i think they wanted an expensive marquee near world record signing….so they created one as all those genuine players wouldnt sign for them as already at bigger better clubs

@steveosnakeeye. True, it’s clear that Pogba is a marquee signing and is grossly overpriced but that shouldn’t detract from critical analysis of the two players’ virtues and pitfalls.

Dembele is a more disciplined midfield player with great balance, centre of gravity, and dribbling. He has no real weaknesses and should be compared to players like Kante, Matic, or Schneiderlin.

Pogba falls short on mentality, positional sense, and also has shown great profligacy this season but his ability to pick out a pass (especially a lofted ball over the top), win aerial battles, and shoot from distance is superior to that of Dembele.

One of these players has been playing in the Premier League for 6 years and the other for 7 months.

lets put it this way hatters, if Pogba went in to the Spuds team now (replace Dembele) would they be better or worse? And vice versa?

mine would be in favour of Dembele both times but lets see if we say the same next year he may well be a different beast by then

@steveosnakeeye. You aren’t grasping my point. The position Dembele fills is that of Carrick in our team.

These two players are not like for like. In actual fact, Dembele would enable Pogba. Midfield is about balance.

As I said, compare Pogba to Eriksen and we are closer to apples with apples.

Compare Pogba to Eriksen??? Whilst the Dembele / Pogba comparison is a bit silly to compare him to Eriksen is bizarre. If we’re comparing him to anyone in the Spurs squad it’s got to be Wanyama and on current form the Kenyan pisses all over the worlds most expensive player.

How United paid £90m for Pogba is beyond me – Desperation!

@tim vick. I suspect you are winding me up. Wanyama is not an attacking midfielder, the only similarity he has with Pogba is they’re both black.

hatters – £100m for Griezmann is fine because he will score goals, something Pogba doesn’t do and isn’t renowned for.

Very strange comparison this Manthistle. You couldn’t really achieve ur Pogba bashing on the United pages now you resort to this? Wow!!!
Dembele should instead be compared to Carrick as they play the exact same position and are in both their sides to do exactly what Dembele does, ie, break up play and keep the ball ticking. Pogba is an entirely different player from Dembele, he’s a box to box as Hatters has mentioned and CREATES chances rather then BREAK UP PLAY AND TICK POSSESSION OVER which is what ur mate Carrick is there for.
All the matches that we’ve struggled in are mainly due to Pogba being ineffective and that alone should tell u the value he brings to the team.
Lest we forget, Dembele is 29, has played PL football for over 6 years. Pogba has only been around for 7 months and never had pre season with the rest of the team.
Should’ve rather compared Dembele to Carrick and watch how ur favorite player is rightly shredded by everyone on here

hatters I suspect it’s you on a wind trying to compare Paul Pogba with Christian Eriksen. Seriously pal? I think the problem is that Pogba doesn’t seem have a defined role, he’s a jack of all trades master of blasting the ball over the bar. I also think that there are a lot of Man Utd fans that are so desperate to see him succeed they are seeing qualities in him that are just not there.
It’s too early to judge him as a young man burdened with such a massive price tag and weight of expectation is bound to struggle but the reality is he has underwhelmed in his first season.
He may become the all conquering box to box, defensive forward goalscoring playmaker that you lot keep telling us he is, but too us rational neutrals he just looks a bit shit at the moment.

What I expected from Pogba when he signed-

    – A player who could drive forward with the ball at his feet
    – A player who could dictate and control the game
    – A player who plays similarly to Yaya Toure and Patrick Vieira
    – A beast who boss’s the game

These are the attributes and comparison I was told he had. He has shown the above on rare occasions, but generally he has been poor this season. He needs to spend more time improving his footballing attributes rather than improving his dance skills on Instagram. The skill is there, the mentality isn’t.

If you set up with a 4-2-3-1 formation Pogba is invariably played as one of the 2 for Utd or as the no.10 if both Carrick and Herrera also start. When he plays in the 2 he is the more attacking of the two. Spurs play a similar formation with Dembele and Wanyama playing as the 2. Wanyama is the one who sits and breaks up play whereas Dembele has the composure, football brain, style, panache, drive and control. He averages 3 dribbles a game (and I don’t mean baby dribbles) so he is more box-to-box than you think. I think he is very similar to Pogba and if Pogba turns out to be a similar or better version of Dembele (or say Toure) then I’ll be happy.
