@happy – Don’t be a prize tit all your life mate,it was the likes of you who was trying to build Jones up into something he plainly he is not, just because he had done well in 3 easy games where even William Prunier could have smoked a fucking cigar for 90 minutes.
My judgement of him is based on 7 generally piss poor seasons during which time he has always lapsed into moments of comedic chaos just like he did yesterday. As for him ever having “10 very good games in a row” don’t make me laugh,it’s never happened yet and it never will. This particular leopard is never going to change his spots, simple as that.
PS Maybe he just hasn’t had enough time yet to “settle in”,hehehe!.

@wonderfuel gas. It’s fair enough that we can’t win every game and that we are not without fault just like every other team but I must say that yesterday’s draw was more of a defeat than anything. The defending was surprisingly shocking and the finishing was not up to scratch with Rashford and Lukaku culpable.

I am not saying that I have lost faith or anything to that effect because I still believe we have a very strong outfit here; the point still stands, however, that if we want to win this league we have to dispatch teams like Stoke with ease – home and away.

@zico. Calm down ol’bean. You seem a little disheveled there mate. Your opinions on Mourinho are questionable at best.

Oh, me and Marouane are keeping our eye on things redblood. Just decided to let everyone else have their say for a while without me coming out with ludicrous comments like Jones is an oaf, we need two full backs, our midfield isn’t good enough and Valencia is shite. You know, nonsense like that mate.

@zico. Fair enough mate hahahaha! Mourinho is a worldclass moaner and a sore loser no doubt. It’s part of the package though. In my opinion he is still a brilliant manager – I would go as far as saying he is the best in the world. I will accept his faults along with his virtues.

Slap in the face ? Hughes clearly says F off to Jose when he encroached the technical area even I would tell Hughes to swivel after the game.

Jose was well within his rights to ignore him at the end ;since when do managers start pushing and shoving and telling their opposite number to F off. Stop blaming Jose all the time Zico.

    @happyhurling:

“Blacky – the problem with you Jones criticism is that you completely ignore the games where he plays really well. If he played 10 very good games in a row you would not say 1 word about him. As soon as he has a shaky game then you’re all over him with the “I told you he was crap”.

Your point seems fair at first glance, Happy, but as I read Blacky’s remark, I don’t consider it an overly harsh judgement based on one game. Jones’ performance in that game is a piece of information that you analyze and interpret into a larger picture. With Jones, that picture is quite large since he’s been with United for a good few years. And the piece of information we got from the Stoke game substantiates a developing conclusion that’s become seemingly clear over the last few years: That Jones isn’t good enough for United.

You’re quite right that when he has a good game, that piece of information should be added to the interpretation of the bigger picture as well. However, in my opinion, there isn’t thus far enough “good game”-pieces of information to reach a different conclusion.

If you are to properly assess any player, you need to develop some sort of frame work, or at least be mindful of a yard stick by which to rate them. What sort of yard stick are you using when it comes to Jones? A generic CD who is good enough to be first choice for a club like Man United? Vidic and Ferdinand, perhaps? Whether or not, when you see him in the line up, you get a sense of security – a good feeling that he’ll be dependable and make the right choices 8-9 out of 10 times?

At present, I’m very concerned (if that’s the right term) with what MacGuffin labels “the standard United require” in his response to you. That is and has for some time (I guess, since SAF left) been an extremely important notion to me. United is a certain type of club. We should, season after season, mount serious challenges for the Premier League and the Champions League. That’s where I want us to be. That’s where I think we should be. That’s the United standard. And that’s the yard stick by which I judge any player – and any decision made at this club.

So, to that end: Is Jones a player that can help us return to the highest tier of World football where we mount serious challenges in both PL and CL? For me, the pieces of information that Jones has provided us with since he joined makes the answer to that question a clear no.

Also, to respond directly to the bolded quote: I don’t think it’s entirely reasonable to fault Blacky, or anyone for that matter, if they don’t say a word when Jones plays 10 good games in a row. To the best of my recollection, that has never happened.

Charlie Adams’ comments are interesting. He’s claiming that Stoke used Pogba’s poor positional sense to isolate Matic and get in behind us. At first I thought he had a point but didn’t Pogba play as part of a 3 man midfield with Herrera too?

When you look at the game on Saturday you have to take into account that it was a game of nearlys and almosts, positional lapses and Jones falling on his arse.
Valencia completely lost Chupa Chups for the first goal, showing again that although he is a good player and decent on the wing he does not have the positional sense to be the regular starting right back for Utd, especially at set pieces. He’s a good player and definitely adds depth to the squad but we need a natural right back and he isn’t one. The second goal was unlucky and abject at the same time. Jones falling on his arse could be deemed unlucky but it is one of a number of ‘unlucky’ moments Phil Jones has experienced in his Utd career. It will definitely be interesting to see how Lindelof will do against Basle on Tuesday, as we need people to be challenging for places.
On the plus side we saw DDG make a truly world class save against Jese, watching the former Real Madrid/PSG player shake his head in disbelief was testament to the quality of the save.
Then Lukaku missed a sitter, he also scored one though.
Stoke is perennially a very tough place to go, even the best teams find it hard and they are definitely a better team this year than last, Butland is back from long term injury, Shawcross, Wimmer, Martins Indi in defence, Fletcher in midfield and Jese and Choupo Moting in attack have significantly improved their squad. It’s easy to say that this was a bad result but it remains to be seen how other big teams do against them in the Potteries. It’s early days still, not time to panic yet but there are signs that there still needs to be significant investment in the squad again next summer before we can compete for the League AND the Champions League.

It’s time for Lindelof to step up and show what he is about. Enough of this Phil fucking Jones already. The first real test of the season and he falls flat on his face when it mattered. It was always going to be a matter of time before the real Phil Jones showed up. Bailly had his worst game in a United shirt which was obvious from the 1st few minutes of the game when he tried to play off side instead of going to the ball. Switch the hell on man. The defence will probably let the team down this season. You can’t be scoring 2 goals away at Stoke and not come away with 3 points. 2 points dropped but it sure as hell felt like a defeat.

Can Messi do it on a cold Tuesday night at Stoke? A question asked over and over again. Give some credit to Stoke, they made it difficult for United and shared the points. Think you’ll find lots of teams will struggle at Stoke like most years. Still defensively we should’ve been better

Unusually, compared to last season, our defence lost us the points, and our attack got them. Last year it was the other way around. Lets hope it’s not a pattern and we’ll still be up there come May….

According to a BBC mythbusting article Messi could do it. Personally I don’t believe it though. He could score but I doubt he could pull a magical rabbits out of the hat.
