As we head towards the business end of the season I am happy as to where we are but not really sure that there is much more to come from us as a team. Garry Monk suggests that there is still progress that will emerge but I am skeptical given what I perceive as an overachieving squad. Other teams seem to be powering up. This is where some team or other gets onto an unbelievable run of form to reach the pinnacle. Can it be us? Realistically I’d say it is unlikely but who knows? Stranger things have happened.

The Birmingham City game is now the beginning of a list of “must win” fixtures with a wary eye on what the others around us are doing. In essence, our final destiny is not completely in our hands.

For the game I hope that Charlie Taylor will be able to come into the team at the expense of Berardi. Berardi is a wholehearted player that has got stuck in admirably and, now that he has moderated his wildness, is a useful squad player but Taylor gives us much more. O’Kane has come in for some stick from sections of the Leeds United crowd but he is a very skillful player with lovely feet and he should be retained. Sacko should be replaced by Dallas who, since he seems good for 60 minutes only, should share the burden with young Vieira. I would also keep Doukara in the team with perhaps Pedraza Sag and Barrow to get some playing time; Roofe, in my view, is rapidly dropping down the pecking order. The rest of the team should be as was against Sheffield Wednesday. I’d get shot of Calamity Cooper from the bench and put Lewie Coyle in and also think about putting one of the young strikers on stand-by.

Just from that you can see the limitations of available options.

I am hopeful that we will prevail in this match by a single goal. I am looking forward to it.

I do wish that there is more contribution and threat in terms of goals from midfield although there is very little evidence that that is likely.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hello Phoenix

I watched Brighton against Newcastle on television the other night and I have to say that, based on that game, there’s a massive chasm between us and those two front-runners. It’s, somewhat, ominous that we have to face them both in the run-up to the league campaign. The truth of the matter is that we are short on quality in the vital midfield areas, irrespective of the permutations that Monk chooses.

If there’s some consolation, it’s in the fact that the Brummies have been in free fall since the sacking of Gary Rowett. The worrying factor is that Zola always seems to “do one over us” (Chelsea and Watford). I can see us struggling if we reproduce the same mediocre performance which we served up against the Wendies: on the back foot and struggling to create goal scoring opportunities. Once Hernadez is locked up, there’s very little happening. With Bridcutt and O’Kane (Vieiera) spending the majority of the time protecting the back four and the wingers largely anonymous, it’s becoming all too predictable. Clever opposition managers will be reading us like a book.

The tactics may be re-imagined and re-invented but it’s going to be another slog. We just do NOT have adequate quality as an attacking force. We could nick another early goal from Wood and then depend, once again, upon the overworked defence to carry the donkey load in securing three points? We’re a long way off from three and four goal romps. Hardly exciting to watch.

I’m a big fan of O’Kane – a player who keeps the ball ticking over. Doesn’t do anything fancy, but is exactly the calming presence you need in there. Much like Carrick at you-know-who…
Taylor to return to at Birnmingham too, so I have to be confident of us getting a draw at worst… Cheers

Well the general feeling seems to be that whereas we go into matches hoping for a win, the front-runners expect to do so. Still I remain pleased with the fact that, although we are not playing that well, we are in decent stead and hopefully that progress will continue. Sure beats the rubbish we were putting up with last season scrapping to stay away from the bottom of the league.

There was a false dawn for some people with that display against Derby County. Good as it was, the fact of the matter is that Derby had a very bad day at the office and Steve McLaren made a complete horlicks of his team formation concentrating as he did with attack and leaving his midfield so light that it was overrun.

Anyway, looking forward to a decent game of football tonight (well I can hope!) and us coming away with three points.
