March 15, 2017 at 8:27 am #1450771rumours of Grujic going out on loan, if true i would prefer he stays in England maybe huddersfield if they get promoted
March 15, 2017 at 10:56 am #1450892Probably a bit early for a thread like this as a lot can happen in the next few months. If players come into form then they will be kept and other players will drop form and we will all want them shipped out asap. The one thing for certain is that we need quality in defense
March 15, 2017 at 12:30 pm #1450950Liverpool is a really weird club, just a few years ago we were hours from being in serious financial trouble, and now we are one of the top ten richest team in the world. However money had been misspent and we probably need to spend 150-200million pounds to sort out the team.
In order of importance…
Centre back —Van Dijk 50 million
Any top class striker 50 million minimum
Top class left defender – 15-25 million
Dynamic mid — Naby Keita 35-50 million
Top defensive midfielder – 20-40 million
Too class Pacy winger – 20-40 million
Top Goalkeeper – 10 -25 millionThat’s just a rough list but it’s easy to see that the cost could end up into 200milkion. Of course we could do money ball tactics but that hasn’t really worked because the scouting and recruiting team at Liverpool is not as good as other teams such as Sevilla, Dortmund, Southampton, Leipzig, Tottenham. However you could argue that were rubbish at spending big money too lol
But since Klopp had been there we’ve been good with transfers so I expect intelligent purchases wether they are Kwick save or Waitrose.
March 15, 2017 at 1:43 pm #1451003I dont think we should go for Van Dijk, its just another example of signing the flavour of the month. There are thousands of defenders out there and we should be able to find a few that are good value for less money. We dont need flamboyant defenders, we need solid defenders and there are plenty out there in other leagues.
March 15, 2017 at 2:02 pm #1451019That may be true gibbo, is just that recent history shows we haven’t been great at the money ball tactic and we don’t have a good enough scouting system unfortunately either. There’s no way we could afford to spend 200million in one season I think it’s more realistic to say two seasons, obviously supplemented by player sales..
Sime people think that because of Klopp we are going to essily get great players on the cheap… Klopp didn’t do the bulk of the scouting it was Dortmund’s world renowned scouting team that got them the players he coached and even now they have recently accuired two of the best young players in the world in Pullisic and Dembele. You could argue that Emre Can and Sterling were the last two good young players that we sourced but unfortunately one left and the other might be following him.
Hence why why I think we should shelve Moneyball for a while and aim for the top young and experienced talent, both cost money… Hence the 200 million valuation.
March 15, 2017 at 2:48 pm #1451056Yeah some good points there, but youth is very risky. Its very easy to look back and say ‘we should have gone for X, Y or Z player cos look at them now’ but for every gem of a player there are probably 100 duds.
Its all about the scouting and looking for good solid players around 23 – 25 years of age so you can get them when they are approaching their prime. Easier said than done but that would be my preferred approach.
I think when Sami Hyypia signed it really stood out in my mind as he was only 3 million and came as a surprise but he was top drawer as a solid defender.
March 15, 2017 at 3:07 pm #1451064Agreed gibbo on the risk, but I think there’s always risk regardless what strategy you use. I feel, what matters is what intelligent pre planning and systems you have in place. The better the system the less likely the duds. Unfortunately we haven’t made good decisions on the seemingly spontaneous transfer decisions and we are trying to untangle ourselves from our botched longterm scouting and academy implementations…
Despite what you read in the newspapers our scouting network and transfer committee isn’t very good. If they were that good they wouldn’t have given Southampton nearly 100 milkion in 3 years… Klopp at the club now will influence things, I know some people were up in arms about Klopp getting a six year contract but I think we need that so we can actually see out a long term strategy… Even better would be a director of football, ironically maybe Southamptons DOF Les Reed would be a good bet. He’s seen at least three or four Southampton managers come and go and still Southampton churn out good young players and sign bargains.
I think we can get away with signing a top class striker, centre and left defender this summer, any thing more would be valuable bonus.
