Yeah see that’s slightly more reasonable than your original post. I’m not saying we’ve unlimited transfer funds, we don’t. But to say we won’t get money from the yanks just isn’t true. We’ve got plenty of money from them in the last few windows. And he’s got rid of a lot of deadwood. The problem is you see the whole squad as deadwood so there’s no real starting point is there?
I also disagree that we have protracted transfers to get players on the cheap. Did we get Pogba on the cheap? No.
    Was Lindelof protracted?
Problem is that you will quite easily discard any facts that don’t support your agenda.

He’s got to sort out that left hand side of the pitch for me….can’t keep playing Darmian there. Despite his nice cross for the opening goal he just looks wrong out left and the less said about Blind’s games in America, Norway and Ireland the better. Which leaves us with Luke Shaw, who Mourinho treated like the leprosy virus last year and without a pre season can’t really be considered till October. Feeling quite optimistic with the rest of the pitch, this just seems a bit of a blind spot for the team, pardon the pun.

    jm1502 and happyhurling,

The Glazers aren’t Yanks, they are Jews. Just FYI.

CR – their nationality is American, you know, yanks, their ethnicity is Jewish, just for your lack of information mate.

Happy, I reckon we have about 150 mill to spend each summer, tops. Last year we spent 90 on Pogba and about 30 each on Miki and Bailly. I think Mourinho probably wanted more players but there was no more money, so he brought in the relatively cheap Zlatan option. This year we’ve bought Lukaku for, let’s say 80, Lindelof for 30 and Matic for 40. That’s our 150 done. But because we unloaded Schneiderlin and Memphis in Jamuary, and Januzaj this summer, I reckon there may be another signing left in the kitty. If we don’t buy anyone else, our net spend will have been about 100 mill. In Citeh terms, that’s two full backs. As for protracted, we were haggling with Madrid over our second choice striker for weeks before we eventually bought our third choice, we were linked with Lindelof for almost 12 months before finally buying him, and we’ve been negotiating the price of Perisic all summer after, apparently, being put off by the price of Fabinho. And yes mate, I think there’s still plenty of deadwood.

    jm1502 mate,

Yes of course I know their nationality is American, on paper. Just like how if I moved to Somalia and did the necessary paperwork to get a Somali citizenship I wouldn’t be Somalian in any meaningful way other than on paper. Culture and ethnicity weigh more heavily than a piece of paper. So it wouldn’t make sense to call me Somalian.

If you say so CR, er I mean Somalian.

By the way, in my last post, I meant to saying negotiating all summer for Perisic, and buying Matic for 40 million after, apparently, being put off by the price of Fabinho.

If you believe everything you read in the papers that is.
I’m quite happy with the summer transfer business. Added to that Miki has looked very sharp in preseason as has Rashford and Pogba. I think we’re going to be a force this season. Just hope Lukaku hits the ground running and Martial can nail down the left wing slot. And we still have a fantastic player in Juana Mata who will have a big role to play too – next weekend can’t come soon enough!

@JM… We weren’t put off by the price for Fabinho. Monaco didn’t want to sell. Milan offered them more then us, player refused and Monaco laughed them off. We were prepared to pay their asking price, but Monaco wouldn’t budge. They saw Bakayoko as more dispensable then Fabinho.
Anyways, I can’t imagine how you must have felt when you saw the Sampdoria equalizer. Carrick being almost pedestrian in tracking Praet who scored because Smalling decided to go down and allow him the space to shoot, while Smalling was smack in front of DDG…..

Can only imagine the amount of uncensored superlatives u threw out Lol ???

    redblood,

That’s possible, I don’t know where the present day Glazers were born. But if an English woman gives birth to a child while on vacation in Spain her child is still English, is my point. And if that child decides to stay in Spain while retaining his or her British identity and loyalty, then his or her children will in turn also be English.

Happy to see that Perisic, if signed, will not be a replacement of Martial, judging by JMs recent statements. I think he could very useful as a left wing-back. He has the defensive discipline+work rate and would feed a lot of crosses to Lukaku. If he’s too expensive then we should just sign another, similar player.

    FIRST ELEVEN (5-3-2)
    Martial Lukaku

    Pogba Matic Herrera

    Perisic Smalling Lindelöf Bailly Valencia

    DDG

    SECOND ELEVEN (4-3-1-2)
    Rashford Mkhitaryan

    Mata

    Pereira Carrick TFM

    Shaw Jones Rojo Darmian

    Romero

If you’re happy happy, then I’m happy for you. Let’s just get next week’s Super Cup out of the way, then we can make our predictions for the coming season. In fact, I’m prepared to make mine now, despite the transfer window remaining open. Still no, maybe a new thread next week before the season starts eh?

And Fax Machine, I said that we were “apparently” put off by Fabinho’s price. I’m just going off what I read in the papers just like everyone else. You, on the other hand, sound like you’ve got insider knowledge, particularly at Monaco. As for the Sampdoria game, I thought Matic was excellent. Other than that, I saw little to distinguish us from last season.

Struggling for top four happy as you rightly predicted (probably you’re only correct prediction), maybe a couple of decent cup runs, maybe not, who knows with the cup. Lukaku, whilst not my ideal type of centre forward, will score 20+ goals, thereby replacing Zlatan, Matic will do what Carrick has been doing but better, and Lindelof, well who knows how Lindelof will pan out. But you never know, maybe Gareth Bale will make the difference.
