah and Mane? Of course, their full-backs would not have swapped positions, but would be facing different and more confusing challenges from new players.
I definitely would have swapped them around at some time in the 2nd half, and I’ve seen them swapped/moved around in a few matches already (only for parts of the game), so I don’t understand why it could not have been done on Saturday
March 13, 2018 at 5:07 pm #1611611As Sanj said earlier, it’s time to move on to the next game.
We lost on Saturday for a variety of reasons, not just one specifically – TAA’s poor marking, Lovren losing headers to Lukaku, Klopp not starting with Gomez, not switching Salah and Mane etc.
Hope the boys comeback with fire and anger and destroy Watford on Saturday
March 13, 2018 at 5:22 pm #1611613TAA has a not so good game against Man.United and so did the away Man.City game. The opponent managers made him a target. It just told us that he is not good enough in defense, at least not yet. He is too short as a full back at a 4 men back line. If he is playing as a wing back in a 3 CBs formation, he will not be bullied in the air so much. Of course, it was his wrong position that caused the first goal. He should always stand on the right hand side of the opponent left winger so that even the opponent winger got the second ball, he cannot cut in the box so easily.
Personally like the style of TAA but I am afraid that his chance will become lesser in the near future because Klopp is unlikely to change to a 3 CBs formation and Naby Keita will give TAA no chance to be played as a RM. TAA is facing an uphill battle. He must work a lot harder than others in order to get a starting spot.
March 13, 2018 at 5:24 pm #1611614He’s definitely premier league quality defender but is he a top 4 Premier league defender?
For me it’s not about which-hunting on Lovren just because he came off worse to a quality player like Lukaku. It’s the repetitive mistakes that Lovren is known for. Sometimes I have to find humour in it because we know this is just what Lovren does… Klopp said at the start of the season that he couldn’t find better defenders in world football than the ones he had. That led me to think Lovren must have some important incriminating information on Klopp or something 😊

March 13, 2018 at 9:50 pm #1611806Masterful tactics.
March 13, 2018 at 10:05 pm #1611826Ben Yedder seemed to have escaped the mighty Ashley Young’s pocket this evening.
March 13, 2018 at 10:15 pm #1611840Mwake, that’s a good list. ☺
March 13, 2018 at 10:17 pm #1611844Anyone seen TMA?
March 13, 2018 at 10:31 pm #1611860I haven’t seen him this evening Kopite… Shanksy, you seen him? 😄
March 13, 2018 at 10:44 pm #1611870Dejan Vu ! Same score as Saturday & seem to remember Jose going out of the CL as Chelsea manager after he beat LFC when we were going for the title under Brendan. He still has the FA Cup to play for this season though & could be the opponent when City are crowned champions, unless the long ball park the bus tactics outsmart Pep too. ☺
March 13, 2018 at 10:44 pm #1611871Martial probably didn’t know the game was on.
March 13, 2018 at 10:54 pm #1611879He took the usual bus to the game, but it broke down on the way tonight Rob. 😄
