The subject of spending came up in another topic. It’s helpful for us all to have some facts so here’s the revenue & transfer spending since the Glazer takeover ….
REVENUE – [source: Deloitte Money League]
05/06 = 167.8m
06/07 = 212.1m
07/08 = 257.1m
08/09 = 278.5m
09/10 = 286.4m
10/11 = 331.4m
11/12 = 320.3m
12/13 = 363.2m
13/14 = 433.2m
14/15 = 395.2m
15/16 = 515.3m
16/17 = 581.0mSPENDING [source: transferleague.co.uk]
05/06 = 1.0m
06/07 = 4.1m
07/08 = 26.5m
08/09 = 33.7m
09/10 = (64.5m)
10/11 = 13.5m
11/12 = 38.1m
12/13 = 51.1m
SAF RETIRE == NET TOTAL 103.5m (average 12.9m pa)13/14 = 66.7m
14/15 = 104.2m
15/16 = 28.1m
16/17 = 102.0m
17/18 = 136.2m
NET TOTAL == 437.2m (average 87.0m pa)
NOTES
In 2005 the Glazers promised an annual transfer budget of 25m which most fans thought reasonable at the time. They spent in reality half that amount.Interesting stat ….. 25m (promised budget) was 15% of revenue when the Glazers took over. Our average spend since SAF left is 15% of our present revenue. Can we expect 87m pa to be the average?
Has the investment since SAF retirement been “massive” given the market rate for players and the need to rebuild the team almost from scratch after SAF?
November 9, 2017 at 8:56 am #1555609Interesting set of figures mate, thanks for pulling them together.Given the current state of our squad if 15% average spend is truly to be the norm going forward then I doubt very much whether we will ever be truly competitive again.
At home we have City spending almost as much on three full backs as we spent overall in the summer and in Europe we have PSG spending 400m plus on the two best young forwards in the world!,so how the hell can we compete with that, especially under this horrible ownership regime?.
Of course we might get lucky along the way and unearth another Ronaldo for 12M or another ginger genius through the youth system but given the success rate of our scouting network and how far behind the lack of proper investment in youth development under the Glazers has left us I certainly won’t be holding my breath.November 9, 2017 at 9:23 am #1555627@macguffin. Good thing you are here to collate this data instead of the lazy cunts like me who don’t.
Very interesting numbers. The trend suggests we can expect a ratio of spend to revenue of about 1:5 (a bit less). It’s clear that our managers are hamstrung by the financial performance of the club and that means we have a ceiling while clubs like PSG or Manchester City have no limits.
The numbers say we can never reach the top level again but I think we can if we have a top class manager in the hotseat who is also savvy in the transfer market. I am still convinced that Mourinho is the best candidate but I sense that his frustration will grow over time.
November 9, 2017 at 10:00 am #1555664Interesting indeed! The numbers don’t look good at all. The damn glazers!!!!! Under investment in the fergie days bringing in djemba dgemba Owen Valencia to name but a few when others were buying tevez Robinho etc has left us playing catching up!
However 87-100m can still buy you some game changers it’s not small change! Make the cunts more money maybe ED will release a little more. If we are not competitive on the field then forget offield success hand in hand I’m afraid ED and glazers!!!! You leeches.
November 9, 2017 at 10:01 am #1555665A few more thoughts on financing ……
The Glazers came to talk of a warchest and SAF said the Ronnie money was still available. This makes me wonder if the difference between the 25m pa budget and actual spending went into the warchest, the kitty, which was released when it became clear Moyes successor would not be able to achieve top4 with SAF squad ie the squad needed rebuilding.
This would be the “plan” the club spoke of for the time SAF left. If so, it means the “massive” investment since Moyes is in part money that could and should have been spent under SAF.
And the massive investment coincides with sharp increase in revenue, so its not so much down to Glazer generosity as a by-product of increased TV & sponsorship deals.
The problem is … when the Glazers took over we had a near perfect squad. It just needed maintaining. But every time we went in for a top class signing to maintain overall team quality, the “no value” excuse came out and we ended up with plan B cheaper buys.
Now its different. We are not maintaining an existing strong team. We are building a strong team from a weak team. This means massive spending is needed in the way RA & Mansour had to pump in zillions to upgrade mediocre teams to title winning teams.
