Big article in The Telegraph today, where Ryan Shawcross is whinging about how England overlook players at ‘small clubs’ (his words, not mine) and he seems to have convinced himself that he’d have more than one solitary substitute appearance to his name if he was playing for a bigger club.
I’m not sure that’s true at all – obviously, if you’re at a club competing in Europe and featuring regularly on TV, you get more exposure and are more likely to get noticed, but there are examples of players over the years who have been regulars for their national sides, while not playing for a traditionally big club.
But the reason players at big clubs stand a better chance is because they’re good enough to play for the big clubs in the first place.
What Shawcross should really be asking himself is why he doesn’t play for a big club himself. He wasn’t good enough for Man U, who sold him for the princely sum of £1m and there hasn’t exactly been a queue of European giants lining up each summer for his signature either.
March 23, 2016 at 10:35 am #932603We know.. you don’t like Shawcross..change the record…
March 23, 2016 at 10:53 am #932636Banjo – you’re right, I don’t like Shawcross, but he chose to give the interview, not me and I’m asking a fair question – do players at small clubs get overlooked because they’re at small clubs, or because they’re not good enough to play for bigger ones?
Or should we just accept that all you’re ever going to do on these boards is moan about other posters and talk about your favourite films?
March 23, 2016 at 11:04 am #932666Shawcross has deserved a call up in the past IMO and in recent weeks Noble has been one player that some have said deserves a call up. Drinkwater has earned a call up playing for little Leicester. Would he have been called up if Leicester were mid table?
March 23, 2016 at 1:22 pm #932924Sir Alex Ferguson: “I was delighted to see him called up for the England squad because he is a quality player I have wished – particularly of late – was still at Old Trafford.
“We made the right decision keeping Jonny Evans but I’m not so sure about letting Shawcross join Stoke.”
Is Shawcross world-class? No. Is he unfortunate not to have got more England chances considering the dearth of other world-class English defenders? In my opinion, yes. Would he have got more chances had he stayed and broken through at Man Utd? In my opinion, undoubtedly yes.
March 23, 2016 at 1:30 pm #932933Didn’t Shawcross cite the Ibrahimovic hat trick in the circa 10 minutes he was on the pitch for his only international appearance v Sweden as being the main reason to his lack of further caps?
Personally I think he is a very good centre back who I would happily have at Chelsea. I think he would make an ideal replacement for John Terry.
March 23, 2016 at 1:31 pm #932939On the small/big club debate, Stoke are above Chelsea in the table so should Shawcross be ahead of Cahill in the pecking order? Or, actually, should players be judged on their performances rather than how good their team is?
March 23, 2016 at 1:31 pm #932945if Teo walcott played for west brom, he wouldnt be getting called up for england. The same with jordan henderson
March 23, 2016 at 1:33 pm #932954Nine, yes, he did. It’s a really good interview actually: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2016/03/22/zlatan-ibrahimovic-ended-my-england-career-before-it-had-started/
It’s a bit of a myth that he had a nightmare that night anyway. He was outmuscled by Zlatan for a goal within minutes of coming on, but apart from that he did nothing wrong and wasn’t at fault for any of the other goals. If he really has been overlooked purely because of his performance that night, it’s ridiculous.
March 23, 2016 at 1:33 pm #932957Sean, see Tom Cleverley for proof of that.
March 23, 2016 at 1:42 pm #932987Mark,I think Shawcross is worth more caps than he’s had and I can’t quite understand why he’s only been given 10 minutes.
Had Shawcross been a Chelsea player I suspect he would have had more caps, which as you and Sean have touched on is clearly wrong as players shouldn’t be selected on the basis of who they play for.
March 23, 2016 at 1:48 pm #933008Jonjo Shelvey!!!.And imho,Shawcross has been more or less as good or bad as Jones,
Smalling,Cahill!!!!!!.March 23, 2016 at 1:59 pm #933032red blood: R, Cahill has been struggling since last season at Chelsea and but for the Zouma and Terry injuries wouldn’t even be starting for Chelsea.
March 23, 2016 at 2:00 pm #933035Yeah he probably deserved more call ups than he got but I dont think he (or jagielka for that matter) is anywhere near good enough on the ball for international football. I think that’s why he’s been overlooked by the bigger clubs and england in the past.
March 23, 2016 at 2:03 pm #933038999-They have been dire this season so far, either cos of injuries or bad form.
March 23, 2016 at 2:14 pm #933053Sean – Theo is an excellent example. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of Walcott’s and personally think he’s just been misused by our manager, but a lot of Arsenal fans would disagree with me, let alone anyone else.
When he came to Arsenal in 2006, he was called straight into the England squad for the World Cup before even playing for us – that never would’ve have happened if he was still at Southampton.
I don’t think it’s right that he had to move to a top club to get his call-up and again, many would argue that he’s done little to justify inclusion in any of the England squads since then, but that’s my point – a top club did come in for him and we fought off both Chelski and Man U for his signature.
Whatever SAF said about Shawcross when he sold him, he didn’t try to bring him back and – to my knowledge anyway – no top club has tried to sign him since.
March 23, 2016 at 4:04 pm #933176Banjo – With you on that, read the title and the poster and knew it would be a whinge 🙂
March 23, 2016 at 4:40 pm #933209Pax – Banjo’s an excellent debater with an endless stream of valid and thoughtful contributions to the forum – I don’t think he needs your back up mate 😉
March 23, 2016 at 4:41 pm #9332123 years ago if someone told me the England 2016 squad would potentially be reliant on Kane, Vardy and Ali i’d have laughed in their face. My point being, there are lots of players in the football league and in the less fashionable Premier league teams who are much better than people know and just need the exposure and an opportunity at a higher level.
March 23, 2016 at 4:57 pm #933224To be fair, I don’t think it is particularly a whinge. Shawcross, as Mark says, is not world class, but considering the dearth of decent centre backs in this country and looking at some of the dross that has played centre back for England in recent years, it is surprising he hasn’t had more chances. I hate to bring it up again, but the Ramsey incident didn’t do him any favours, nor did the fact that it was unfashionable mid table Stoke he played for with their Pulis inspired style of play.
In my opinion, he’s far better than Phil Jones, was better than Smalling a year or two ago (not anymore), is now better than Jagielka and maybe even Cahill. 4th choice centre back in an England squad for me!
