I note in the Telegraph that Levy believes that the transfer fees being paid are simply unsustainable. In other words someone’s going to go broke. He is reported as saying: “Our position on transfers is that we have a coach who very much believes in the academy, so unless we can find a player that makes a difference we would rather give one of our young academy players a chance.

“The academy is important because if we produce our own players we don’t have to spend £20m or £30m on a player.

“An academy player has that affinity with the club and that’s what the fans want to see.”

I think the top 4 teams have got to start using this strategy. What do others think?

First…if a EPL team goes broke that will be down to bad managemet and no EPL team should be in this position. A football club has to be financially sound. A team may be relegated should not be relegated and broke as in previous seasons. They can re build to return. The top teams will always buy, Spurs have done well but by the same yardstick that is not sustainable either (home grown talent) Only a small percentage of Academy players will make it…that has to be accepted and this will only change if the squads are alloed to increase in size say from 25 to 30 to cover all competitions
