Folks i believe it is a question of time. every players speak highly of Wayne. I think he is very smart. mourinho should be caareful how to tackle Rooney. Note that he is still earning a lot for the club in terms of merchandise. That is the only reason he is in the team and the second one is he is holding the dressing room. Jose will try to accomdate Rooney this season and he will break all records this year then he should call it a day. Rooney can have 10 best games with us this season and that is enough for him to call it a day.. What are your thoughts folks?

happyhurling – I can probably find you Peter Crouch’s England stats from 2006 that make Rooney look like a chump, doesn’t mean he’s better though. What happened from August 2015 until January 2016? What happened after he came back from injury? What happened after the 2 MOTM performances for England? How did he really play against Bournemouth in terms of performance and not just in terms of stats? Why didn;t you mention the Community Shield vs Leicester?

Just picking out stats beneficial to your argument doesn’t make for a good discussion or give your argument solid ground to stand on.

The truth is that, whilst Rooney hasn’t actually done THAT badly in terms of statistics, anyone who watches the matches can see that his first touch is gone, he’s slow to run and react and can’t dribble – three of the most important areas for a no.10 to excel at.

At this time would you prefer having Rooney as our No.10 or the likes of Coutinho, Hazard, Sanchez, Ozil, Silva? I’d take any of the others at this point in time.

Classic happy picks out one good month in 8 to back his argument. 2motm performances for england? Which games were you watching? Anyway you don’t need to worry about super Wayne, nothing will happen to him he has his place in the side secured. Pogba will probably play next to fellaini with rooney, mikI and martial ahead

@happuhurling. As sympathy says above, Rooney’s statistics aren’t bad but when I watch the games I always think of what could be if he was dropped. Manchester United always dominates games and Rooney is still a good enough player to pop up in the right areas for the odd goal, to pick out a good assist now and then, and to generally add (some) value to an extent.

The thing is, however, we now have a better specialist player in every position Rooney can play in (no 9 is Ibra and Rashford; no 10 is Mata and Mkhitaryan; no 8 is Herrera and Pogba). When I watch the games and see countless promising attacking moves break down because of Rooney passing backwards, or taking a bad touch it’s vexing. The problem is patent – he is hindering the team. I am convinced we would score more goals as a team without Rooney.

    @hatters:
This, to the point, is why I have a problem with Rooney. He’s a decent player. You can pull up statistics from the games he plays and use them to draw a picture of a player making decent contributions to the team. However, in every position in our attacking line there are players I’d pick over Rooney.

Hatters – I’m pretty sure Mourinho is here to win titles and to do that he will pick the best players we have in the best positions. He won’t suffer any player if they’re not performing, regardless of reputation or what they have done in the past. We saw his ruthless side at Real Madrid and Chelsea. If Micki, Rashford, Depay, Mata or whoever is better than Rooney then fair enough, I am sure Mourinho will see this and act accordingly.

The one thing that people gloss over when they argue Rooney is past it is this – why is he still being picked in the team when, as they say, there are so many better options ahead of him? And I don’t want to hear any nonsense about him being afraid to drop Rooney because of his status because he dropped Casillas who was bigger than Madrid at the time.

@happyhurling. Fair point. If the team continues to win with Rooney making a difference I am sure Mourinho will keep him in the team.

Either way, though, he can’t dribble past players anymore and he slows down the speed of play, not to mention the impressive consistency with which he mis-controls the ball. When we hit a rough patch we will see what happens.

Casillas wasn’t dropped straight away. I think it was in jose’s last season in madrid

Happy – you raise a good question – why does rooney contiunley get picked?

