Whereas I agree that our signing Paul Pogba would be a surprise, this is not because we cannot offer Champions League football. The CL can only offer SIX matches for certain (and then two of which are against teams that would struggle in our FA Championship) whereas, sold appropriately, the Premier Zleague offers 38 matches in the most competitive, exciting league around. Chelsea also offers London lifestyle. Comparing the two does not compute. Several players may not fancy Chelsea on any one of several levels but unless the CL team has a realistic chance of staying in the competition beyond Christmas I do not see the lure. In Pogba’s case his signing for us would be a surprise because he has ambition to join Barcelona….a club which checks all of the CL boxes, mainly the one of almost assured post-Christmas participation. Would you sign for (say) Zenit rather than Chelsea just because the Russian club is in the CL?

Agree fully with your post. Though as you mention although Leicester or Tottenham may not be able to attract the calibre of players who have ambitions to win the the CL, there are teams in other countries like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Bayern Munich, PSG, Dortmund who do fulfill those ambitions and as there are not many players of Pogba’s calibre around I just don’t see why he would pick Chelsea over any of the teams stated (and lets face it all those teams would want him) unless he really wants to play in England.
June 2, 2016 at 5:37 pm #1046738Completely agree, Bort. But the lure of the teams you name is their reputation not the CL….although I do agree that their qualification for the CL is virtually guaranteed. However, isn’t that what we thought about Chelsea? I think that the corollary to my post is that, were I a thinking footballer, I would choose club over competition.
Just a minor point. Those who know me from past contributions would confirm, I’m sure, that I would not disrespect Leicester City or Tottenham Hotspur by suggesting that they might not attract players…indeed, both might. But it comes back to what I said above: the reputation of each club would be paramount in a players mind and any with a working knowledge of their football history would probably pick, regardless of CL qualification, the club that attracted Ardiles and Villa and bred Hoddle. Then again the former Barcelona player Gary Lineker started life at Leicester City and there’always Gordon Banks…so you never know!June 2, 2016 at 6:29 pm #1046813I get the feeling this is going to be another slow summer acquiring players. I know it’s early but I just get that feeling contrary to reports.
You know deep down Chelsea don’t really learn from lessons because the board is pretty incompetent.
June 2, 2016 at 7:59 pm #1046924bort, not sure about that mate seemingly we’ve hit a brick wall on a couple of deals but seemingly there are potentially a couple quite close.
Getting deals over the line is never easy because it takes all three parties to agree and often the players we are chasing are bring chased by our competitors too.
On the positive side we seem to have identified 2/3 players for the positions we are looking to strengthen which is an improvement on last summer.
But as always the proof of the pudding will be in the eating. Cheers 999
June 3, 2016 at 10:25 am #1047590The transfer market this time around will be a minefield. There are very few decent players and you have probably all of the top 6 plus us looking to improve their squads and if any of the press reports are true each player is being targeted by at least 3 clubs…?
Everyone knows that the EPL clubs will be doing this and that there is money to burn
For me, this is why Chelsea are saying nothing and attempting to keep as low a profile as possible so as not to alert any of our competition whom we are chasing (any way I hope that’s what is happening…!!). KTBFFH
June 3, 2016 at 1:55 pm #10480261905, I agree with you too few quality players with too many fishing in the same shallow pond and the Euros will be a hindrance too!
Benteke@£20m???? If Lukaku can’t be got for sensible money???
Hopefully if true it’s as back up to Costa??? Cheers 999

ST – CostaJune 3, 2016 at 3:14 pm #104818899: I would disagree as my feeling says Benteke is not good enough, but my logic says that Benteke will still be improvement from Rémy and Pato (as you said: as long as it;s as backup to Costa).
June 3, 2016 at 3:16 pm #1048200I think you can see from the way the Shortlist is shaping up we are going for about 5 players and are looking hard at Centre Backs, Centre Mids and Strikers
June 3, 2016 at 3:17 pm #1048203I’m more and more perplexed with the rumors concerning Chelsea: Candreva, Lichsteiner, Asamoah Gyan: all almost 30 years old or even older. Worrying IMO, I have impression that we’ll repeat last summer where we could not reach our main targets and had to settle with Falcao, Djilobodji, Baba etc. And the trend seems to repeat again, what I read: Nainggolan rejected, Koulibaly rejected by Napoli, Higuain would prefer Liverpool, etc etc. Sorry if I sound too pessimistic.
June 3, 2016 at 3:29 pm #1048230Aindro my twitter feed is curated to football and transfer news, Gyan and has only been rumoured by one source so far. Until more rumours sufface it’s just nonsense.
I missed Candreva off the list dammit!

believe a word the media write these days.1st,no Italian team are able to resist/reject
big offers, for any player,in Spain there are only Real and Barca,in Germany only Bayern,
in France only PSG,so there are so many players Chelsea could sign.Remember what LCFC
did, without spending astronomical on players. You have been linked with the likes of
Pjanic,Mkhtyrian[spe],Koke,Lacazette,Saul,Neves, and few more. The focus now has to on
youth mate, for almost everybody.June 3, 2016 at 4:14 pm #1048338bort: Candreva link just appeared this morning (Eastern Standard Time), 20m. He is 29, plays in Lazio. What’s ur twitter?
redblood: no worries, mate. Always fun to talk about football (soccer here 😉 ) with fellow fans from any club. I don’t believe Chelsea would have that many choices, world class players would prefer to sign for clubs playing UCL. And with financial FFP rules, Chelsea should not spend astronomically neither, so we have to be very wise in spending. I also can see Mou with Man Utd can attract so many good players, so smaller and smaller market for Chelsea.