March 15, 2017 at 4:11 pm #14510953 players is probably not enough as we will have more games next year. If we can get in cl then we may need more to allow for reasonable rotation. Also let’s not forget who will leave, lucas sakho maybe Stewart and sturridge. Therefore we will be left light with just 3 players coming in
March 15, 2017 at 4:32 pm #1451106I don’t see losing Sakho as making us any lighter next season. He hasn’t played for us all of this year and so losing him makes little difference to the squad. Sorry kind of splitting hairs with that comment but, as much as I agree we need to sign more quality players to bulk up the first team squad, they need to be the right players and personally I don’t think we want a bloated squad. Hopefully a couple youth players stake their claim for the squad filler positions. To be honest, any comments if we need to spend £x on this position and £x on another position are also a bit “wishful”. You’re right on positions we need to strengthen but transfer values don’t correlate to the success of each transfer and Klopp and FSG are known for wanting value in deals, so don’t get your hopes up in early march about £200mil “war chests” – it ain’t happening!
March 15, 2017 at 4:40 pm #1451110Hi Ian, I’m with you on the 200mill issue with regard to the owners just a handing that kind of cash out of their pockets, it will not happen…. However, there is sizable money to be spent over two summers. We could quite feasibly spend 100 million every summer supplemented by player sales, I think I club of this size would be able to manage that.
March 15, 2017 at 7:04 pm #1451151I don’t think its realistic to think we’ll spend 200M. I’m not sure how significant being one of the 10 richest clubs in the world is, how is this even measured…considering we lost nearly 20M in the last financial year.
March 15, 2017 at 7:42 pm #1451158Your right about the finances frerbilli, isn’t the msinstand costs part of the reason for that? I guess that’s why the Chinese takeover tumours refuse to die. We don’t look in too bad a shape financially but looking at it its easy to see why Chelsea, mancity, and man it’s are the main winners of the league in the last ten years… That’s why I think we need to invest seriously in academy and scouting system even more. It’s impossible to compete in a financial shootout with those big teams. I know I’m evangelicalising a little here lol but I really do think that if we had Southamptons style setup we would be able to hold onto players better than they could/have and in the process be more able to compete with the richer clubs.
March 15, 2017 at 8:14 pm #1451173As FSG policy seems to be buy them young with potential then Brandt fits the bill. Jury is out on Van Dijk but we should be looking at Mbappe, Sessegnon and his brother, Donarumma (excuse spelling) the AC Milan keeper and Tierney from Celtic. Add a player who brings a bit of bite to midfield and we are set for the next 5-10 years. But it won’t happen, doubt we will even be linked with let alone buy one of the above.
March 15, 2017 at 8:35 pm #1451181Really like tierney. Aggressive in the tackle and good on the ball. Still a bit raw but only 19.
March 16, 2017 at 9:51 am #1451354Reportedly Bayern are now interested in signing Brandt.
Admittedly the source to this story is BILD but Bayern have been interested previously and its would hardly be surprising if they were interested again.
Have we made a mistake in not pushing thru his signing in Jan?
Apparently he has a buy out clause of £10.9 mil this summer.
Could this be the reason why we have waited?March 16, 2017 at 4:53 pm #1451672Some good shouts St Etienne! Well I watched Leverkusen go out to in Champions League last 16 and that reminded me of Jonathan Tar the hipsters choice for young centre back at LFC. He is only 21 but has a long history in the german league and CL. History wise you could liken him to the German John Stones but he is much different player physically, hes definately has a physical . He could be a much cheaper alternative to Van Dijk and would obviously be a great future defender with aslo young Gomez.
Ginger I hope we haven’t missed out on Brandt for a low price…that’d be a disaster! But obviously if his agent has been talking to Munich then we had no chance anyways. However what does this say about our negotiation team? Surely we could have at least put on the charm and feelers out…Thats what the best transfer teams like Munich, Dortmund and Sevilla etc do.
Look at what highly regarded Dembele said of Dortmund’s recruitment tactics even though he was wanted by Europe’s elite clubs including Barcelona, Munich and Arsenal:
I had a lot of offers, but I made it clear right from the start that I was only interested in joining Dortmund. I knew right away that I only wanted Dortmund,’ Dembele told Sport Bild. The way they showed an interest in me and gave me the feeling they really wanted me convinced me to join them. I have had a lot of meetings with head coach Thomas Tuchel since Dortmund first got in touch in the winter. I am convinced he is the right coach to help me develop. Dortmund are the perfect club for young players, the past has shown that. I cannot wait to play my first game for Dortmund in front of the home fans.
Sometimes it’s about the charm offensive I’m not so sure Liverpool’s recruitment team is so good at that. I shudder when I think we could have signed Dele Ali but then Gerrard was asleep. Gerrard was probably taking a quick nap from having to carry the team AND club as usual lol…But again things are changing I think we are getting better and will continue to improve, we didnt do too badly this summer with transfers…
