So Lads, at long last the season begins. We will need to give our verdict on the summer transfers & Ed’s performance but it’s best if we hold that topic till the window closes.

But lets give our predictions for the season, with reasons preferably. I’ll kick off …

    PL – 4th -5th
    CL – QF
League Cup – Embarassing early round defeat against “lesser” club because JM fields a weak unsettled side and the opposition wanted the win more than we did,
FA Cup – QF – Similar reason to above. We’ll exit against a top 6 team because JM more focused on PL.

In general I think the team does have the overall quality to do well BUT the side is NOT settled. Last seasons signings have not really settled in and consistently performed to a high level. And I think new signings almost always need a season to settle in. The pre-JM players (with the exception of Rashford Martial) seem happy to do the minimum work for the maximum pay. Martial could become a star or go the way of Depay. Rashford could be a star or another Welbeck.

The main issue for me is the lack of midfield creativity. The magic to unlock stubborn defences. Add to this JMs “negative” approach being happy with a second half 1-0 win. I fear opposition can hold out for the 0-0 or a late opposition goal makes it a 1-1. I fear banana skins in the games before CL games.

I think Chelsea City will take the top 2 spots. Liverpool Spurs will be up there because they are more settled as a unit. Arsenal will be Arsenal and bottle it. There will also be a surprise team up there because there normally is.

Let nobody accuse me of sitting on the fence or saying “time will tell”.

League…I think we’ll be Champions. Mourinho to get it right against a weak and inconsistent field.

Cups…a lottery really, we could win the FA Cup playing nobody better than Everton (like two years ago) or draw Chelsea away in the fourth round and go out with a whimper. In Europe I fancy us to run well but fall when we meet a biggie like Madrid BUT I predict there’ll be one glorious result against a favourite. But this is Macguffin’s game and Bangkok rules so I’ll play along.

League Cup…fifth round, out with a whimper.
FA Cup…Quarter final, out on penalties in a classic away at The Emirates. Regrets all round as we were by far the better side.
Champions League…a glorious run to the semi’s. Easy last sixteen tie, (the rags have fixed it again, say the Bertie’s) conquer Juventus in the quarters but get outclassed by Madrid in the semi final.

    A good season all round.

Premier league – 1st to 3rd, within around 8 to 10 points of the title. Optimist in me will say 1st! I think Spurs will be handicapped by Wembley. Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea are no better than last season and will have additional European commitments. Man City, who knows, if it clicks for Guardiola they could walk away with it, could equally implode and go horribly wrong of the defence is as suspect as I think it is.
Mourinho to surprise himself and get to the league cup final with a ‘reserve’ team.
Total cockup in the fa cup with same reserve team, out in the 3rd round to lower team.
CL – Easy group and last 16 draw will see us being knocked out in the 1/4s by PSG

PL-4th,just not enough quality in the team to mount a title challenge, hope to be proved wrong!
Domestic cups are a lottery case, anything could happen!
CL-Through to the last 16 then knocked out by a team like Juve,PSG,Dortmund,Atletico Madrid!

So unpredictable isn’t it? What a start to the season it’s been, goals going in from everywhere – sets us up nicely for a fantastic 0-0 at OT this afternoon!!

I think we’re going to win it! I’d like us to add another player but I think Mourinho knows what it takes to win the league. Normally takes him a year to identify what he needs, then it all falls into place.
We’ll go far in all the cups as well, semis for FA and hopefully semis for CL.
Ohh and finally, Rooney will score 25 goals for Everton!!! ??

league position: before the first game i was certain we wouldnt get in the top four. now, after one game, i am positive we will win the league. the reason that i can’t hold onto that fantasy is because we dont have players who can come in when others get injured. the team jose picked is about as good as it can be (except i’d like to give shaw a 4th or 5th last chance, and keep blind well away from the side. so while my heart says 1st, my head tells me we wont get above city who i think will win it, nor chelsea who will come second. liverpool i thought would come in 3rd but with coutinho leaving i see them finishing 5th now, with spurs, whilst still a good team, finishing only 4th because of a lack of transfers, and rose probably now leaving. so i’ll say 3rd in the league, but not more than 10 points off the winners.

domenstic cups: couldnt give a monkeys

champions league: battered by PSG in the 1/4 after an easy last sixteen tie that we scape through.

PL – Expecting a Top Four finish this year, perhaps even 2nd.

Domestic Cups – we might win one of them however if we come up against Top Six opposition away from home I suspect that we’ll be knocked out.

CL – Round of 16 against a very strong side and will be knocked out; it won’t be embarassing but it will be a difference of class (sort of like the Super Cup).

    well here goes…
    PL: winners
League cup: winners with our reserve team
FA cup: knocked out in the first round
CL: we get too cocky after beating Barca in the quarters only to be battered by Real in the semis

Lukaku top scorer and mikhi top assists….Pogba and Lukaku both contenders for PFA with Pogba winning the PFA 2018, despite getting knocked out in the semi finals Martial finishes top scorer in the Champions League…*fingers crossed*

    #1518311

Wow libanski, that’s a really REALLY hopeful scenario you put there! Lukaku may end up top scorer if we have a good season but I’d bet my car on neither Pogba winning POTY or Martial finishing top scorer of CL!

Don’t forget libanski is the wise sage that predicted 4-0 on Sunday. I’m watching his predictions very carefully from now on.

Plus it all depends on what Symnpathy’s car is – he might drive an old fiat panda!

    #1518428

@happyhurling – 2011 Honda Civic, so I reckon it’s OK for a bet =) but I can’t see Martial getting more than a handful of goals in the Champions League this year, let alone outscoring Messi or Ronaldo!

Seen the team and the other teams, and I don’t think there looks to be another major addition in this transfer window, so, prediction:

Premiership: 1st. – We look good and have the tools at our disposal to win different type of games when required. It’s Jose’s second season, so you can assume we’ll be competitive, and I’m quietly confident that we’ll be signing Griezmann and Ibrahimovic in January, so that will be a boost. Man City are the main rivals for the league this season, and I just don’t believe Pep will win the Premiership (simply because I really hope that the Premiership proves he’s not the god people believe he is).

Champion’s League: Quarter Finals or Semi Finals – All the cup games are a bit of a lottery. We could get shafted in the group stages and not even qualify, but I think we’re good enough to have a strong showing and with Mourinho in a two legged tie, we have every chance. However, when we come up against Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, Bayern Munich or PSG, I’d imagine we’ll come up short.

FA Cup: Quarter Finals – It won’t be Jose’s priority this season. A top two finish in the league and reaching the latter stages of the Champions League would be deemed more of a successful season rather than winning any of the domestic cups, so when the fixtures start piling up in March, our FA Cup campaign will suffer.

League Cup: Quarter Finals – Players will be rested for the Champions League group stage matches, so when we come up against a strong team, I think we’ll be knocked out. I have a feeling it’ll be Everton (Rooney) who will knock us out of one of the cups, so maybe this will be the one.

Premier League: Top 4. We’ve made a good start to the season, but I’ve got concerns about squad depth and how well a team that’s fairly new will cope with adversity. If we’re in for the crown, we need a season with few injuries at minimum. I’d be a lot more comfortable if we added a few new relevant faces.

CL: Usually, JM is a strong cup manager (CL with both Porto and Inter, Europa League with United etc.) and this’ll be a priority. With some luck in the draw, we could make the last four.

League Cup: I don’t care all that much; no relevant thoughts on the matter.

F.A. Cup: I don’t think it’ll be Mourinho’s priority. For this reason, an unlucky draw could see us leave the tournament early.
