I think this is a perfect appointment for both sides, Belgium has such a wealth of talent but never played as a team. Martinez gets his players playing as a team but has never managed a team of talented players.

The problem Belgium had with the previous manager was that he is to negative, Martinez will play to their strengths which is to attack.

I don’t often agree with Paxman, but here he’s spot on. Belgium have been like a ship without a captain for years. Martinez will suit them perfectly as he likes to attack. They should have made this appointment straight after the last World Cup, but it’s good for them to have figured this out at last.

Although an upgrade on Wilmots, I don’t think Martinez is the kind of manager they need. They already know how to attack and has talent in abundance. What they lack is the defensive discipline a la Ranieri or Conte. That’s what they need. Can’t think of anyone available except Iceland’s Lagerback. A better choice than RM.

    What’s RM’s cv anyway? Hasn’t achieved anything.

I think at Everton he had a fantastic crop of players to utilise but failed miserably. I expect Everton to be a much stronger force this season under Koeman an I expect Belgium to fail again which is a shame given their ‘golden generation’ of players currently available.

He’s got some very good defenders in his squad, but he had decent defenders in his squad at Everton, and ruined them. He hasn’t got a clue about defensive organisation,he just likes to attack, similar to Brendan Rodgers. Until he works out that he needs to find a balance between defending and attacking,he’ll keep failing, like he’s done in previous jobs

To be fair, he’s been plagued by injuries. only Stones among what would be his best back 4 has amassed more than 30 EPL games.

Bort – off topic, but your name and picture reminded me of my favourite simpsons moment, and made me lol. So I thank you for that on a friday afternoon. We need more Bort license plates in the gift shop, repeat we are sold out of Bort License plates.
