Have to admit that I’m becoming increasingly concerned about Pogba’s ability to shine when the spotlight is well and truly focused on him. He was notably absent in yesterdays game, was bullied out of the midfield and missed one obvious chance that if he didn’t score he should have at least gotten on target but fluffed wide.
I’ll admit I haven’t seen him in many big games but the other one I saw him in was the CL final against Real for Juve when he also was more of a bystander. Admittedly this was a few years ago and he has matured since then but the same thing happened yesterday.
The question is, have we got ourselves a player who can dominate the lesser teams but goes absent in the big matches?

@killyboye. You make a very important point mate. Pogba is 23 now, although he is young (especially for a creative central midfielder) he does have a bit of a reputation for being a big match bottler. He was poor yesterday, poor in the CL final, and also poor in the Euro 2016 final.

I am of the belief that his sheer talent level will eventually correct this but I must admit it is worrying and he will need some guidance from Mourinho and Deschamps. I saw a player trying to grab the headlines yesterday instead of a player who was playing his normal game.

Give him time – hes still new to the league so it does take time to get up to speed for some players. Next year you will see an improved Pogba

As Hatters said hes 23 – fairly young for a midfielder and i wouldn’t expect him to dominating games right now, doesnt matter how much he costs thats irrelevant

Just think his best years – 24-27 are still ahead of him. Once we get the right partner for him in midfield things will settle down. Carrick has been a great servant but you saw yesterday when teams press he hasnt got the legs anymore.

Carrick is good when teams sit back and dont pressurise him, unfortunately not many teams will do that

I know he’s young in terms of age but he’s a vastly experienced midfielder at this stage, he’s played in a Champions League final, he’s played for Juve against Inter and AC Milan, games that carry every bit as much pressure that Liverpool v Man Utd, and he went missing yesterday. I feel he will come good but it is a concern that he might not.
Yes, his managers need to work on this with him but he’s played with some of the best players in his position in the world, Pirlo who could be called one of the greatest ever midfielders, Vidal, Marchisio. It shouldn’t be as much of an issue as it seems to be given the amount of experience he has.

Pogba’s been playing well lately and everyone can have an off game. What worries me, though, is that he delivered THAT in THIS game – on the biggest stage against our bitter rivals. The fact that he was showing off a new haircut and the advertising boards featured his name and emoji didn’t do him any favors because those things will never go down well with anyone over 20. They could be silently tolerated if he delivered on the pitch but he didn’t and I’m sure if the likes of Keane and Scholes were still here they’d be kicking lumps out of him in training for that bullshit.

Like I said, he’s been playing well lately but the praise and peroxide probably got to his head so it’s important for Paul to buckle up and prove his worth next match. No one can win every match on their own but Pogba should be dominating matches and driving us on. Forget the silly hairstyles, emojis, selfies and that fucking dab thing, Paul. Your main objective is to win football matches, not impress 9 year olds.

Ronaldo was once labelled as a player who goes missing in big games. Most players go missing in big games as they are so tense and evenly matched. Pogba’s problem is that he needs to adjust his game slightly in these games. You don’t get time on the ball. You can’t try the fancy flicks, etc.

I can’t fault him too much for the goal as he should have been helped out more or took off Lovren. He used his arms for leverage but because he jumped too late he was mid jump when the ball arrived instead of at the top of his jump.

His miss was frustrating but he does that in other games too. They’ll start going in soon enough IMO.

Just needs to cut out the off field image bollocks.

Pogba is a big concern for me, when Ronaldo “went missing” in big games he was a £12.5m kid finding his feet by trying too many step overs. Pogba is the most expensive player in the world and whilst he is young, at that price you are going to get judged on how you do up against Liverpool, City and Chelsea…not Middlesborough and Hull.

Give him time to find his feet by all means but he’d earn himself breathing space by bossing a midfield against a big rival. And if you’re going to invite telly in to film you having your haircut and then launch an emoticon of yourself…you have to turn in a world class performance in your next game or you’ll look like an utter prick.

And for the record I was very happy when Fergie sold him, cringed alot when I read newspaper reports of how well he was doing for Juventus but then scratched my head when I actually saw him play for them and subsequently for France. I would love nothing more than to be proved wrong but whenever I have seen Paul Pogba play for an adult team in a big game he has looked like a little boy lost.

That said he’s hit the post more than any other Premier League player this season (still classed as a miss) and in all those unlucky draws earlier this season he created umpteen sitters that were missed by Ibramovic so his goals and assists could be a hell of a lot better around the small margins but you don’t break the world transfer record for an if only player. There’s no place to hide for any player at Old Trafford, let alone a self confessed dandy who loves the limelight and cost that much money.

Totally agree on Pogba. The kid has undoubted talent. That’s why there are moments of real quality in matches from him. However, for £90m quid you expect more than moments. It just seems that he still doesn’t know how to apply his talent to get the best out of himself. It seems his understanding of the game and how to play in a team is still not there. The lack of cover for Rashford against Arsenal on the equaliser is a moment that typifies what is missing. I remember watching him in the CL final and was disappointed. Vidal and Pirlo always stood out more for me in that Juve team. Hopefully Mourinho can help him improve and reach his potential. The amount of stick he is taking after yesterdays game is actually a good thing. It will make him realise there is still plenty of work to be done!

If you’re expecting Pogba to give a 10/10 performance every game he plays then you’re going to be terribly disappointed.
I watched the weekend games of RM and Barca. In both their star players were non existent. In the RM v Sevilla game all we saw from CR7 was a period of ‘look at me’ after the scored from the spot. All that Messi did was run around doing nothing – might have his contract dispute on his mind.
Pogba will prove to be one of UTD’s most intelligent acquisitions – all he needs is time and personal maturity. Both will come.

Wondering on an update on this thread, despite Mourinho’s claims last night I’d argue he went missing against Chelsea and he was far from convincing against Bournemouth as well. When I posted first in January people were saying give him time but I think that attitude is changing

I thought for the first half last night he did well along with Herrera and Jones. He went missing after the sending off but you could say that about most players though. Some argue he could have done more for the goal and again he scuffed another shot wide but overall I wouldn’t have singled out Pogba last night for criticism but equally I wouldn’t be praising him like Jose has done.

I’m wondering does he have the discipline to be the kind of player Jose wants him to be and is that why Fergie ulltimately let him go? In Juve he was always next to players who were supremely disciplined in their roles, Marchisio and Vidal who knew he needed support to go off and do what he does best. Do Utd need to buy a Makelele type defensive midfielder who generally won’t stray past the halfway line and is, as a result, always there to cover if Pogba is caught woefully out of position if a move breaks down? If this how to get the best from Pogba, and if so is he really the kind of player we want/need at United?

It’s all about finding players who compliment each other. Pogba looked good alongside Herrera and Jones as they were always there behind him to cover him defensively.

It will get to a point though in these big games that he will have to step up.

Truth is he was average in the 1st and piss poor in the 2nd half last night and should have been subbed. He also looked tired. He doesn’t have the discipline to defend so the sooner we re-build the midfield to allow him a free role like Lampard had the better.

If Pogba needs better players in order give him the free role and play the number 10 role, then where does that leave Miki, who pratically is a number 10, Mata who is also a number 10, Griezmann if he arrives is a number 10 too. Fact is in the number 10 role, I would have Miki and Griezmann ahead of Pogba, Miki is proving to be someone who is a good finisher, something Pogba has set to prove.

Has the club bought another number 10, a position that did not need improving?
