Leicester are top of the league having been bottom last season. If they put together another winning run they can win it. Will Chelsea, Utd, City, Arsenal be as poor next season or will they be back to their best with the likes of Guardiola & Mourinho possibly taking over one or two of them? The league is more open for 1st time premiership winner than it was when we almost won it in 2013/14. I honestly feel if we are thinking about sacrificing this season for a push next season we will end up regretting it. It won’t be easier next season, it will be harder. If we can’t win it I hope Leicester can but arent we all tired of saying next season? YNWA
December 28, 2015 at 1:37 pm #760568Sanj,I understand where you’re coming from,I do,but we’re too inconsistent in the league, and until we sort that out,I can see our domestic season petering out to be honest. Saying that, our knack of picking up injuries nearly every match is killing us too it has to be said. I feel top 4, although still mathematically possible,is probably not going to happen for us this year, and our best bet is probably in the cups. January will be interesting, but I can’t see the calibre of player Klopp would want joining us in January. The window might be a bit hit and miss for us. I think Klopp will need the summer window to sort the squad out,and maybe next season,we will start to see a better, more consistent Liverpool team. While he’s working with the (largely) dross full squad that Rodgers left him with,I think the rest of the season may pass by in a similar fashion as the first half. I feel we may have to play a waiting game to be honest. We need to keep Sturridge fit to have any chance of doing something in the league,as Benteke is too inconsistent, and the likes of Firmino just go missing, and let’s be honest, given his injury record, that’s hardly likely to happen is it?
December 28, 2015 at 7:40 pm #761363I have to say right now, I’m a bit annoyed we have now dropped to 10th in the table.
It’s as if we need to be winning a good 4 games on the bounce to gain a proper leap. Obviously, we’ve still to play our game, but it’s no good in the example of United dropping 2 points, if we don’t do our own job in beating Sunderland Wednesday Night.
December 28, 2015 at 8:55 pm #761555Every time we come against a team doing badly we donate 3 points to them so we can’t take anything for granted. I’ve said it many times & I still believe that a cup is the best chance we have of achieving any goals this season. We are a long way from the title & are to inconsistent for top 4.
December 28, 2015 at 9:19 pm #761573Nil, I know what you’re saying but if (and knowing us it’s a big if) we win on Wednesday we’ll be level on points with Utd (haven’t checked the relevant goal differences) so could easily be sixth or seventh and within touching distance of the teams nearer the top, then again we could still be tenth, we’ve had this conversation before but this season is a minefield for forecasting results. December 28, 2015 at 9:36 pm #761594SIE, hi mate, I completely agree on the point of the season being a minefield with a lot of teams swapping places.
It’s just that we seem to be ‘collateral damage’ and playing catch up.
You’re right though. Perhaps I might be overreacting to this a bit and a win on Wednesday could give us a bit of a stepping stone. But we need to really be putting at least a run of 3 wins on the bounce. Unfortunately, it’s been one win, then a mixture of draws/defeats – gotta make it count at Sunderland.
Cheers
December 28, 2015 at 9:57 pm #761618Totally agree sanj, this is the worst Prem League ever and is wide open. We, however have no chance of even finishing top four never mind winning it. We won’t finish above City, Arsenal, Spurs, Utd and probably Leicester. Klopp needs at least two windows and I can’t see us doing much next month. Our squad is below average I’m afraid.
December 29, 2015 at 12:06 pm #762290If we beat Sunderland, we will be 5 points from 4th. While no match is easy, we have a more favorable home fixtures against the top teams in the second half of the season. A lot will depend on whether we will strengthen during the transfer window, and whether the team especially Sturridge can stay fit. During Rodgers’s term, we usually play much better after January and I think Klopp will match that.
December 29, 2015 at 12:17 pm #762308It will be much harder next year mate. 4th is still there for the taking. We lose tomorrow and we can really forget about. There is still hope but we need to hit a rich vein of form now. We have showed we can really play well under klopp and we need to find that level again and go in a consistent run. We need to be in good form by the time we get to the stoke semi final.
December 29, 2015 at 1:05 pm #762395Our biggest chance of finishing top 4 these past few seasons has been when 1 or more of the normal top 4 stumble leaving a slot open. We’ve only managed to take advantage once.
This season we have Chelsea who have massively slipped up and Utd who are also on a downwards trajectory yet we are nowhere to be seen. It’s down to one thing….inconsistency.
We have players who have inconsistent games, disappearing during matches against weak opposition. The team has inconsistent performances, one week destroying City then another week putting in a pitiful performance against the likes of Watford.
This is what’s killing us and until we can be more consistent we can forget about top 4. I don’t think there are any outstanding teams, maybe Leicester but because of their starting point, the teams that are the most consistent are sitting top 4 currently.December 29, 2015 at 9:41 pm #762947Gabara: Our problem isn’t the top teams that come at us, it’s the teams that sit behind the ball & make it hard to score. Therefor I think even some top teams will sit back at Anfield & frustrate us into errors & target set pieces to score. I really believe top 4 is to much this season for what is a pretty average squad. We will get there under Klopp though.
December 29, 2015 at 10:15 pm #762986Fully agree Ginger.
I made the point about being dunked down in the league by other teams in spite of winning and collecting 3 points, it’s because we’re more on the back foot and we disappear off the radar (top 5 or 6 places) because other teams too are earning their stripes and are being rewarded – rightly so.
We are where we are and we deserve what we get, so it ultimately falls back to the drawing board in aiming to win games back-to-back.
Cheers
December 30, 2015 at 12:46 am #763091Strangly we still have a small outside chance as this is weakest league I can remember (I still believe City will get it together in second half of season and eventually pull away). At the moment the mindset has to be about getting on a run to get into contention for top 4 though.
December 30, 2015 at 5:25 am #763139Arsenal, City and Spurs will most likely take up 3 spots. Leicester rely mainly on Vardy and Mahrez and they don’t have big enough squad to cope with injuries. Other teams are going to learn from the experience so I think they won’t do as well as the first half. United are still not playing well, and they are on a worst run than us. They also have the same Europa to compete, so they may drop points like last season. There are still a lot to play for.
December 31, 2015 at 8:06 pm #766151ST, thanks to Benteke we are a little closer to the top 4. Inconsistency has plagued us, but if we can keep those clean sheets & add a more clinical aspect to our finishing then top 4 is achievable. We have Studge to come back & a window for some reinforcements in defence. Suffice to say next month beginning with the West Ham game will define what we are playing for this season. Come on the Redmen YNWA
