had a feeling the game v burnley would be a tight one.
honestly don’t get why we don’t cross the ball more and
get more bodies in the box.burnley defended so well and
their 5 in midfield was hard to break down.so frustrating
why we went from side to side all of the time instead
of giving them something to think about than the norm.

when we finally crossed the ball we got a lucky winner.
what that saying”,don’t buy a ticket you don’t win the
raffle”.thought the game was crying out for giroud and
rambo.the positives is we won and are now just 2 points
behind citeh.the plan B everyone talks about is just
simple, cross the god damn ball and have more players
in the box.we must vary our play more often.

Steve- we will continue to have a problem if other sides replicate Burnley’s display. They took an age to have their first shot on target and arguably could have won the game with their shots/ headers. If the opposition sits back, and Ozil plays like he did, where’s the creativity? We are then restricted to full backs running down the lines and crossing to those giants,Sanchez and Walcott! Why not more incisive passing and runs off the ball- it was all so passive and slow on Saturday. I also think that this current system relies to a huge extent on Sanchez running, chasing and harrying for 90 minutes- no-one else in our squad can do that. Can he do this for 9 months?

Maintained for some time we lack width and always end up attempting to play through the middle with one-2’s and silly flicks. No one will shoot and no one can/will cross the ball. We took the field on Sunday without a recognised striker on the pitch or the bench. Our width comes from our full backs, they are always out of position and neither of them can cross the ball. Then again without anyone that can head the ball who would they cross to. The last Arsenal player I can remember who could cross the ball would be Anders Limpar and before him Brian Marwood. Non of the present lot can.

jeff & oracle.what frustrates me is not so much the height
we may have in the box but more the lack of quality.paul
scholes was not the biggest of players but how many times
did he get in that box and get on the end of things.i think
i say this with 100% certainty,we don’t bother doing anything
on the training ground and i find that a shame.

i believe that if the quality of ball into the box is of a
high standard then it doesn’t matter how big the defenders are.
i believe that if you put enough quality crosses into the box
then the defenders have to get it right every time, while we need
to just get it right once.it’s small, small details that turn
into bigger things.when teams set up like burnley i think it’s
essential we get that midfield player who can go beyond the striker.
thought rambo would have given us that and i’m glad he’s back
after the international break because we don’t have anyone like
    him in the squad.

on sanchez.i would play him till he drops.his workrate up front
is unbelievable and it may just be the case that we could have
a fit, more fresh giroud come the second half of the season instead
of him burning out or the burden of him being the lonely striker.
i don’t know the statistics or facts but i would bet that the likes
of barca’s fab front 3,suarez,neymar and messi score a lot more from
crosses than say giroud who is a lot bigger.it’s the quality or a
    lack of in our case.

Steve, Good point about Scholes. David Platt was similar for us, not always great between the two penalty areas but inside either box very effective. I maintain we do have a problem, if no one can cross the ball a target man will not get the service, if you play without a target man no one will attempt to cross the ball. Width is the key to breaking down massed defences.

Both Brian, Brian Marwood on the wing (on the wing!) and Limpar had Alan Smith to cross to. Funnily enough, people were making comparisons between Smudge and Giroud a season or so ago. Maybe Giroud’s main issue is that he’s an 80’s/90’s player?

And talking about Smudge and our width, he actually commented during the Burnley game about how Barca’s wide players hug the touchline and how he thought we’d get a lot more joy if Theo, Iwobi and Co did the same and he definitely has a point.