The big question is …… if JM can pretty much guarantee top4 with a team like we currently have … will the Glazers go the extra mile or seek to cap spending. I suspect they will and suspect JM is slowly becoming aware and irritated and considering moving to a money-no-problem team like PSG where he can buy whoever he wants to win the CL.
November 9, 2017 at 10:08 am #1555670Blacky-Forget PSG mate, they operate on another stratosphere to everybody else, including Real Madrid and City, plus they just fucked Barca deep and hard with Neymar.Visiting my sister in Germany my brother in law is very close to the hierarchy of Bayern Munich, they are terrified of PSG,they have almost given up hope of winning the CL,crazy stuff!.While we spend £75m on Lukaku, they spend £400m on Neymar and Mbappe,as having Cavani,Pastore,ADM,Moura,Draxler,Guedes,in their ranks was not enough. They are being linked with Coutinho and KDB,we are linked with Perisic[again]!.
November 9, 2017 at 10:10 am #1555671A serial winner Mac whose remit is to keep united in top four contention? Not for me. The club went the extra mile in signing matic at 29 for 40m. I think they are prepared to do it again provided Jose keeps them successful and competing. Number one in Deloitte league but not competing for titles? I don’t think so!!and you said it yourself investment has been agressive recent years but not agressive enough some catastrophic purchases!!!
However Let’s not picture it as complete room and gloom MAC anyone with half a functioning brain cell can see sime dross still needs replacing!

for those are particular about spelling and grammar I got told off by manthistle last time!
November 9, 2017 at 10:55 am #1555703Mac, the following figures, club value plus most value player, denotes further fuel to the fire in that for example City are only around 300mill [ 1/2 transfer windows differentiation ??],in front of United which in itself gives rise to multiple permutations of ifs and whys and whatever, but perhaps on another new thread.
NO 1. MAN CITY 1.196 B [ KDB 145]- NO 5. MAN UTD 919 M [LUKAKU 165]
Estimated transfer value of current squad (not including players loaned or on loan), million €

November 9, 2017 at 11:02 am #1555714Given the figures and the never ending need for yet more income to just tread water, never mind to catch up can anyone else forsee a stadium sponsorship deal in the offing sometime pretty soon?.
Not sure exactly what revenue it would bring in but I can’t believe that the gimps have at least not got the idea on the back burner.November 9, 2017 at 11:11 am #1555724@united_we_win: Yes but I bet the Glazers bullshitted him about the transfer budget never realising JM was a serial-big-spender.
Yes, they did and I bet they will be willing to buy another 29 year old for 40m because it’s easier on the pocket than spending 90m on a midfielder. Matic is the Carrick replacement and like Carrick he will be here until he’s 36.
Have we been competing the past 5 years? And when was the last time we seriously challenged for the CL.
There is dross that’s needed replacing for years but it seems the half-brains were happy to keep them on the payroll. How many of the dross exited last summer? How many do you expect to go this summer?
November 9, 2017 at 11:26 am #1555734Blacky – Abrahomivic is already in talks with Chinese investors for Stamford bridge. So why not the glazier leeches ?
November 9, 2017 at 11:36 am #1555739@blacky – For sure they’d love to do it, it’s a case of how big a riot it would cause. They called the new training ground the Aon Training Complex when they could have just as easily kept it as The Cliff.
I reckon they’ll do it like the John Cleese movie Fierce Creatures. The players are going down the MacDonalds Tunnel stepping onto the Fisons pitch as the crowd in the Heineken tier stand up to cheer and the announcer in the Volkswagen box starts off the singing over the Bang & Olufsen PA system ….. “Hello hello we are the Busby Betfred boys”
November 9, 2017 at 11:39 am #1555744@macguffin. I worry that you are correct, we are headed in that direction the way football is at the minute. The prawn sandwich brigade has well and truly arrived!
November 9, 2017 at 11:40 am #1555745November 9, 2017 at 11:45 am #1555746@emmicallef – Something wrong with that site’s algorithm if Lukaku is valued at 165m Euros. They probably have Jones down for 100m.
November 9, 2017 at 1:19 pm #1555790And Valencia close to what Neymar went for, surely?!
November 9, 2017 at 3:33 pm #1555873Mac sorry to spike your thought but as you can see from below figures the ratings are spot on for the player’s standard.Added Jessi for good measure.