I honestly think its a combination – wouldnt surprise me if in his latest contract he has stiuplated he must be the captain and play every game if match fit and 2) its merchandising as hes the highest english player in terms of worldwide profile its better comercially if hes in the team

Happy, you could also ask the question why does almost everyone in the sports media still rate and constantly praise Rooney when most United fans who watch him every week know he’s well past it and has been poor for 3 years? It’s a mystery to me!

rs83 – Can a footballer really get that written into his contract? I’m not sure. I can’t believe that the only reason Rooney is playing is because its something written into his contract? Plus i’m pretty sure LVG left him out a few times last season so that can’t be accurate.
Yorkshireman – The fans at OT love him, they sing his name all game and go mental when he scores. The bile about him on here isn’t on show at old Trafford, not any time that I’ve been anyway.

Hh, I’m a Rooney fan to begin with. Let’s take the Bournemouth game, apart from the 2 crosses and a goal, What else did Rooney do better than 34 year old zlatan? The answer is averge at best. He was dire to watch, struggling to dribble, run forward and pick up the right spot for a number 10. I saw more of mata picking up the right spot for a number 10. The zlatan back heel to Rooney should’ve be in the back of the net. Rashford would have buried that if he was playing.Take away nothing as he scores the odd goal nowadays, I’m seeing Rooney just like Ruud van nistelrooy towards the end of his old Trafford career. Scoring goals but dire to watch.

Not sure professionals still rate him. The media now talks that he cannot be sure of an England place and people like Parker are critical. Scholes said he has peaked, which is another way of saying on the downhill slope. And remember, as a general rule people in any profession praise fellow professionals. Ever hear an actor saying another actor is rubbish.

As for why managers pick him, lets look at that. SAF preferred RvP, benched him or tried to play him in midfield and was happy to sell him. Last year he was the only established striker so its easy to get picked when there is little competition. In short Rooney has been picked the past seasons because the squad has been poor and there’s been few alternatives.

But does it matter. Rooney is the past not future. He’s here this season and no doubt next season we’ll sign strikers and.or our youngsters will become established. Rooney will fall down the pecking order and play less games. If he doesn’t go to China he’ll become a bench warmer next season.

happy – Isn’t it becoming common that players (agents) are demanding a certain number of appearances. And if the player is a commerical brand then sponsors could expect him to play else there would be financial penalties.

I’m sure there will be contractual inducements if not obligations but they would never force a manager to pick him, just make not picking him costlier.

The reason Rooney has played is for the reason you have often given. He’s been better than the alternatives. Being less bad than others is a far cry from being good.

@red4life. Brilliant point about van Nistelrooy mate. I remember that we had van Nistelrooy as our main focal point in 2005/06 and he scored 21 Premier League goals. He was seen as our savior and only hope but we had finished 2nd – SAF sold him at the end of the season to build a more tactically balanced attack consisting of Ronaldo, Rooney, Saha, and Solskjaer.

van Nistelrooy was still a good player but he was not adding enough with his all round game, SAF saw this and I sure Mourinho will notice the same of Rooney soon enough.

We can’t just use the stats of one player to judge whether or not we can win the title, we need to judge the stats of the team. The future of the Manchester United attack is being held back by Rooney at the minute.

@united_we_win. Exactly mate, as I said before, Paul Parker is an idiot. He just happens to be correct about Rooney in this instance but 99% of the time he is babbling on incoherently.

Hatters- I hope so mate. If JM ship him out now. The papers and opp fans will have a field day but hailing Pep being ruthless and showing ambition for leaving hart on the bench. I think JM is doing the right thing by letting him play and later if he does not perform, he will tell him off and give Rashford a chance to show how it is done. Keeping my finger crossed.

@happy – Do you actually believe Rooney was MOTM for England in those games? Lets be honest he was average, spraying a few hollywood passes all over the place doesn’t make you a good player, the moment he came up against a half decent team he was anonymous. He has been poor for us for a long long time now. He has always had a poor touch and his use of the ball was always questionable however what got him out of jail for many years was the fact that he had a great work ethic, buzzed around the pitch and scored goals. He doesn’t really do either anymore, coupled with the fact that his touch has got worse, his passing has got worse and his ability to beat players has pretty much gone. Great servant for the club but in no doubt that he should be behind a lot of out players in most positions.
