Thanks guys for qualification clarification. Shouldnt cry over spilt milk, but if we didn’t lose/draw all those ‘winnable’ games we would be comfortably second place instead of talking about this. Oh well, we’re gonna do it the liverpool way, the hard way 🙂

Definitely agree hightown. We need to keep fighting as if 2nd place is the title. Keep pushing for auto qualification in champion league and hopefully attract better players in the summer. We really don’t want to be in a battle to make the top 4, with a risk of europa league (or if things go really badly, a risk of no euro footy next season again)

This is what I’ve been trying to beat the drums with. If we aim to finish as high as possible, i.e. 2nd it’s a much better aspiration and attainment. Sure, it’s obviously not the league title, but it’s a great achievement than just managing to scrape 4th.

Most importantly, it will measure how much of a gap there is points-wise between that position and 1st and obviously add to the indication of the players needed to put it right.

Damn right Hightown, 2nd place. It wouldn’t be as deflating as Rodgers nearly season because we all know the league is blown and we would be climbing into 2nd place. Getting a runners up in Klopp’s first full season in charge would be absolutely huge and players across Europe would probably want to come join our project. The CL TV money is another thing and if we want to be able to afford the best players, we have to care about the revenue side of things and 2nd place gives us a much larger share of the CL TV money.

I’m in agreement here Mr Mak.

Rodgers signed an array of players, but never made up for the loss of Suarez. Coutinho has already signed a new contract and there’s no danger of Mane leaving us, so finishing as high as possible would really give us a lift. And hopefully, we can bring in the right type of players and go that one step further.

Nil, I’m a man who is always willing to give someone another chance. Im a sucker for signs of progression.

That speaks volumes for my support of this club. . and we’re all here to do just that. Nobody is perfect and arguments will happen on here. I think you just need a few weeks away from them to change peoples perspective from “he always does this”, to “he occasionally does this”. . .

TBH I’m totally cool with occasionally.

To clarify, I was saying you need a few weeks away from arguments, not this forum.

I didn’t know where to put this and I didnt want to start a new thread over it but I stumbled upon something that will strike a note with people when they think back to all our matches and this idea we seem to collectively have had about our team.

You know that feeling that we so often looked like we were going to concede when teams got a chance? Well, as bad as our defence has been this season, no other team in the league has had fewer shots against them. . . including Chelsea

    http://www.footcharts.co.uk/index.cfm?task=basics_shots

Kinda weird to see that we’ve had the exact same number of shots for as Utd then, one away from being top there too!

You’d think that if there were a team that had the fewest chances against and was 1 away from the most chances for, that they’d be winning the league right? 😀

Of course we should go all out for second and to be fair we haven’t got anything else to go for where others will have more fixture congestion so we are in an ideal place.

The coming months will show just how consistent we are.

I agree Bob, the best we can get will be 2nd but it will need an all out winning streak to do it. Cheers

All out winning streak? We’re 3 points off 2nd with 39 up for grabs. Look, getting 2nd won’t be easy but the teams challenging for 2nd will all drop plenty of points in the next 13 matches.

If we beat Leicester with a good performance, for me that is our horrible dip put to bed and we can start to look at things a bit more positively. It’s really important that our well rested team get a confidence boost. The 2 things can really galvanise us and as Bob says, we have one goal to aim for when others have other distractions.

I don’t want to get ahead of myself because I want to see what animal emerges from the long rest/training period but I’m definitely in a better place regards optimism levels.

Spurs are currently 4 nil up on Stoke, a game where you would expect them to struggle. We need an all out winning streak for 2nd. but can afford to drop points for 4th. imho

So you think Spurs will win 11/12 of the remaining 13 games, basically.

That’s just not going to happen.

Hightown, I agree. We need to keep fighting for 2nd. place & hope the teams currently above will drop points. Cheers 🙂

I think as ever the upcoming games against Arsenal and Man City will be vital in the fight for 2nd place. A statement of the bleeding obvious I know, but it seems to me our rivals only drop points against each other. They appear solid against the lower teams, as Spurs showed this afternoon

Spurs have given themselves a great chance of catching Chelsea or at least consolidating 2nd. We beat them, yet they have gone on that winning streak to put themselves into contention in the run in while we dropped silly points. It could have been us. If we have title aspirations next season we have to learn from this. It’s not about just winning the head to heads but being hard to beat when facing the rest. We proved today we can do it if we have to. Now we must be consistent. Ynwa

As well as more attacking quality next year, we certainly need more grit. In the first half of the season when we were flying, every player looked in the mood and bought into the fight, pressing the opposition into errors. I think it was the home game to Leicester this season when Klopp was caught cheering on the touchline not over a goal, but simply because we had pressed the opposition into a mistake. But where was this same fight and grit in the reverse fixture a few months later? It’s something I really loathe about modern football. When in the mood players step up, but when you’re up against it, they disappear. OK, we’ve looked better in recent weeks, but don’t underestimate the difference an in form Coutinho has made – he raises the level and confidence of the other players and gets them in the mood again.

That’s why i think it’s important we get a player in who has decent experience of going the distance. Milner won the title but we need more. Hart between the sticks imho could be a leader were missing in the back 4. If Klopp has someone better lined up than both Sakho & Hart then fair enough.

    Too early? ☺

With CL distractions, assuming we qualify for group stages, I think we will be going for top 4 again rather than the title. Spurs finished second by winning all of their remaining games, apart from West Ham. Think they will be Chelsea’s strongest contenders once more. Pep may need another season with City & Arsenal may just lose their way now Arsene Wenger position has become uncertain. Utd under Mourinho could surprise everyone, or not. They need some big signings imho. Then there is Rafa with Newcastle who I envisage will succeed to midtable taking a few big scalps along the way & an exciting cup run. I’m looking forward to next season already. Should be a corker. Come on the Redmen Ynwa ☺
