People always do their ‘best’ all time XI, so just for fun I figured I’ll do my own ‘personal’ all time XI instead. This is a team of players that I don’t necessarily think are the best, but I enjoyed watching them the most, was in awe of their ability and always looked forward to their games.
Obviously some choices are biased and influenced by my support of Arsenal.
It wasn’t easy because I left out a lot of players I admired, but after considerable thought this is what I came up with:

DAVID SEAMAN (Safe hands. Immaculate positioning sense meant he often never even had to make a save. Rarely beaten 1-on-1. Usually only beaten by unbelievable strikes)

TONY ADAMS (Just completely dominant. Best CB of all time as far as I’m concerned)

ALAN HANSEN (As a youngster, I thought it wasn’t fair Liverpool had this guy because he seemed impossible to pass)

LILIAN THURAM (Always admired Thuram right throughout his career. Wished Arsenal would sign him)

ROBERTO CARLOS (Has there ever been a more flambouyant, exciting defender to watch?)

PATRICK VIEIRA (Like Adams, completely dominant. Probably the single biggest reason for most of Arsenal’s success in the Wenger era)

ANDRES INIESTA (This guy plays football like an absolute dream. Oozes skill, intelligence and class)

CESC FABREGAS (I was always thrilled to watch Cesc play for us. Knocking it around, pulling defenders out of position and playing killer balls. I think he is as much to thank for Arsenals current style of play as Wenger himself)

DIEGO MARADONA (I pretty much missed the Pele era, but I caught Maradona in his heyday! Ridiculous. Unplayable)

LIONEL MESSI (I doubt there has ever been a finer football player in the history of the game)

THIERRY HENRY (So much fun to watch. Skillful, fast, unselfish, clinical. Va va voom!)

I have to give a special mention to a few players who almost made my XI:

    Hugo Sanchez
    Ian Wright
    Denis Bergkamp
    Ronaldinho
    David Rocastle
    Zinedine Zidane
    Xavi
    Lothar Mathaus
    Paulo Maldini
    Cafu
    Franco Baresi
    Sol Campbell
    Bruce Grobelaar

Thanks for reading if you got this far. I’m sure you’re probably outraged by my choices lol.

    What XI would you choose?

Top shout Fox, not too sure about Grobbelaar – Our mates at school (around the early 90s in secondary school) nick-named him as a ‘goof up’. Now we find him involved in current affairs of our squad!

Do you have any recollection of Mexico 86 btw?

    Midfield 3: Zidane, ronaldinho, Viera

    Strikers: messi, Fat Ronaldo, ronaldo

Special mention for Koeman, he was the first centre back I remember watching that I thought “wow is he supposed to be able to pass, shoot and control the ball like that….is he really a centre back?!” I was a centre back in my glory days – he was my idol at the time lol

Can’t be arsed naming an all time Eleven, But looking at some of these I can see points for all named but probably being a bit older than some, How the likes of Pele, Cruyff, Beckenbauer and many others are overlooked only those who have posted will know.

TBH Nil there have been so many top drawer players in all positions who have graced the game over the Decades, As I’ve said I can see why posters have put their choices together and to be fair they are all very good Eleven’s, I just feel that it’s nigh on impossible to put a really definitive Eleven together due to the amount of Greats who have graced the Game.

Ìts a personal 11 taxi, so I only picked players I have seen. Good call on Zanetti Nil, I went with 3 at the back as I couldn’t think of a right back I wanted to include!

Fair Do’s Johnny, I’m not dissing anyone’s choices as they are personal, I just feel there have been so many greats to have graced the game that get overlooked.

Haha Johnny, I’d probably just go for the Dutch WC side from 74 and put Ray Clemence in goal instead of Jan Jongbloed.

Taxi, yes; it’s widespread, which of course leaves it open to explore.

I think it boils down to those who have lived longer and have seen players in Best and Pele play (be it flesh or on live television) to be able to name them in an all time 11.

Unfortunately, as time has gone on, newer generation of supporters have missed out on the finer examples in Matthaus, Van Basten, and even someone in Romario.

Makes me think I’ve been a bit lucky!

    Cheers

Nail on the Head there Nil, That’s why I respect the choices of the posters who have put their Eleven’s up, I grew up admiring the Silky skills of Cruyff,The Masterful defending of Beckenbauer, The Midfield Industry of Johan Neeskens and the Deadliness of Gerd Muller, Bring it on 40 years and We are all marvelling at players of Today and rightly so.

These things are so subjective, from players I haven’t seen mentioned but here goes. 4-3-3

    GK: Zoff

LB Junior RB Jaoa Pinto CB Battiston CB Hansen

MF: Original Falcao – Hagi – Stoichkov

ST: Zico – Rossi – Van Basten

I think that team would give anyone a run for their money.

iF you are honest this is easily and by far the best team of all time
a team this strong does not need a defensive mid-fielder. there are of course a few other players that come close.
