Man Utd interest in Benfica winger confirmed by player’s agent

Just read this article and a few points occur to me.

1] Its probably true United “show interest” – they should show interest in hundred of players – but articles like this [especially for senior players] get morphed into “chasing” or “will sign” when it can be no more than window shopping.

2] It irks me that it seems every manager [especially foreign] seems to go for players from his home country or players he knows. That’s not to say they are not good players but I’d expect managers to cast their net wider and not have bias if they in fact do.

3] That a 16 year old already has an agent implies there are substantial fees involved for players this young. That being the case, United as a rich club should get the cream of the crop from around the world. And related …..

4] If we are getting top talent as young as 16 howcome there has never been a single foreign player to make it from academy to first team stardom.

    Comments anybody?

Did he make it from youth? You could argue it but there’s 90 million reasons to say he didn’t.

Money. If we sign a player from abroad (or even from another club within the UK) at a young age they will usually sign a large contract and then their attitude changes as they think they have made it.

Also, if they move to Utd for money and have a pushy agent then there is nothing to stop them moving for more money later on.

TFM is hopefully going to change that.

@Mac He was on the verge of making it and went straight into the Juve team when he signed so you could argue he was good enough even then, if only SAF and Pogba’s agent weren’t at loggerheads……

I don’t know if you could say ‘star’ but John O’Shea, 256 first team appearances after signing from Waterford as a 17 year old. Not sure if he ever made an academy appearance though so very much open to correction there

Is he foreign? Technically I suppose so (did Irish need work permit before EU) but then there have been many Irish to make it to JOS level and probably above.

He was signed from abroad so technically he is ‘foreign’, I don’t think he would have needed a work permit even before the EU, might have been included in the negotiations back in 1922

We spent 180 mins in four days essentailly chasing the ball around as the Danes eclipsed us with the superior ability and ball retention. We just got worn out I think. We don’t have the talent to be honest and heart and character can only take you so far unfortunately. The Danes were just better, end of story.
Imagine if England had the character of us or Wales? Should one of the O’Neil’s get the England job, or Chris Coleman?
No-one saw the 5-1 scoreline but I think secretly no-one is surprised we lost, only the margin of it. If we had won it would have been considered one of the great robberies in international football I think, most Irish believe we did well to get to the playoffs. Given we were top of the group this time last year and lost to Serbia at home and drew with Moldova I think it was, it should be considered a chance missed as with our victory over Wales in Cardiff, if those two results had been different we’d have topped the group. But, as they say, if wishes were fishes……

I don’t know why we didn’t just shut up shop at 1-0, we’re normally a very good team at doing that. I think we felt we needed 2 goals and just kept going forward and leaving huge gaps, it was ridiculous tactics when the 1-0 would have done us. We did such a good job on Eriksson on Saturday, to completely forget about him last night was just weird. Don’t know what Martin O Neill was doing at all. We got the first goal, perfect scenario, now stick everyone behind the ball and kill the game. I’ve never seen us lose that big I don’t think.

    Happy,

Martin, must have thought he was a 2nd tier player that they didn’t need worrying about.

It’s a bit disappointing that many of the youngsters signed from abroad do not make it into the first team. Is it the scouting or the coaching that is letting us down?

Maybe a better idea would be to sign the players and leave them to develop where they currently are.

@scholsey, started a thread a good while back, maybe two years ago, on whether academies had a future. Was told they definitely do.

I think academies have a future, but there is a reason why local lads perform better than the ones that get signed towards the end of their youth development.

I’d wager local lads that have been there the longest have the most to prove to earn that large contract. Where as the star of an U16 tournament who has 20 top clubs chasing for his signature will use that interest to get the biggest contract he can – once he has that you will often find attitudes change and the hunger goes.

Macheda being a perfect example of a player who thought they’d made it Way before they actually had done anything of the sort. He got a nice contract and it went to his head. Lord only knows where he is playing now.
